Hotarubi no mori e *spoiler alert*
Six-year old Hotaru Takegawa gets lost in the forest one summer, only to meet a masked-wearing, teenage-bodied Gin, who claim to be a forest spirit. Gin reveals that humans cannot touch him, nor can he do it himself. Otherwise, he will disappear. Gin then helped her find her way out of the forest. She came back the day after, bringing some snacks for the two of them. Their second meeting was followed by another, and then the next.
Amidst their differences, they manage to establish their friendship. From then on, summer was never the same for Hotaru. Summer meant going back to the province, which means, seeing Gin again. But more importantly, you can easily sympathize with the characters and relate to the story eventually. Nor is this good for those who are looking for genres other than supernatural and romance. The character of Hotaru for instance is a portrayal of development. It tells us something about growth — that while we grow older, there are things in the past, intangible things most especially, which cannot be forgotten.
So you can just imagine how he might have felt about it. Plus, he will have to wait for summer season before he can once again hang out with his valued human friend. It was like my life needed this. I may have watched this movie like 6 or 7 times already, but I still cannot get enough of it. This short film took a percentage of my heart, tears and smiles, and I swear that it will take yours, too. Hotarubi no Mori e shows us the story of forbidden love between a normal girl, Takegawa Hotaru and Gin, a spirit that cannot let humans touch him. According to the rumours, the place is inhabited by yokais. Incapable of finding a way to return, she started to cry and like this she attracted the attention of a masked guy. He offered his help to Hotaru but with the only condition that she will not touch him under any circumstances.

After Gin escorts Hotaru out of the forest, the little girl expresses her desire of seeing him again. The day after, Hotaru shows up again and goes for another walk in the forest with Gin.

While crying out in desperation, Hotaru is approached by Gin—a mysterious boy wearing a mask—who offers to help her. Overjoyed at the sight of another person, Hotaru runs to Gin with open arms only to be rudely fended off. However, she quickly learns the grave reason behind his behavior: a dreadful curse has been cast upon Gin. Should he ever be touched by a human being, he will disappear forever. Though Gin urges her to never return, Hotaru does the exact opposite, and before too long, the two become close friends despite his delicate situation.
