Super Mario Brothers Super Show - Vol. 2 (DVD, 2006, 4-Disc Set)

Has it been 35 years since Super Mario Bros. It's hard to believe that the game series about two Italian plumbers jumping to save a prince from a dragon-turtle monster has leaped into our hearts and saved the video game industry. Since then, Mario has forever become a permanent fixture in pop-culture. Everyone knows who Mario is, and most people have at least played one Mario game in their lives.

As with other popular Video Game Characters of the '80s and '90s, Mario made the jump from videogames and into the world of movies and television, with a CGI Movie coming in So, in honor of Mario's 35th birthday , we decided to look back at his appearances in TV and movies, but only official releases will be counted.

Cameos and parodies won't count on this list. With all that out of the way, Let's ah Go!! The live-action Super Mario Bros. It bare's little to its source material, the script and storytelling is just a mess, and it's still often considered one of the worst adaptations of all time.

How bad was this movie? The dystopian art design, while nothing like the Mushroom Kingdom, is still fascinating, thanks in no small part to production designer David L.

Snyder Art Director for Blade Runner. The actors, while hating their work, at least were trying their best, with the standout being Dennis Hopper as King Koopa. Finally, while the Goomba's and Yoshi may not look like their game counterparts, but the animatronics and creature work is still top tier.

Super Mario World acted as the final animated adaptation from the game series. Only lasting 13 episodes, it seemed that Mario's popularity had peaked far before the show went into production. Sure, Mario remained a pop culture figure, with World selling over 20 million copies, but the damage done by the live-action movie seemed to be a major factor for the lack of Mario television and movie appearances post Then again, The Super Mario Brothers cartoons weren't exactly high-quality entertainment, when compared to the likes of other shows on the market, like Tiny Toon Adventures and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The most interesting thing to talk about when discussing the Super Mario World cartoon is the final episode, Mama Luigi. Since the mids, the episode has become a meme and was even re-created via professional fan animations. There's nothing good about the rest of the show, but it's not awful. It's a short-lived show that's worth a look, but only through nostalgic lenses.

Much like other Mario animations, Super Mario Brothers 3 was another attempt to ring a few coins from Nintendo's mascot. It once again featured the Bros working together and trying to stop whatever King Koopa had to offer while rescuing Princess Toadstool. Depending on how much one liked the original will be based on how much they'll enjoy this incarnation of Mario.

What is an immediate downgrade is the voice acting. Gone are Captain Lou Albano and Danny Wells as the titular brothers and are replaced with two other voice actors. They're not bad, but they don't have the charm and chemistry of Albano and Wells.

The rest of the show isn't horrible much like its predecessor, but its nowhere as good as other superior outings. Before Mario went live-action and starred in American cartoons, he went anime. Only a year after Super Mario Brothers was released, this minute short film , created by Grouper Production, acts as the very first movie based on a video game, predating the Super Mario Brothers Movie.

It's a weird movie, with Mario and Luigi encountering a wizard, summoning a ship from the sea, and Luigi in Blue Overalls. It never got an official U. If you're a Mario fan, it's worth checking out on YouTube. Super Show was a bizarre endeavor from D. A lot of it came from the stories and worlds they explored. Rather than just the Mushroom Kingdom, they went into space world, spy world, and even a car world. It's not original, but seeing Mario in them is pretty Bizzare.

The humor is pretty bad, but Albano and Wells are just a joy to watch that the two make it work. It's so unfunny; it's funny if that makes any sense. That alone makes this not only the best Super Mario Brothers show, but also vastly superior to that live-action film.
