By Chris E. From Ghostbusters and Jumanji to Beetlejuice and even, somehow, Evolution, a long list of '80s and '90s movies weren't content with sticking to the big screen. Instead, far too many to count were also adapted into animated series aimed at a young audience--sometimes much younger than the original film. Of course, cartoons led to toys, which often led to a much more substantial pop-culture footprint for a number of these properties.

There are only a few weeks each year for families to get in the Halloween spirit, and everyone should take advantage of it.

Simba, Ariel, bloody Mulan What about the little guys? The lesser-known characters you adored as a wide-eyed six-year-old, your world as yet untouched by a hapless princess who turns everything she touches to ice, or a forgetful fish who sounds a lot like Ellen DeGeneres. They're still hanging around somewhere - and they're waiting for some recognition. Today is that day.

The Best of the Rest: Ranking 19 Non-Disney Animated Musicals

The '90s were truly a golden age for animated films. Disney ruled the box office with an iron fist, leading to a veritable avalanche of animated movies, created in hopes of usurping Disney from the throne. The rise of VHS allowed '90s kids everywhere to enjoy their favorite animated films over and over again, much to the displeasure of their parents. Still, as we grew older, we held onto most of our memories of these films, but there were a few we managed to forget along the way. With the release of 's The Little Mermaid , Walt Disney Animation Studios realized that they had hit upon a tried-and-true formula that defined the studio, and animation in general, for much of the s. With critical and commercial hits such as Beauty and the Beast , Aladdin , and The Lion King , not to mention the computer-generated marvels from Pixar that the studio was distributing at the time, it was hard to escape the behemoth that was Disney's animated output in the '90s. Alongside their brand of musical features, films from all over the world were slowly redefining the potential for what feature-length animated storytelling could entail.

Though " Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs " didn't win its Oscar nomination for best original score, Disney was given an honorary award to recognize the feature's innovation in filmmaking. Disney didn't only receive one statue. He received one regular-sized statue and seven miniature Oscars to denote the film's seven dwarfs. After a few nominations, Disney won its first major Academy Awards for one of its animated features. After around two decades of mostly forgettable movies, Walt Disney Animation Studios produced " The Little Mermaid " to critical acclaim.

Pixar and Disney have dominated the animation landscape for quite some time. Since the first Academy Award was given for Best Animated Feature in , 14 of the winners in that category have been from one of those two studios. But there's so much more to the world of animation than just the mouse and a hopping lamp.
