In the latest news, Sword Art Online Volume 26 has been announced for an October 8, release later this year. This makes it the third SAO release this year.

Sword Art Online has come a long way. From its humble origins as a web story written by Reki Kawahara in , Sword Art Online was eventually published by ASCII Media Works as a series of light novels and adapted into an anime that took the world by storm in While hardly the first isekai or stuck-in-a-video-game story, Sword Art Online would turn out to be a harbinger for both of those genres, leading the way to isekai becoming one of the most pervasive genres in the medium today. Despite its popularity, though, the first few arcs of Sword Art Online feature writing that is more than a little rough, with stories that are more big ideas than realized concepts and characters that prioritize being cool over being emotionally interesting. Over time, though, Kawahara's writing has matured, with more recent arcs showing a more thoughtful side to his world and - importantly - his characters. Now, with his revisit of the story that started it all getting a movie adaptation with Sword Art Online Progressive , we're seeing the fruits of Kawahara's decades of experience, and nothing exemplifies this better than how different the story's hero Kirito is in Progressive.

The story begins with Kirito learning more about Cross Edge, a new game designed by a middle school genius. At the Dicey Cafe, he overhears rumors of a hooded player attacking others out of nowhere. If you happen to lose to them, you also lose a portion of your memory. Kirito and his friends start playing Cross Edge to crack down on the surprise attacks, but it looks like the hooded menace is already planning their next move. You can swap between three different characters and build up the damage multiplier by using your attacks and skills. As you control one on-field character and their basic attacks, the two other characters can jump into combat when you activate their skills. Enemies have a diamond gauge that fills up when they take damage. If you manage to fill the gauge, you automatically stun the opponent and enter Burst mode, which significantly increases your damage output. In the two trailers, developer Bandai Namco Entertainment hinted at a few familiar faces that will join the Cross Edge journey.

Kirito and Asuna's video game adventures aren't over just quite yet—a new anime based on the Sword Art Online : Progressive light novels has just been announced. The announcement trailer was shown following the final episode of the currently airing season of the anime's fourth season, Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of the Underworld. The fifteen-second clip shows a young Asuna standing in Tokyo's Shibuya Crossing. While there is very little information from the clip, fans familiar with the franchise and the Progressive novels can see that this new series will recount the events of SAO's Aincrad Arc from Asuna's point of view. This announcement came as a surprise to many fans, as many believed the Alicization: War of the Underworld season would be the last one in the main story, as its the last arc covered in the source material's light novels. The Sword Art Online: Progressive light novels were first released in Japan in , around a decade after the original novels were released. Penned by Reki Kawahara, the creator of the original SAO light novels, this series is a retelling of Kirito and Asuna's initial adventures while trapped in Akihiko Kayaba's deadly game.
