However, Sebastian is the next one to turn up dead , after a strange late-night visit to Bard and Finny and Mey-rin confirms he was alive at AM — which of course, clears Ciel of suspicion in his killing rather convenient, it must be said. The mystery here is a fun one, because it works on multiple levels — we have the Doyle-like conventional murder puzzle, and then the matter of why this entire evening is happening in the first place Why did Ciel and Sebastian start speaking French, and what was in the message Sebastian had Mey-rin send by ill-fated Owl Express? And who is the mysterious Reverend Jeremy who shows up at the manor, with a strangely familiar voice? But I think the best part of the story is the atmosphere.

He stabs himself in the chest to recreate what Charles Grey had done to him; he has to recreate that murder scene. The joke he does play is on Grey ; Sebastian chooses to recreate the death scene incorrectly! He might have, however, got the idea from knowing that real Ciel had once swallowed the Phantomhive ring. Sorry, the quality of the Sebastian pic is low, fuzzy. I simply cropped an older pic I used in a previous post. I was trying to figure out why Lau would make such a huge suggestion that they go all the way to China. Then I saw more spoilers. Ada starts acting kind of panicky….

The Kuroshitsuji anime itself had verged away from the original story of the manga in the very first season so when fans continued the manga and got to such amazing story arcs such as book of circus, the book of murder and last but not least the Titanic arc there was an air of disappointment when the realization hit they may never see these fantastic arcs animated. Ciel invites many high profile characters to this banquet including Lau and Ran Mao, one of the Queens butlers Charles Grey to accompany Ven Siemens, Patrick Phelps from the shipbuilding industry, Grimsby Keane a theater producer accompanied by his girlfriend famed opera singer Irene Diaz, the president of a diamond company Carl Woodley and lastly a struggling writer named Arthur of whom tells the story from his perspective and essentially narrates. The night kicks off as any other banquet would with moth watering food and enough wine to sink a ship, not even the blustering storm outside could dampen this evening. The only mood killer is the rude behavior from an overly intoxicated Ven Siemens who, once he passes out, is taken away to bed. This launches a mystery none of these guests were expecting, more chaos ensues and more murders, writer Arthur heads the case but is he ready for what he discovers?

He is tasked with solving crimes in the underworld of Victorian-era London. Ciel has formed a contract with demon Sebastian Michaelis, who disguises himself as his butler , to seek revenge on those who tortured him and murdered his parents. In exchange for his services, Sebastian will be allowed to consume Ciel's soul. A twenty-four episode anime television series adaption, produced by A-1 Pictures , aired from October to March A second twelve episode season aired from July to September ; this season features two new main characters and has an anime-original storyline which does not feature manga content.

This time around the genre is mystery, and in its two hour run time Book of Murder fuses together some classic tropes from the detective literature of the period with its own twisted humour and over the top antics. But it does this without existing in isolation, and whilst the story is self-contained there are a few smart links that help the progression of the overall narrative. Having said that, early on Book of Murder has an obvious problem; too many new faces and not enough focus on Ciel and Sebastian. Of course a selection of new characters was necessary to allow for the murder mystery plot to function properly, but most of the new arrivals serve little purpose other than to get murdered, or be suspected of said murders. A good portion of the uninteresting new characters are killed off very early on, and when the focus shifts towards solving these murders things become considerably more exciting.

One of the most popular hit anime series both within Japan and worldwide, Kuroshitsuji is a dark and compelling story about a pretentious nobleman and his cheeky butler as they solve crimes under the command of the Queen. When this season was announced, I was hesitant but excited, much like I had been at the announcement of the second season. My reasoning being that the 1st of the trilogy was wrapped up nicely and really had no need for additional story. While the second season did a decent, if anything messy, job at continuing, Book of Circus was a welcome change.
