A little intro first… It goes without saying that as we grow older, we tend to reflect back on those things in our lives that influenced and shaped us in our childhood and adolescence — movies, music, television, advertisements, books, games and toys, and of course our family, friends, school and the people around us. Over the years most of us were exposed to a sensory overload of images — a lot of which kept us entertained , especially when we were bored, for hours on end.
So with that being said… The focus on this particular post is on our beloved, faithful canine companions and friends that we welcomed into our homes each week. The following gallery captures the majority of those that really stood out over the years.
Few adventures in the animation industry are ever complete without these fictional dogs, who have been around for nearly a century. Several of these famous cartoon dogs are legends because they personify the most important characteristics of a loyal, trustworthy and affectionate friend, which is what most dogs tend to be.
Some of them are actually heroes themselves and battle evil elements to save the world or at least their unsuspecting master. Quite a few of these famous canine critters make us laugh with their irreverent, quirky, unique styles, which we never seem to get tired of as the years go by.
See how many of these bring back fond childhood memories….. And here they are ….. They protected the flock from a wolf or other predator. The bigger dog reminded me of a boxer and a mutt was always close by. They ware always cautious and at the same time getting in trouble I believe one cartoon involved a Jamaican with a spear on a hunting mission.
The name Smedly comes to my mind? There was a cartoon dog that tended sheep and protected them from wolfs. This was a cartoon in the 50s or early 60s.
Fred Basset in his own cartoon and Ruff in Denis the Menace. They might be British cartoons, I am not sure. Great job! Would you consider adding Sam Sheepdog from Looney Toons? He was favorite of mine growing up. Does anyone remember this character? That could be a challenge although a number of them appear in pics above on this post.
Also the dog from Fifal goes west, or the dog in rockadoodle… You got fifi but you forgot spike from the rugrats lol. Trying to find the name of a dog in an old cartoon, I believe he was white. The setting was always snowy and he carried a first aid beryl or brandy beryl around his neck. I recall the end of the intro had the dogs riding away the old car over the hills…. Does anyone remember Q.
Hush and his dog Shamus? The dog looks exactly like a little white cartoon dog with white bangs. I have a question…. He was lost, and looking for his family or maybe looking for his grandfather…. I was very young, not sure on the Exact details…. I think it was an Anime. I think I watched it on Nickelodeon…again not sure.

Oh no, there's been an error
Everything about this world must ring true, and the facts of the imagination must become as acceptable as the facts of reality. This turned out to be a lot harder to put together than I expected. Back when I did a list of great Kurosawa moments in honor of the th anniversary of the great Japanese director's birth, it was an easy enough feat to find moments from his movie filmography that were characteristic of his overreaching themes, definitive of his career and just flat out fun. Seriously, there are at least such examples to be found in the scant seven minutes of One Froggy Evening , Duck Amuck or Feed the Kitty alone. I mean, does anyone really have to be reminded how amazing Elmer singing "Kill the wabbit! Or the perfect timing of the countless pratfalls and sight gags of the Road Runner cartoons?

This inventive mixture of live-action and animation served to introduce the character of Bosko, a lovable and ever-jovial character. Animator Rudolf Ising sits at his drawing board and before our eyes creates Bosko, who comes to life and shows us "what he can do" in a series of snappy musical and comedy routines. The film opens with Bosko taking a bath while singing "Singin' in the Bathtub". A series of gags allow him to play the shower spray like a harp, pull up his pants by tugging his hair, and give the limelight to the bathtub itself which stands on its hind feet to perform a dance. Bosko and Honey are joined by a zoo full of animals who are having too much fun to get any work done on a construction site. A goat's transformation into a hot-air balloon is a surreal highlight.

They were a great team, they had Mr. October Reggie Jackson , and, most importantly to me, they had Thurman Munson. I was a fan because his name sounded like Herman Munster. It should come as no surprise to you that I was and probably still am a bigger fan of The Munsters than of the Yankees. Instead I want to write about Looney Tunes.

Charlie Dog has always been one of Chuck Jones' most interesting characters though technically created by Bob Clampett in Porky's Pooch , it was Jones that helped shape the character with further toons. He's not a bad guy, but he never gets his way in any cartoon he's ever been in. All he wants is a good home, but the only way he seems to be able to do this is force himself on any poor soul he comes across. In Dog Gone South , Charlie wanders onto the plantation of a southern Colonial whose state-of-mind seems to be stuck in Civil War times , and tries to make it his new home.

The name is somewhat alliterative and is inspired by Yosemite National Park. With his fiery, irascible temper, short stature in two early gags in "Hare Trigger", a train he is attempting to rob passes right over top of him and he has to use a set of portable stairs to get on his horse; in " Bugs Bunny Rides Again ", he rides a "miniature" horse , and fiery red hair, Sam was in some ways an alter-ego of Freleng. The animator often denied any intentional resemblance. However, in the " Looney Tunes Golden Collection ", surviving members of his production crew assert, and the late director's daughter acknowledges, that Sam definitely was inspired by Freleng.
In many animations and comics, but sometimes in live action as well, hot dogs are sold in "strings", convenient for playing for comedy. Realistically, these sausages would be raw if they're still strung together, but characters frequently treat them as if they're cooked—making it clear that this trope operates by the Rule of Funny. The most common of these gags involves a dog at a picnic grabbing one frank and running off with the whole string and consequently, the lunch from several people. Another example might be a team of Strong Ants hauling the franks away like a train. Link sausages sold in strings are rarely seen as such anymore, at least in the USA, since there are far fewer butcher shops than there used to be.
The Belvedere Story. Belvedere began his illustrious career in the early sixties when his creator, former Disney and MGM animator, George Crenshaw transferred his talents from live cartoons to the wonderful world of gag cartooning. Belvedere became an instant success with the public and was picked up by many major syndicates including King Features. George himself is one of the master ink slingers of our time. As a former Disney animator, George worked on such classics as Pinocchio and Fantasia. George transferred his beloved Belvedere to his new owner Johansen International Features in Australia.
