Lu over the wall (movie)

Director Masaaki Yuasa had a busy year in However, "Lu Over The Wall" is a family film, and perhaps the most family-friendly thing this advant-garde animator ever attached his name to. Aside from the intended audience, it is impossible to not compare this to Studio Ghibli's film "Ponyo. Both decided to make the "mermaid" look and act like a five-year old guppy with a human face and a big frog-like smile. In that sense, there are some slight differences in "Lu Over The Wall": namely, it is better.

The story is a bit more modern, and time will tell if it limits the film's ability to hold up in decades to come. The main character is about to enter high school, and is a bit of a loner in the small fishing town read: "we only fish here" with his divorced dad and his grandfather.

The boy has a natural talent for music, not by playing instruments, but by composing electronic beats and releasing them online. Through this, a couple friends discover him and beg him to join their rock band.

When rumors of mermaids start getting more traction then usual, he agrees to join out of curiosity to explore the nearby islands, and soon discovers Lu, a young and playful mermaid who just happens to like music.

Which could be a problem, since the town knows that mermaids eat people spolier: they don't. While perfectly fine on paper, the film is really sold on Yuasa's trademark style of unique character designs and frantic animation. In a story that heavily features music darn good music too!

When the whole town gets into it in one of the best scenes, the animation recalls old school Tex Avery, Disney and Warner Bros, back when they too had elaborate dance sequences. It's fast and fluid, and is where Yuasa's style feels right at home. Other scenes are still taken with care: the character designs are unique and generally pleasant to look at, the old town is detailed, and the water and other fluids are carefully animated.

Which is not to say it is entirely perfect. The film was animated using popular software Flash, known for providing computer shortcuts to smooth 2D animation.

While normally garish to watch, "Lu Over The Wall" is an example of how it should be done. Character animation looks as if it was drawn normally, and most Flash effects are limited to the water, giving a smooth motion to waves in a way that perfectly fits the tool. Despite this, there are a handful of scenes where characters or scenes smoothly blend into each other Which is a shame, since overall the film is a better technical achievement than "Walk On Girl," and a proud example of Yuasa's artisitic vision.

And outside the madness of magic or punches of comedy is a more grounded story. The townspeople are scared of dwindling fish supply and are seeking other ways to survive in a town with no other job prospects. Characters constantly have bigger dreams than they were designed to have, knowing they would have no choice but to leave the quaint town to chase after them. And bigger politians and businessmen have desires to revitalize the town, even at the expense of these innocent mermaids.

These themes are more topical then ever, and unfortunately the film doesn't give much in the way of answers, but through the magical realism retains a lighthearted-ness that feels refreshing. How many other films can you name where the big business man turns out to be the good guy to the plucky child heroes?

While Yuasa as a director is better suited for adult comedy, he proves himself here as capable for making anything he wants for any audience.

Unfortunately, the dub was rushed interviews say it was done in a couple months to show at a children's film festival , and the translated script shows for it: the jokes and lines are translating literally, often forcing the actors to say lines quickly to match lip-syncs, and feels a bit more foreced than it ought to.

A shame, since otherwise the acting is ok Also a shame, since the English version went as far as to animate a English version of the detailed title intro too

Wylie Writes

It is the second Science Saru film, though it was the first to be produced. The music beat allows her fish fin to transform into a pair of human legs. The two strike up a friendship, and Kai takes Lu around the town for a tour. Kai learns that Lu cannot touch sunlight or she will burst into flames.

Lu Over the Wall is a riotously exuberant watch with an engaging blend of music and colourful, fluid animation - fun for all the family!

Review: ‘Lu Over the Wall’

Kai is a believably morose adolescent who comes out of his shell when he makes a new friend, and watching Siren deal with petty jealousies and secrets gives each character moments of joy and misery. It turns out this town was cursed many years ago, when the locals sacrificed one of the Merfolk in the sun. The animation style veers from sweet and traditional to wild and elastic. Whether these mood swings are welcome or frustrating will vary from audience member to audience member, and possibly from moment to moment. Instead, it was acclaimed as an anime masterpiece and ushered in a new era for the legendary animator that included films like "Spirited Away" and "Ponyo. According to Studio Ghibli's making-of documentary, Miyazaki's original concept for "Princess Mononoke" was created in and involved a samurai story with a warrior's daughter and a mountain cat that gains supernatural powers. By the mid 90s, however, Miyazaki felt the samurai narrative was too rigid and no longer relevant to contemporary Japan, causing him to overhaul the story. The Japanese title of the film is "Mononoke-Hime," with Hime meaning "princess.

An ultra-weird grown-up version of the beloved anime 'Ponyo,' Masaaki Yuasa's trippy toon recounts the odd friendship between a boy and a mermaid.

‘Lu Over the Wall’ Film Review: Wild Mermaid Anime Defies Categorization

Review by Michael Leader michaeljleader. Playing like a fusion of the whimsical adventure of Ponyo and the emotional textures of teen dramas such as Whisper of the Heart , Lu Over the Wall homes in on Kai, a reclusive high schooler trapped in a run-down fishing village by the sea. There they rouse a mermaid called Lu who has two overwhelming obsessions: music, and Kai himself. The character of Lu is a fascinating mash-up of familiar figures from Ghibli and beyond. Merfolk, like vampires, transmit their condition through biting, so when Lu scoops up a kennel full of pets and has a nibble she creates a clan of… mer-doggies.

Film Review: ‘Lu Over the Wall’

Wild at heart: Lu Over the Wall. It's been quite a year for director Masaaki Yuasa who's wild, busy debut feature Night is Short, Walk on Girl premiered just months ago. The last time a Japanese project was named best film at the premiere animation festival was 22 years ago, when Studio Ghibli and Isao Takahata's Pom Poko took home the gong in One can't help but feel this is one of those occasions when a statuette has been presented to the right filmmaker for the wrong film. In common with much contemporary anime, Lu Over the Wall pivots around a sad teenager displaced by divorce.

Lu Over the Wall is one of Yuasa "Yuusa" Masaaki's three anime titles that were produced under his new animation studio he himself founded after Ping Pong.

Ponyo It is a Studio Ghibli movie released in and lo on wal l is a Science Saru movie released in Both films are set in a Japanese coastal town with young male protagonists befriending young girls of sea creatures. Their friendship throws their small towns into chaos as the sea devours the land. Only when the hero comes to terms with his feelings and desires, does the sea and the land return to normal. There are a lot of little elements that make these movies alike too, like Ponyo and Lu have protective and supernatural fathers, and both girls have curious and confident personalities who bring them down to Earth and its people.

With anime series such as The Tatami Galaxy , Ping Pong , and Space Dandy , Yuasa has evinced a willingness to flit jubilantly and hyperactively between myriad styles of animation. In Lu Over the Wall , this tendency is, if somewhat reigned in, still on energetic display. Its characters sometimes abruptly take on the squishiness of the anthropomorphic animals in a Tex Avery short, or mutate into grotesque parodies that seem to be intruding from a Ralph Baskhi or Sylvain Chomet feature. In short, Lu is a gratifying and delightful sensory experience, even if its fairy-tale sensibility is thoroughly familiar and its story never quite justifies its long-ish running time. Kai lives with his earnest, admonishing father and his taciturn grandfather, who own a small fishing charter company and a parasol-making business, respectively.
