The site launched on Tuesday, nearly 25 years after the nowyear-old Larson retired on Jan. Though new work will appear in to coincide with the 40th anniversary of The Far Side , Larson told the New York Times that it will be on his terms. In an open letter posted to the site, Larson got candid about his past reservations regarding having his content online, citing fears over control, copyright, screen quality and hackers. Although not everyone is quite so uncomplicated in their motives; my cartoons have been taken and used to help sell everything from doughnuts to rodent control. At least I offer range. Or they flat-out tanked.

It very often covered scientific issues. Larson even has a species of worm named after him. I know Mr. Larson does not like his cartoons published on the internet but does anyone know of this cartoon, where to find them and such. One of my favorites is a picture of someone with a peg leg walking across the desert.

You can see his foot prints in the sand, one round from the peg the other foot shaped. Next to one round print is a rattle snake seeing stars who has tried to bite the peg. I like this not only because I'm an amputee but because it's actually happened to me.

I stepped on a rattle snake who bit my fake leg! It was quite scary. He stuck to my leg and coiled around. I was afraid he'd free himself and then bit my other, real leg but his fangs came off and he slithered away into the grass. I wrote Mr. Larson and told this story and he sent me an autographed copy of the cartoon which I lost during a move, damn movers!

Life imitates art but it's really scary when it imitates Gary Larson's art! If brains were made of dynamite, I wouldn't have enough to blow my nose. Fixed my post from "in" to "outside" so now these posts will look a little odd. This whole place is "odd" You are not out of line. The mind is like a parachute. It works best when open. So if everything is odd, isn't that normal?

Gary Larson has many books which are compendiums of his cartoons. I think I have all of them. I will go through them when time allows to see if I can find that one. I really like his humour. Great stuff. Geezer Naked Science Forum King!

One of the collections of Gary Larson's work, I'm happy to have. I will eventually get all five of them, because he is such a twisted genius. If you are a Gary Larson fan, you know exactly what I'm saying. If you're not one of his fans, then I'm wasting my time. Far Side comics are the best that I've seen. Very witty. What compelling were you referring to? That's a an open question for tons of answers.

For me, Larson is up there with people like Terry Pratchett as being brilliant observers of the human condition and also brilliant in their ability to express their observations. The God at His computer one is an old favorite that is more on the really funny side than the incredibly insightful side which are both on The Far Side. The one that inspired this post is this one to the right. It sums up, in a single-panel cartoon, one of the key things that distinguishes humans. On some level, this is what science is all about. They showed the audience of middle-aged emptied-headed suburbanites, each with the same wide empty smile on his or her face. Then they showed Garth in the middle of it all looking absolutely terrified.
