Three days later, the band taped a shot for late-night network TV music series that aired in March and the relationship between Kiss and television kicked off with a magnificent boob tube bang. For Kiss, the media marriage of music and television makes ferocious sense, as no other band in rock history has more potently matched sounds and visuals—before or since. With Halloween in the air, Kiss naturally works their way into both the music and video playlists of even non-fans. Brooklyn boy Peter Criss returned to the borough of his roots when the reunited original Kiss lineup, in complete makeup, stormed through a minute live set on September 4, for the MTV Video Music Awards. Why I Read This Book: I noticed it on the library shelf while helping our 4-year-old around the Children's section, and it looked fun.

Well, actually it looked very worn, but you know what I mean. Let me admit: I remember being very fond about the TV special upon which this book is based. In fact--well, let me do an annoying, but pointless, digression for those of you born this century. Back in the s, especially the early s, we were completely beholden to the TV broadcasters.

Movie dist Why I Read This Book: I noticed it on the library shelf while helping our 4-year-old around the Children's section, and it looked fun. Movie distributors too, but that's a different [but related and still pointless:] rant. If you missed the broadcast of a TV show, well tough luck. Maybe you could catch the reruns, if they decided to rerun the broadcast in question, in the dog days of summer. Remember, VCRs didn't exist or were prohibitively expensive until fairly late in the s.

One of the things I've enjoyed about the Internet as a completely undiscriminating publishing medium is that quite a few things get captured and widely disseminated despite or because of the lack of financial incentive for the dissemination.

In this particular case: When I was young, we certainly didn't have VCRs--but my father was all too fond of tech even then, so we had cassette tape recorders. My solution, which I considered ingenious and unique, until I found out from the Internet about a year or so ago that a lot of people of my generation did exactly the same thing, was to hold the tape recorder up to our TV, demand silence from my family who completely ignored me, of course and using today's terminology hope to capture at least the audio stream from a TV show.

I even have a couple of cassettes I made 35 or maybe even 40 years old, of me talking at a very young age. Someday I'll have to put together the tools to transfer them digitally, so I can hear them again and be able to put them in my [virtual:] digital attic where I'll be able to listen to them till the end of time. Like you kids can do with new content nowadays for 99 cents and a couple of clicks at the iTunes store or Amazon MP3 stores.

Get off my lawn! Where was I? As what is now called a "tweener", I listened to that tape a lot, perhaps embarrassingly many times; for much of my life, I had a disproportionally large streak of romanticism and sentimentality. It got utterly crushed by my actual interactions with young women later in life but hey, innocence is the first casualty of war. Not that I've ever seen that movie--but I digress. The other aspect of this was that the only way to recapture TV and Movies at home and the only way for the dimwitted industries to monetize it by putting in people's homes was to Read The Book.

That is, a large chunk of the book publishing industry consisted of "novelizations" of TV shows and movies. A lot of readers and I suspect, publishers turn up their noses at such things, but I'm not the sort of person who sneers at writers who can do a solid job on a very tight deadline for almost no money. In my horse-headed opinion, some of the writers are quite talented and put their own angle on things, or even added new and creative slants to what were often not terribly creative stories.

Any way: This book is an example of a novelization. It consists of about 40 pages of art, and chunks of dialog, from the TV special. I enjoyed it, though not nearly as much as my tweener self enjoyed the cassette. In fact, I don't think my tweener self would have enjoyed this book much more. For one thing, by capturing only the audio stream, I was forced to use my imagination to fill in the pictures that went with the story and memory consists largely of imagination; don't let anyone tell you differently , and as nice as these pictures are, my made-up ones were probably nicer.

For another thing--well, I probably memorized the soundtrack, but I don't remember there being this much football, and this little "first kiss", in the story. I'll have to check it out sometime ;-.

He stubbornly refused to hire an inker or letterer, saying that "it would be equivalent to a golfer hiring a man to make his putts for him. Because of the chemotherapy and the fact he could not read or see clearly, he announced his retirement on December 14, Schulz often touched on religious themes in his work, including the classic television cartoon, A Charlie Brown Christmas , which features the character Linus van Pelt quoting the King James Version of the Bible Luke to explain "what Christmas is all about.

Schulz, reared in the Lutheran faith, had been active in the Church of God as a young adult and then later taught Sunday school at a United Methodist Church. In the s, Robert L. Short interpreted certain themes and conversations in Peanuts as being consistent with parts of Christian theology, and used them as illustrations during his lectures about the gospel, as he explained in his bestselling paperback book, The Gospel According to Peanuts, the first of several books he wrote on religion and Peanuts, and other popular culture items.

For the uninitiated, night one is all about making an impression when you step out of the limo — however great or terrible it may be. And because this season features the largest number of contestants ever to start, cringey entrances were also at an all-time high. One got out of the limo in a blue spandex body sack for a rather lackluster reveal, while another stepped out barefoot for some unknown reason. One dude even called the women by the wrong names — yikes!
