Stephen reviews: Perfect Blue (1997)

Email Address:. The first of those movies was the psychological horror anime movie Perfect Blue , released in I found that my previous dislike for the film had been based on my not understanding it, and that with a few more years and a better understanding, I found it to be a really good movie.

That is, until I found out a few months ago that Seven Seas Entertainment had licensed and translated the novel for the English-language market.

Naturally, I got excited and tried to get my hands on it. And after about four months, I finally did get a copy and sit down to read it. When their paths intersect, their lives will be changed forever. So right away, I should point out that the movie took a lot of liberties with the original story. Whereas the movie was a deeply psychological story about a young woman struggling with her identity, how people saw her, and how she saw herself after a career change, the novel itself is a very basic stalker story, like what you might find in an episode of Criminal Minds.

Not only that, but in the movie Mr. Me-Mania is, while intimidating, mostly a passive character, not taking any sort of action beyond stalking until late in the film. Speaking of which, there are some really disturbing scenes in the novel, especially as you go later in, that utilize body horror. This is followed by a very scary climax, which utilizes tension, body horror, and good old-fashioned chase to effectively keep the reader drawn in and wanting to find out what happens next.

While not the same as the film, the novel is still good on its own merits. As I said, the story is a very basic stalker tale. On that alone, he certainly succeeded. Still, t is a decent, if very simple, story of psychotic cat and mouse.

A gripping story of obsession with plenty of tension and well-written body horror. Take a look and let the story get under your skin whether you want it to or not. Always nice when an author is okay with the changes made from book to film. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Twitter account.

Perfect Blue (1997)

Mima, a year-old former pop icon pursuing an acting career, can no longer discern between reality and fantasy, as she is haunted by ghosts of her past as a teen idol and subsequently delves into paranoid delusions and nightmares. The underlying commentary of the film touches the theme of unstable selfhood correlated with celebrity and the vicious effects of stardom, in a dark critique of Japanese pop culture and the cult of celebrity. Review contains moderate plot points which may be considered spoilers, but are included for the sake of analysis. No plot twists or revelations are exposed, however. As previously noted in my review of Macross II , I was never really a fan of anime outside of the mainstream Studio Ghibli fare, but, thanks to the suggestion of my friend, Matt, I ended up going outside my comfort zone and wound up mostly enjoying what I saw with that quasi-film assembled from a TV miniseries. Yes, far better than K-PAX.

My love for Satoshi Kon and his movies knows no bounds. His works just confirm the status of anime as an art form that even rivals live-action cinema. Satoshi Kon was probably one of the biggest and greatest anime directors of the new generation, with these modern animation classics refer to above image to his name. This set of movie reviews had to be done. After all his works reached out far beyond the community if anime fans to a broader film community and has been internationally recognized. I was certainly surprised by this one; turned out to be a definite keeper in my favorite movies list.

RIP Satoshi Kon. I realize I'm a bit late tomorrow it will be exactly two years since the man died from pancreatic cancer , but since then I haven't really found a chance to pay proper tribute to one of the most notable anime directors in recent history.

Perfect Blue (2012)

You either had to buy wall-length VHS runs, borrow from your friends or movie store, or, god help you, tape them off the TV whenever the SyFy channel or Cartoon Networks Toonami was on, much like the early days of cassette trading. If you were real lucky, your local theater might have a one night showing of a movie, mostly ranging from Studio Ghibli hits to Ghost in the Shell or Akira. It was during this tumultuous era in animated entertainment that the notorious cult hit Perfect Blue began to make the rounds. Released in by the late Satoshi Kon, Perfect Blue was what Texas Chainsaw Massacre was to horror fans; deemed to be one of the most intense and violent works at the time and some argue, still now , it basically came out of nowhere. The story focused on popstar-turned-actress Mima Kirigoe who decides to re-invent herself into a more mature idol, which includes performing some pretty sketchy scenes in her first acting work. Throw in some dead bodies, a smidge-too-long rape scene, and a whole lot of crazy, and you got yourself Perfect Blue.

After watching the popular film Black Swan, my cousin informed me of its alleged inspiration, an anime called Perfect Blue. Although the director of Black Swan denies any influence, there are clear similarities between the two. I noticed these similar aspects in the films, but I am disappointed by the lack of attention the anime received in comparison to its counterpart. Starring Natalie Portman, the film shows how the young dancer slowly loses her mind after receiving the role of Swan Queen in the popular ballet Swan Lake.
