In addition to height, it also may depend on the performer's personality or lifestyle. With that said, it wasn't uncommon for Disney to have gay men play Minnie Mouse or Daisy Duck or certain fullly-suited female characters; because then they could be all girlish and flirt with adult males attending the park, and no one would be the wiser. IDK if this still happens, though if it does, Disney would probably get a bad rep from doing so!
I mean, it's not like having women play Mickey Mouse due to them being generally just the right size for The Mouse himself. Men dressing as women has always been a somewhat topical subject, and animes have often poked fun at it even Pokemon, with James of Team Rocket often going into drag, and he has often been accused by the fanbase of being gay as a result!

In fact, when Disney first started releasing their "untouchable" animated movies to home video in in their "Walt Disney Classics" collection, "Robin Hood" was the first title, because it was less-likely for a theatrical reissue. But I think one big possibility is that "Robin Hood" was usually very popular with the furry fandom. Since a good number of furries are homosexual not me, but I am comfortable around other furries that are!
Could Disney be aware of this movie being popular with the furry fandom? Disney sure knows how to make handsome-looking foxes, AND some pretty good wolves too. Being one of the first Disney animated films to be released following the death of Walt Disney, Robin Hood was released at a rough time for the studio. The story is simple and episodic, following various adventures of Robin Hood and Little John as they rob from the rich and give to the poor, repeatedly thwarting the schemes of Prince John and his cronies, who have taxed the people of Nottingham into poverty. Prince John is an egomaniac who throws tantrums like a spoiled child, and is complimented by his cowardly snake assistant, Sir Hiss. The animation is fun and lively, but unfortunately it also reveals the limited resources Disney was working with at the time, with some animated segments being recycled in different scenes, and sometimes the animation is simply replicated from previous Disney movies. Still, Disney made the best with what they had to work with at the time. As previously mentioned, the story is rather simple, and mostly shows up in small bursts, instead of one overarching plot. This leads some moments to stray from the main story a bit, which may be distracting to some.
