The beloved and iconic cartoon cat and mouse duo has been in the public for nearly 80 years; spanning a wide variety of programs to keep their shenanigans acts very much alive from one generation to the next. Although, no blood or gore is ever depicted. Being enemies for their entire lives, Tom and Jerry experience another rivalry in their relationship as the feline cat is hoping to earn a living as a musician in Central Park, while inventive mouse is looking to find a proper home dwelling within the vastness urban landscape of New York City. While Jerry makes himself at home at the luxury hotel, Tom remains on the outside, dealing with pressure from rival cats, including Butch Nicky Jam , inspiring him to get off the street. DuBois Rob Delaney , conning her way into becoming a power player at the hotel, which upsets the second-in-command, Terrance Michael Pena.

'Tom and Jerry' (2021) Review
At least it was a box-office success. Add to Favourites. Random Review Lists and Junk. The Villains Club. Description Don't you believe it. Those words Tom from the original cartoon shorts would say about this movie. It's not that this film doesn't try, it just doesn't really work for me because Tom and Jerry are supposed to be timeless characters and here they are in New York City and they stay at this hotel with live action humans mixed with cartoon animals.
There are rapping pigeons in the opening and throughout the film, and cameos from the Tom and Jerry shorts such as Spike the dog, Butch the cat and Tom's girlfriend also make small appearances.
Pretty much a boring scenario with celebrities such as Chloe Grace Mortez, Michael Pena, Rob Delaney, SNL's Colin Jost, and Ken Jeong all signed up just to be in a Tom and Jerry movie where slapstick and chase scenes are there, but not as funny or as memorable as the original cartoons.
If you had placed Tom and Jerry in another story, their scenes mostly would stay the same, and if you remember the Tom and Jerry film from the early 90's where Tom and Jerry talked for the first time and had to help an orphaned girl find her father and escape custody of her wicked guardian and her lawyer, you can already tell that Tom and Jerry aren't meant to be in stories that are more personal to other characters.
There's even a couple of instances that the film would use toilet humor, and almost would forget it's even a Tom and Jerry movie especially with the live-action characters who are just so bland and instantly forgettable. Even the animation doesn't really fit into the real world, and while we have had movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit , Space Jam , as well as Looney Tunes: Back in Action , and I'm actually happy we can see more 2-D animation in a 3-D environment, but the animation on the animal characters looks like it would have come from the 's rather than the 's where Tom and Jerry could have had more realistic fur textures and still would retain their original designs and animation.
Granted, this style would be a little too realistic for Tom and Jerry themselves, but this movie feels like it should have been released when Tom and Jerry had a comeback in the early 's about a decade after their first failed attempt in a feature film. Plus having Tom and Jerry going for a 2-D look and every other animal is animated but not the humans can be distracting because if they wanted to, maybe this would have been much better as an all-out animated film.
It's almost like Tom and Jerry might have escaped from the world of Warner Bros characters perhaps from the new Space Jam sequel that's coming out and they are just an after-thought. And if they do have a cameo in that film just like several Warner Bros characters that will be making cameos in Space Jam: A New Legacy , it would make sense that maybe they escaped Hollywood and made it to New York City to get a break from the Hollywood cartoony mayhem with the Looney Tunes.
But who knows until we get a confirmed answer. So all and all, this movie is nothing special other than Tom and Jerry back on the silver screen since their film, and it's the most original Tom and Jerry film not counting all their direct-to-DVD movies where they have strange crossovers with The Wizard of Oz , Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and other classic stories. And I'll get to those later on, but now I'm glad that I was able to cover the live-action movie as well as their first movie which was also bad.
People need to take note and just stick with the classic shorts because Tom and Jerry don't work when they do movies that are up to minutes and doing a TV show about them is the better way to go. So do what you can and avoid this stinker and take Tom's advice of don't believing it. It's pretty bad that the people who made this couldn't make Tom and Jerry more appealing to those who grew up on it, and for kids nowadays who are glued to their smartphones and tablets and would watch clips of Tom and Jerry online.
So this movie is without a doubt some rotten cheese that even Jerry won't bother to take a bite of. Not the worst thing in animation, but the worst thing that Tom and Jerry have gotten into, even worse than their first movie for which they talked in.

We could all do animation history a great service by forgetting the era when Tom and Jerry were thrown into those poorly-animated Czech shorts. The less said of that disaster, the better. During the late s and throughout the s, Tom and Jerry were thrown into cash-grab straight-to-video movies that featured gimmicks like pirates, wizards and even Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory thrown into the mix. In short, no. But how could we know, since no one has ever actually attempted that simple transition? Studios always feel the need to include human characters or some big plot that Tom and Jerry somehow find themselves entangled in. If Shaun the Sheep can carry two movies, why has no one had enough faith in Tom and Jerry to carry a single movie by themselves?

Due to the popularity of the series of shorts, a show was officially created in and there have been various carnations of the original characters since its television debut. Here are several reasons that the live-action movie fails. However, the premise has to feature more than Tom and Jerry going back-and-forth for two hours. In a way, the filmmakers were trapped when trying to pen the live-action film. The concept of live-action cartoons has always been a tricky effort. The main issue tends to be that the cartoons tended to be lively and over-the-top, whereas the real-world element pales in comparison. While it is possible that the live-action adaption could operate under real-world rules, it would completely betray the Tom and Jerry source material. Yes, the core of the story is a mouse chasing a cat; however, the over-the-top shenanigans are what truly make the classic cartoon pop. Again, the filmmakers needed to deviate from the Tom and Jerry formula to create something bold and compelling, but since this movie is trying to cash off the name of an iconic cartoon, there was no way that was ever happening.

Episodes would just be squeezed in before a film or added as light entertainment as part of another show. From my memory Tom and Jerry has almost always been fully animated but for this film the producers have mixed the animation with live action. For this adventure the best of enemies are at each other throats as usual.

Gray cat Tom and brown mouse Jerry have been frenemies for decades, the pair bonking, zapping, and slapping one another until either Tom gets the last hit or Jerry chases the rodent off-screen — whichever happens first. Created by Hanna-Barbera in , the duo has appeared in hundreds of animated shorts for studio MGM between the years to , where they won seven Academy Awards. As one would expect, the film clearly tries to bank on nostalgia, using it to bait grownups into taking their children to a theatre and perhaps introduce them to the characters from their youth. The film is set in an alternative version of New York City, where all the animals are toons. And so, the cat-and-mouse game is on, as Tom and Jerry let their paws and claws loose in the fancy-schmancy hotel. It helps that the cast seem to be enjoying themselves and deliver relatively good performances. The voice cast is fine, too, if not slightly underwhelming.
On its surface, whether this movie needs to exist is immaterial. Beloved characters have been made, remade and rebooted over the years many times over many media. Tom and Jerry themselves have had several such renaissances — even through, believe it or not, a version where the classic cat-and-mouse rivals were actually best buds.
