What the ending truly means: S Anime Series Discussion. Title Discussion. Recent Watched Ignored Search Forum. What the ending truly means: Some crucial facts you have overlooked.

Notice: This post contains spoilers. Be sure to finish reading the manga first. It might be too late now, but let me just say one thing. The author Akimi Yoshida has talked about the ending many times, and her comments are hardly compatible with the question. Neither of us is gonna make it. These lines are seemingly contradictory. They say he had a choice to live or die and chose to die.

Think about it. Even though it just creates contradictions? Here are two vital clues. Still, Lao died. Nevertheless, that shooting killed Lao. It may be unrealistic, but they realized that they were fatally wounded. He went to the library instead of the hospital: He wanted to finish reading the letter in a quiet, calming place before he died. Its clue can be found in another scene of the manga. When Foxx shot Dino, he missed the vital points on purpose.

Did he want to keep Dino alive? No, his aim was to make Dino know his own ambition. Sorry for the unpleasant example, but the same goes for Ash. Lao missed his vital points. She gave Ash a brief reprieve to finish reading the letter and die in the best place. But what if Ash died instantly in the street? It can be hours, minutes, or even seconds!

Above all, he was suffering from a fatal wound. When things are painful, time feels long. This is not accurate and is misleading. In GoL, Sing had been racked with guilt. He had determined not to tell Eiji about the letter that put Ash off guard.

The fact that Ash was killed to save his life tormented him. If Ash died of his own will, would Sing have blamed himself that much? That follows that it was Ash himself, not Lao, who killed Ash. Conversely, assuming Ash had been fatally wounded, the story would be simple. In GoL, Sing is explicit about this fact. My brother Lao was the one who killed Ash. So many people think that Ash sacrificed for Eiji.

They say Ash suffered from mental problems, and they led him to suicide. If that were true, how could Eiji say that Ash lived all-out? No significance, no heroism. Man is mortal. Our death is seldom of grave significance. So it goes.

Ash was no exception. The key to her intention of this ending lies in an old manga. Fortunately, Eiji knew the truth. You and I know that better than anyone else. This is the story of Ash Lynx. It tells how he lived, not how he died. So he went to the library. He wanted to read the letter rather than undergo futile medical treatment.

Like it or not. The anime director intentionally cut out the last dialogue between Ash and Lao. She left open a possibility of Ash being alive. But this fact proves how crucial the dialogue was. Now, take a look at the BF page of Wikipedia Japan.

This page is continuously edited by Japanese enthusiasts. He loses consciousness after he finished reading the letter. People have different interpretations. But was that what Yoshida intended as the author?

Ash had fought through without succumbing to anything. It may be one of the reasons why so many fans hate this ending. I assure you that Yoshida, who brilliantly created the characters, would have never ruin Ash like that. His death may be a tragedy indeed if you look at the event alone. But I hope someday people will realize that his soul has been saved. It was Ash. He read the letter and realized it. Just imagine the feeling of satisfaction when you truly resonate with your precious one.

And his soul is always with you Thank you for putting up with reading this long, less fluent English. I hope I could help your understanding. Any questions are appreciated. Criticism is welcome. I would like to believe that this misunderstanding happened because of anime director cut out some important dialogue and scenes from the manga and someone's mis-translations of the author's interviews and it spread plausibly to fans. And this is just my personal opinion, but this misunderstanding may have happened because of the difference of views of life and death between Japanese and non-Japanese people.

Thanks for the analysis. I was going to think Ash is alive against my will. Thank you guys, I really appreciate your comments! To wandnaw: wandnaw said: I would like to believe that this misunderstanding happened because of anime director cut out some important dialogue and scenes from the manga.

I see. I didn't know what she said in interviews, because I'm not interested in the anime director. Anyways, thank you for the info and your work to accurately explain what the author mentioned, and furthermore about the translation of dialogue. Btw, I do understand that fans overseas are so depressed and are in deep deep grief as am I , however I don't think death is necessarily always an unhappy thing.

I have no ability to explain subtle nuances by words English is not my mother tongue , but roughly to say Ash Lynx passed away in happiness. Thank you for the linguistic clarifications! The language can indeed be a barrier at times, it's not always easy to perfectly translate Japanese sentences in English, part of the meaning can get lost. This beautiful story can affect people in different ways, there's no need to view Ash's death in the exact same way the author did.

Whether his death was inevitable or not or whether Ash gave up in the end or not it's up for interpretation in my opinion, but one thing is certain, the story could not have ended in any other way.

Banana Fish, Vol. 19

Just for now, Eiji Just like a white winged dove , Eiji came into his life. Sounded like he was asking for permission. Ash placed his soul in his hands. Eiji turned it around delicately, weighing and caressing, before he returned it with a thank you. And the days went by.

Finally Some Good Endings For Once

Love your hcs! Back alleys and late-night shadows were his playground, hiding his past in a blanket of secrecy. The mystery of his life was one of the greatest strengths he possessed. To others, Ash Lynx was an enigma through and through, resulting in a beautiful and dangerous legend whispered about in alleyways and bars throughout the city. Even his closest allies and friends knew hardly a fraction of his mind, let alone past.

Did you agree with Ash Lynx's death, and why or why not? Seven years later and we've all lived like we might not die tomorrow.

But if you were raised somewhere in the temperate swathe that crosses much of North America, Japan, Korea, Russia, several former Soviet republics, parts of China, Turkey, and Eastern and Western Europe—including the British Isles—something within you remembers it. See more stuff I like theme made by espoirthemes reblog? Also, Shorter is alive cause I said do i would die for him to live tbh. I am so sorry for any mistakes. Babysitting is a very challenging task, especially when the kid is a carbon copy of the most intelligent, cheeky and bratty man Eiji had ever met. Isaac Callenreese was giving the man a headache and pills were not fixing it. At least Shorter was there to help him right?

Happy endings aren't always assured in the world of anime, and plenty of stories end with the main character —whose journey we've seen throughout the series— perishing in the end. Of course, just like in Western comics, it's not unheard of for anime characters to die and miraculously come back.

While on tour in Iraq, an American soldier named Griffin suddenly goes mad, shooting several of his comrades before another soldier named Max reins him in. Banana Fish. What a weird name, they said. This is really just my way of coming to terms with the ending of the story, so warning for major spoilers ahead. Ash treats pretty much everyone except Eiji with a similar snarky attitude.
