I have nothing but respect for this man named Kozuki Oden. End of the flashback, back to present from next chap. Can't wait to see what's gonna happen next.
It's interesting that Oden knows about the 20 years time skip for the appearence of "the one who will defeat Kaido", or in other word "the one who Roger awaits". This was an amazing chapter. I can't wait to see this flashback in the anime and hope they won't censored too much.. Fucking masterpiece of a chapter, I'm sorry for doubting Oda and Oden. There had to be a bigger reason beyond "Lord Idiot" for Oden to be so patient and it was his firm believe in the prophecy.
And of course, his clan invented the porneglyphs, he was with Roger and there's also Toki who came from the past. Nobody should have more reason to go through such lengths but him. It relevates a lot. I'm yet again also stunned by the amount of foreshadowing, build up and how the present and different flashbacks are interlinked. Marineford had Whitebeard foreshadowing that there will be a giant war for the first time, Professor Clover mentioned the "giant threat" or the enemy of a certain kingdom before he was shot, on FMI we learned about Joy Boy waiting for someone and now Oden put the pieces together.
So far Cora and Otohime had the most emotional flashback deaths imo, but this shit right here is seriously huge. Oden was intoduced as an outcast, too wild for his country only looking for adventure, this man turned into a fine damiyo, lost his status and was ridiculed by the citizens he learned to care for. However, in his last hour people learned about his true nature and this added to his incredibly moving last moments.
Another part of this emotional equation was implemented with showing the pain of his retainers along with parts of their past with Oden. Leaving behind the man who effictively saved their lifes twice and getting entrusted with his dream, that's depressing and the despair we've experienced in chapter was elevated to new heights.
Absolutely devastating and pure sobfuel. Though, despite the tragedy it was presented in the typical One Piece manner, in particular Oden's final moments. I was probably making the same grotesque face as the characters when everyone shouted "The better he is" might not be the correct translation.
Sorry Leo, you did your best in the cold of the Atlantic, but there can only be one true Chad. By far the most impressive feat of sheer willpower so far. Regarding our two bad guys. Orochi is by far the most repulsive piece of garbage ever and potentially only Tenryubito can rival him in terms of vileness.
Revenge or not, doesn't excuse lack of balls. Fortunately Kaido showed some good qualities that proved he has at the very least some dignity. I hold back on him on purpose a few chapters ago because it was apparent that going for such a cheap shot wasn't his plan and that he didn't even notice what happened.
Also obviously got confirmed that Kaido didn't hit his peak yet. Not to mention that he was slashed in his dragon form. And besides, you could see how Oden's willpower impacted him and I loved the moment of mutual respect before Kaido pulled the trigger another chara that died by a gunshot Can't wait till we dive deeper into Kaidos character. Toki at the end, so beautiful and brave. I feel like crying again. Wonder if we're gonna see the complete version of her sending everyone to the future or if there will be a jump right back to the present.
Maybe there will be a transition in the middle of the chapter. The true finale for this arc is going to be insane. And lastly, I'm grateful that Oda gave us Oden. The journey with him was one of the most enjoyable in One Piece, it was just a bit too short and kinda rushed towards the end, yet nonetheless amazing overall.
I could feel my heart melting for this Wandering Witch is the best light novel ever! At least, not as hard as to live on. P legend. Oden backstory was amazing, it would be nice to know even more about him, as he is one of the best characters Oda ever created. I wonder if there will still be another chapter to close off the flashback's overarching, or if we will just go back immediately since it's repeated info.
I normally write a fair chunk for this kind of manga chapters in general, but I don't think I can fully disclose my feelings with this chapter in as many words. Something just feels so fucking genuine when Oden legitimately didn't even have one bit of second thoughts before demonstrating compassion and love towards the people who turn their backs to him because of the circumstances that brought him to fall from grace, since they couldn't know better and he did it all for their safety also without thinking twice.
The way he died with a smile with high hopes for the future of his country and followers was just really iconic and I can't possibly wait for the anime to cover this with some of its wonderfully emotional OST usage. I like how Kaido did think what Higurashi did was a coward's move that led to his unworthy victory against Oden, and he just straight kills her to compensate for it.
The way Oden talks about drinking and hoping for Kaidou's own growth one day before the latter mercy-kills him goes to show he truly respected him to the very end unlike Orochi , and that also may be the reason he became a drunkard.
I love these climactic chapters of long flashback arcs, they truly never lose their magic within the presentation and execution of the content leading to them whenever they pop up.
I also like that Oda slowed down quite a bit lately, I wonder if the rest of Wano will be less fast paced from now on that were chapters that unfortunately actually felt rushed because of it , with all the tons of initial exposition in this arc done with albeit we apparently are still about halfway through it more or less lol. If anime fans knew what they wanted in anime, Edens zero would be the biggest anime ever. RIP Oden. The moment when you can only see his smile while his dead body is getting sunk in the boiling oil really got me.
Kaido gained my respect there. He killed that bitch hag and executed Oden out of mercy showing his respect for the man. On the other hand, I can only hope the worst for Orochi at the end of this arc. Cannot remember a more annoying character putting aside the Celestial Dragons. He's nothing more other than just a sickening coward. Looking forward to see what it's going to happen in the present now. Magnificent chapter! I teared up. Young Fukurokuju looks creepy.
So Oden was the one who told Toki about the 20 year thing. It makes way more sense than Toki somehow knowing the future. Kaido killed Higurashi and apologized to Oden! I love that! I guess he is kind of honorable after all.
Why did Raizo close Denjiro's mouth? What was Denjiro gonna say? Man, what a way to end the Oden flashback arc. And like this, this arc is finally over and we're back to the present. It took Oda long enough lol. We all knew that he was going to die, but none of us expected a death THIS legendary. And he smiled at the very end. Are we sure he isn't a D? That would be quite amazing. Amazing chapter. Had me in tears! Oda sensei is a genius.
Oden memory will never die! It looks like the flashback is over, so on to the present time and see Luffy and crew. Miss them a lot! Died with a smile.
