Well, actually it looked very worn, but you know what I mean. Let me admit: I remember being very fond about the TV special upon which this book is based. In fact--well, let me do an annoying, but pointless, digression for those of you born this century. Back in the s, especially the early s, we were completely beholden to the TV broadcasters.

Movie distributors too, but that's a different [but related and still pointless:] rant. If you missed the broadcast of a TV show, well tough luck. Maybe you could catch the reruns, if they decided to rerun the broadcast in question, in the dog days of summer. Remember, VCRs didn't exist or were prohibitively expensive until fairly late in the s.
One of the things I've enjoyed about the Internet as a completely undiscriminating publishing medium is that quite a few things get captured and widely disseminated despite or because of the lack of financial incentive for the dissemination.
In this particular case: When I was young, we certainly didn't have VCRs--but my father was all too fond of tech even then, so we had cassette tape recorders. My solution, which I considered ingenious and unique, until I found out from the Internet about a year or so ago that a lot of people of my generation did exactly the same thing, was to hold the tape recorder up to our TV, demand silence from my family who completely ignored me, of course and using today's terminology hope to capture at least the audio stream from a TV show.
I even have a couple of cassettes I made 35 or maybe even 40 years old, of me talking at a very young age. Someday I'll have to put together the tools to transfer them digitally, so I can hear them again and be able to put them in my [virtual:] digital attic where I'll be able to listen to them till the end of time. Like you kids can do with new content nowadays for 99 cents and a couple of clicks at the iTunes store or Amazon MP3 stores.
Get off my lawn! Where was I? As what is now called a "tweener", I listened to that tape a lot, perhaps embarrassingly many times; for much of my life, I had a disproportionally large streak of romanticism and sentimentality. It got utterly crushed by my actual interactions with young women later in life but hey, innocence is the first casualty of war. Not that I've ever seen that movie--but I digress. The other aspect of this was that the only way to recapture TV and Movies at home and the only way for the dimwitted industries to monetize it by putting in people's homes was to Read The Book.
That is, a large chunk of the book publishing industry consisted of "novelizations" of TV shows and movies. A lot of readers and I suspect, publishers turn up their noses at such things, but I'm not the sort of person who sneers at writers who can do a solid job on a very tight deadline for almost no money. In my horse-headed opinion, some of the writers are quite talented and put their own angle on things, or even added new and creative slants to what were often not terribly creative stories.
Any way: This book is an example of a novelization. It consists of about 40 pages of art, and chunks of dialog, from the TV special. I enjoyed it, though not nearly as much as my tweener self enjoyed the cassette. In fact, I don't think my tweener self would have enjoyed this book much more. For one thing, by capturing only the audio stream, I was forced to use my imagination to fill in the pictures that went with the story and memory consists largely of imagination; don't let anyone tell you differently , and as nice as these pictures are, my made-up ones were probably nicer.
For another thing--well, I probably memorized the soundtrack, but I don't remember there being this much football, and this little "first kiss", in the story. I'll have to check it out sometime ;-.
