This Manhattan-set adventure -- a mix of computer-generated animation and live-action comedy -- has Jerry Mouse crossing paths with his rival Tom Cat while looking for a place to live. But the main storyline focuses on Kayla Chloe Grace Moretz , a young woman who talks her way into a job at a posh hotel just before the wedding of the year.
When Tom and Jerry take their antics to the hotel, chaos ensues. As in all Tom and Jerry outings, you can expect a lot of slapstick cartoon violence, with an added kick here because it's depicted against a live-action backdrop. There are tons of physical comedy sight gags, like characters mostly Tom getting electrocuted, hit by lightning, and then electrocuted again, or falling from telephone wires or high-rise windows, or smashing into any conceivable door, roof, window, etc.
Tom is even hit by a car. Potty humor is also in the mix, courtesy of Spike the dog he literally does his business, loudly, in a scene that shows everything but the actual poop. Language includes some insults and a couple of utterances of "my God," characters both human and animal are shown sampling drinks, and there's mild romance: Tom falls for a female cat, characters flirt, and a couple shares a wedding-day hug and kiss.
Jerry causes Tom's piano to break, and from then on it's war The hotel is hosting the wedding of socialite couple Preeta Pallavi Sharda and Ben Colin Jost , so when Jerry is spotted, Kayla enlists Tom's help to capture the clever little mouse.
The latest reboot of this decades-old franchise is neither clever enough to win over new fans nor nostalgic enough to engage the generations raised on the cat-and-mouse shenanigans. While only some of the straight-to-DVD Tom and Jerry cartoons have been better than decent, at least they center on the title characters, even when they're thrown into existing storylines like Robin Hood , The Wizard of Oz , or a big Sherlock Holmes or fairytale crossover. Here, however, Tom and Jerry are secondary characters -- and, what's worse, the main plot isn't especially entertaining, particularly for kids who aren't going to care about a millennial who's trying to keep her day job or a society couple's over-the-top wedding.
There's no doubt that younger kids may still enjoy the physical if violent shenanigans at the heart of the action, although it's possible some may feel slightly unsettled by seeing animals repeatedly hurting each other in a realistic, live-action environment.
It's just not quite as funny as it is in a purely cartoon world. Just because kids will laugh at the chase scenes and poop jokes doesn't make the movie worthy of a family-night selection. Not that anyone was clamoring for it, but fans of this iconic duo deserve a reboot that's worth their time.

This title has: Too much violence. Helpful Report Report this review. Children deserve a better movie. They need to experience meaning and depth. These love sick movies, "cheat to get to the top," "we will put you under a spell with over the top action, noise and barbie doll characters" don't work for my children.
I watched them shrink as the movie advanced and I kept checking with them if I should stop it and they said, "no! It was good in the beginning, it will be good again. There was an air of relief in the room and their faces lit up again. My girls are 8 and 11 and I had stopped checking out films before I allow them to watch but I am reconsidering going back to that because movie producers are now giving children what they think the want fast food and do not realise that what goes into our generation of children is going to come out because cliche as it sounds, we are what we eat.

While very small viewers wont mind the wafer-thin storytelling, anyone with an age in double figures will agree these two are more suited to shorter bursts of anarchy. And while this feature captures the duo's manic rage, it's still weak sauce with unnecessary humans. Warner Brothers' latest attempt may not be the worst of the bunch, it still largely fails to bring any new wit or flavor to the party.

With family movies proving big business during the pandemic, Warner Bros are giving these two a shot at a feature length film, a Roger Rabbit style hybrid of animation and live action. They both find their way to a swanky New York hotel, where Jerry decides to take up residence. With Jerry causing chaos and threatening her job, Kayla hires Tom to eliminate the scourge. However, not everything goes according to plan. Here, director Tim Story Ride Along tries to strike a balance. Moretz is a whirlwind of energy, fitting the cartoonish tone perfectly but has little to do other than repeatedly fast talk her way out of trouble. Standing out above all of them is British newcomer Patsy Ferran as a quirky bell hop who has a habit of appearing out of nowhere. Stumbling into an opportunity for a temp job at a tony Manhattan hotel, she sabotages another applicant and assumes her identity. With just a bit of shading to add depth, animators strike a fair balance between CGI and pen-and-ink in their depiction of Tom, Jerry and the many other animals in the film. In the scene where Tom and Jerry meet for the first time, as the piano-playing cat busks in a park, extras stand in a group gawking at empty space as an unconvincing bit of drawn-in action unfolds.

Tom, who dreams of becoming a pianist, plays in Central Park acting as a blind cat to attract people while Jerry is in search of a new home. During one of Tom's performances, Jerry picks a fight with him which ends with Tom's piano destroyed, Jerry running off and Tom clashing with a gang of alley cats led by Butch. Kayla Forester is a young woman who does odd jobs.

As I watched talented actors struggle their way through a creaky script that could have just as easily been unearthed from a time capsule of the s, or the s, or the s, and spruced up a bit, I thought about how difficult it truly must have been for Hoskins to not only "interact" with animated characters in Who Framed Roger Rabbit , but how few actors since have effectively followed his example. Plenty of actors can now add to their CV that they've worked opposite characters of some kind that are created in post-production, but only a handful or two can claim that they did it well. But it fails in so many basic ways of cinematic storytelling.

Tom, Jerry, and various other creatures are rounded out enough to pass for vaguely three-dimensional creations, but they have the same appealing design simplicity as the 2D animation of yore. This is a path less traveled for adapting classic cartoon characters into a big-budget feature film. Roger Rabbit is the rare technological-breakthrough movie that was almost immediately made obsolete: a few years after its release, advances in CGI made sure that no one would have to go to such back-breaking trouble to combine live action and animation.
As the planning for the wedding gets underway, Kayla discovers that Jerry has taken up residence at the hotel, and so she hires his mortal enemy Tom to take care of the singular infestation before all eyes are on them. Her boss Mr. Ken Jeong plays the hotel chef. A scene in which Tom tries to reach Jerry across a power line hints at what this movie could have been if it had trusted its silent characters in, say, the manner that Aardman trusts fans of Shaun the Sheep. While Moretz throws herself into the bad material and tries to make the best of it, everything falls flat around her. I get it.
