With his first film since Synecdoche, New York, Charlie Kaufman jumps into the world of stop motion to create what looks to be his best piece of work yet. Charlie Kaufman has always been one of the most innovative and interesting minds in cinema. His films have always been able to focus on humanity, people, a question of identity, the meaning of life…basically just the idea of life in general when it all comes down to it. And now, seven years later, Kaufman is back and looks to have created his masterpiece…without actually using a single human being. Anomalisa sees Kaufman and his co-director, Duke Johnson, jump into the world of stop-motion animation while showing some of the most human characters on the big screen. Anomalisa will be one of the must see films of the year for all audiences and I really cannot wait until December for this movie to hit theaters.

CTP 83: Anomalisa
Anomalisa is one of the smaller films that he has starred in, but it deserves to be recognized for the artistic risks that it takes. Anomalisa tells the story of self-help author Michael Stone, voiced by David Thewlis. He is a mostly unremarkable man except he suffers from the Fregoli delusion and perceives everybody else as the same person. Everybody — receptionists, taxi drivers, even his own wife and son — has the same gormless face and soporific voice all voiced by Tom Noonan.
The film opens as he touches down in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he is attending a conference on customer service.
His ten-year-long isolation finally ends when he meets Lisa Hesselman, an insecure young woman with her own voice Jennifer Jason Leigh. He labels her an anomaly hence, Anomalisa , and they spend the night together.
The audience is treated to fast-paced action as well as detailed close-ups, which all look incredibly smooth and natural. Michael Stone endures awkward conversation with a taxi driver and long silences with a luggage porter, who are, again, all voiced by Tom Noonan. Search for:. Our Commitment. Become a Patron!

Review: ‘Anomalisa’ is an exceptional romance from Charlie Kaufman
In Anomalisa , an inspirational speaker in crisis checks into Cincinnati's fictional Al Fregoli hotel, named for a delusional condition in which paranoiacs believe that those around them are not who they appear to be, but a single tormentor hiding behind multiple disguises. That's a helpful bit of trivia to consider before entering into Charlie Kaufman's latest brainteaser, this one originally mounted just twice for composer Carter Burwell's "Theater of the New Ear" sound-play experiment and rescued from obscurity by a team of imaginative producers who thought it might make an interesting stop-motion project -- which it does, exceptional even, although it's unclear just who they imagined might be the audience for such a cerebral cult offering. Anomalisa 's existence is a minor miracle on multiple levels, from the Kickstarter campaign that funded it the credits give "special thanks" to 1, names to the oh-so-delicate way the film creeps up on you, transitioning from a low-key dark night of the soul into something warm, human and surprisingly tender. This despite the fact that it's told entirely through puppets -- which proved to be plenty expressive in Being John Malkovich , the film that put Kaufman on the cinematic map.
Anomalisa – Film Review V2.0
There's everything else happening in America cinema, and then there's whatever Charlie Kaufman is up to. Ever since 's " Being John Malkovich ," he has been on a short list of American screenwriters whose work is so original that he must be thought of as an auteur, even though film is supposedly a director's medium. Formidable filmmakers have adapted his scripts, including Spike Jonze "Malkovich" and " Adaptation " and Michel Gondry " Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind " and " Human Nature " , but however assured the results, they were still unmistakably Charlie Kaufman movies, speaking their own alternately down-to-earth and elevated language. Kaufman's mix of mordant humor, broad slapstick, self-aware storytelling devices, and images and language drawn from psychoanalysis, poetry and dreams coalesced even more strongly in his directorial debut, " Synecdoche, New York ," about a playwright spending years or a lifetime? The undercurrents of wonder and despair ran deeper there than in any other Kaufman story, even "Eternal Sunshine. They course throughout "Anomalisa" as well. The film could be described as a midlife crisis drama with puppets, about a depressed corporate efficiency expert voiced by David Thewlis who hears every voice, male or female, as the same voice Tom Noonan 's , and who becomes infatuated with a shy young woman Jennifer Jason Leigh who is attending his seminar in Cincinnati, Ohio.
‘Anomalisa’ Animation Company Debuts Bold New Short ‘Moonwrapped’ — Watch
Co-directors of the critically acclaimed stop-motion feature share insights on using a supposedly 'kid-friendly' animation technique for a decidedly adult film. A good film captures your attention in ways unlike those of other mediums. Unfortunately, however, as is too often the case, creative decisions regarding the medium itself — such an extensive use of visual effects or odd facial animation — overwhelm, distract or otherwise pull your attention away from the story, usually to the point of dissatisfaction with much or all of a film. Their use of stop-motion was a creative decision made specifically to impart the feeling with audiences that the characters in the story were overtly being controlled by forces they were unaware of.

What is it to ache? What is it to be alive? These are the same questions that the late Belgium filmmaker Chantal Akerman posed over 30 years ago in her black-and-white debut feature Je, Tu, Il, Elle. Both film provide profound examinations of alienation, regret and the human condition. Julie, suffering from a recent break-up, has confined herself to her bedroom for one month with only a bare mattress and a pen and paper for comfort. She gobbles on powdered sugar from a brown paper bag while pondering her existence.
A stop-motion masterpiece of modern alienation and banality: Anomalisa Podcast
Sad, beautiful, the wittiest film of the year, "Anomalisa" takes place largely in a hotel room in Cincinnati, where a customer service expert his well-regarded book: "How May I Help You Help Them? He's delivering the keynote address at a regional customer service conference. Honestly, could the premise for a feature-length story of middle-aged malaise and inchoate yearning be any drabber? And yet directors Duke Johnson and Charlie Kaufman, working from a script Kaufman originally wrote and staged a decade ago, transform the comedy of quiet desperation into an occasion for serious pleasure. If you have a problem with stop-motion animation, "Anomalisa" isn't your movie. We are there, spying on the action in various parts of the Al Fregoli hotel with Michael and his acquaintances.
Movie Review: “Anomalisa”, Starring David Thewlis
Michael Stone is, I believe, experiencing a psychotic break. The protagonist of. Nonplussed, even, as if he's grown accustomed to it.
