Legendary Horror Manga Writer Junji Ito’s Most Chilling Works Will Become An Anime Anthology

In this day and age, when you say the words horror manga, only one name springs to mind. And that is the very talented and twisted Junji Ito. Many of his stories manage to do this because his style of horror falls within the body horror genre and although they feature some supernatural elements, the outcomes and settings for his stories seem realistic and border on what could really happen in real life.

The Junji Ito Collection as the name suggests is a collection of his works but presented in anime format. Each episode contains 2 stories with varying runtimes. I liked the selection of stories included in the collection bar a couple. Most of the stories included drive home the theme of body horror that Ito has become so iconic for but some of the stories, primarily those that include his recurring character Souichi feel a bit out of place in this collection due to them having quite comedic undertones underneath what would be a disturbing story.

Starting the collection off with a Souichi episode was a terrible way to introduce people to the series and prepare them for what laid ahead in future episodes. Thankfully, story-wise the series picks up from there, really kicking into gear come episode 2.

Just take a look at the screenshot below for an example of what I mean. With many of them consisting of dialogue right out off the pages of the manga and even replicating the shots and composition of the original drawings. The home release Blu-Ray set includes all 12 episodes of the Junji Ito Collection across 2 discs that can be watched either dubbed in English or in Japanese with subtitles.

It also includes a digital redemption code to watch the series using the FunimationNow app. The extras included in the set may be a big driving force in many wanting to pick it up. Netflix Announces New Junji Ito Anime Series

Sit down and gather round. There are less horror short story anime series than there should be, so another one is always welcome. If you want to continue the horror thrill ride, then consider these anime recommendations. As the sun sets, a mysterious man comes to town. The children all gather round to hear his sinister tales based on Japanese urban legends.

I have loved scary stories since I was a child. However, the series of short stories, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, has always been much more frightening than slasher films like the Halloween and Friday the 13 th. Sure, I find a degree of enjoyment in gory films, and I certainly understand how those movies are loved by massive amounts of people, but psychologically disturbing stories have always had a much greater impact on me. As always, beware of spooky spoilers going forward, my horrible anime-niacs. Every minute episode of Junji Ito Collection features two short stories, though each individual tale varies in actual length. Except for one character who appears in a few tales, none are related, so this anime is easily accessible. There is quite a terrifying variety. Although the rest of the models in the magazine appear normal, this unsettling model is extremely tall, has a long, thin head with a pointy chin, sunken eyes, no eyebrows, and a large forehead. Iwasaki is part of a crew of amateur filmmakers, and they release a casting call for a female lead in a film they plan to produce.

The term master of horror is often attributed to American author Stephen King without any argument. Junji Ito is a mangaka who understands phobias, existential anxieties, and the terror of the unknown better than any other horror writer on Earth. His horror stories, both short and long, are all written and drawn with a surreal, off-kilter, otherworldly eeriness. Over and again, Tomie drives the men who fall for her into madness. Despite its success, Tomie did not project him into the world of famous writers and artists immediately, as Ito worked for several years as a dental technician.

Don't expect the nail biting villain to make an appearance in the upcoming anime adaptation of Junji Ito's Uzumaki, which is set to release on Adult Swim next year, but we definitely wouldn't be surprised if the delinquent that dabbles in the supernatural would return in a future manga series.
