Tradition has been subverted. Anyway, since the last movie, Bea has written and illustrated a book about Peter. She and Thomas print and bind the books in their home and sell them in his quaint little toy shoppe. But is he?

Simon Pickard has been working in visual effects for over 20 years. It was an absolute pleasure to return to Peter Rabbit. I was excited to go back as well because it was such a fun, crazy ride the first time, and one of the best experiences of my professional career. Will Gluck is a brilliant writer, a sardonic wit, a collaborator open to ideas from all corners and an absolute perfectionist who never stops looking for ways to make his movie funnier and more. There were definitely moments on the first movie where we were panicking about finishing on time because he just would not stop changing things right up until the final nail-biting second before everything had to be delivered. Having gone through it once though I was prepared this time, and I knew that the final product would be something special that everyone working on it would be proud of.

The film opens with the wedding of Thomas Domhnall Gleeson and Bea Rose Byrne , with all their friends, human and animal, in attendance. Peter appears to go berserk and attacks Thomas, leading the other animals to attack the humans until Peter makes Thomas float away on balloons. Bea then gets a letter in the mail from a publisher who wants to distribute her books. The other rabbits, barring a suspicious Cottontail, seem to like Nigel, until he presents his marketing plan toward the rabbits, which paints Peter as a troublemaker. They even see a billboard for a potential Peter Rabbit movie , which makes him look outright villainous. A dismayed Peter walks away from the group and goes into town, where he meets an older rabbit named Barnabas Lennie James.

Perhaps the first big-name casualty of pandemic cinema closures, Peter Rabbit now gets to hop again. It may not be for the Beatrix Potter purists and has a scattershot quality, but remains enjoyable for its brisk 93 minutes. The B plot takes on another pervading swipe at the first flick: the betrayal of the gentle whimsy of the original tales in favour of something loud and brash. Here, Bea Rose Byrne is wooed by big-name publisher Nigel Basil-Jones David Oyelowo, embracing a rare chance to play fun , who wants to take the characters based on her family and put them on a beach or blast them into space. Although containing some fun moments — Peter and Barnabas play whack-a-mole in a recycling bin; an escape from a domestic kitchen — the first half lacks narrative drive. It feels a little thin and generic compared to family fare like The Mitchells Vs The Machines , but the Byrne-Gleeson combo is winning and Gluck injects just enough slapstick and smarts to justify the last-gasp gag about a sequel.

Animation and visual effects studio Animal Logic was responsible for many of Peter Rabbit's VFX shots, from planning the shoot, to filming with stand-ins, building a whole raft of adorable CG characters and then animating them. Peter Rabbit tells the story of a group of rabbits and other animals who think they have overcome the dreaded Mr. McGregor Sam Neill , only to find a new member of the McGregor family Domhnall Gleeson has taken up residence instead, and has become interested in their animal-loving friend Bea Rose Byrne. Incorporating this ensemble of human actors was one of the first big challenges faced by the filmmakers, since the actors would regularly be interacting with Peter voiced by James Corden and his furry friends.
