Film Review: Kung-Fu Panda 2

The logo isn't much but it is our first look at any official imagery from the sequel, not that it's going to look much different than the first one mind you.

We already know generally what the sequel will be about - Po the Panda and the rest of the Kung Fu animals facing up against a new villain and weapon that threatens the very existence of the titular martial art. Thanks to the official Kung Fu Panda site we have a little more clarity on the film's story. Take a look at the official synopsis below:. But how can Po stop a weapon that can stop kung fu? He must look to his past and uncover the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will he be able to unlock the strength he needs to succeed.

I was a big fan of Kung Fu Panda when it came out a couple of years ago and it's one of the rare 21st century animated films that I think a sequel is totally warranted for. Usually, making sequels to these kinds of movies is a cash grab and nothing more The Ice Age and Shrek franchises comes to mind , but there's a lot more story that can be told with these characters. Just when you thought the voice cast was at its most star-studded with the first Kung Fu Panda, they go ahead and add a few more names to the pile of awesomeness.

Most importantly, can they top the first one? Scottish born Ross Miller has been a movie fan ever since he can remember. He is a fan of all types of cinema from drama to action, comedy to western, thriller to sci-fi and almost everything else in between although he has a general dislike for most musicals and romantic comedies.

He cites some of his favorite movies as Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski, Psycho and Mulholland Drive but finds himself annoyingly garnering new favorites almost every other week. He describes himself as a writer and a fan, a fan and a writer - but not always in that order. By Ross Miller Published Nov 07, Share Share Tweet Email 0. Related Topics Movie News kung fu panda 2.

When it comes to Dreamworks Animation a number of popular and everlasting projects have been created, either on their own or in collaboration. As far as the latter goes, it doesn't seem like the franchise has any plans to slow down anytime soon. We were interested in learning more about this project and how it ties together with the overall franchise, so we spoke with the two executive producers. Shaunt Nigoghossian and Peter Hastings took the time to chat with us, and we learned a lot. That actually was between the first and second movies. And then I did a bunch of other stuff and had a great relationship with Dreamworks and I had done other shows there. And then they asked me if I wanted to come and work, and for me, that means working with Po, which is really fun.

When the cannons turn towards the Giant Panda and his Kung Fu master friends, their awesome skill at martial arts comes to naught.

For its last several releases DreamWorks animators have been using HP workstations exclusively. The original Kung Fu Panda film, released in , used more than 50 terabytes of data and required nearly 25 million render hours. With the switch to stereoscopic 3D and the ever-escalating demands of filmmakers, Kung Fu Panda 2 used terabytes of data and required more than 55 million render hours. One render hour means 1 hour of processing time on one CPU core. An 8-core dual quadcore computer can do 8 render hours in one hour. DreamWorks must have farmed out much of the final rendering to outside render farms, but does not discuss such arrangements. Po must look to his past and uncover the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will he be able to unlock the strength he needs to succeed. A large studio like DreamWorks Animation uses these blockbuster franchises to advance their state of the art, then takes advantage of them in films with less potential payback to lower costs. In KFP2 new technical achievements were required to produce character effects like fur, feathers, cloth and armor, that fill the entire KFP2 world, not just limiting visual richness to the main characters.

There are certain films that I absolutely adore, and yet very rarely find myself in the mood to re-watch. Take, for example, Logan — a gritty send-off to the X-Men franchise and the character Wolverine. By all accounts, this is one of my favourite films of all time. The writing, cinematography, pacing and acting are all superb and I would recommend Logan to everyone, X-Men fan or not.

I love the first film and its art book.

The story is set in a fantasy wuxia genre version of ancient China populated by humanoid animals. The pictures on this page are a collection of artworks created for the movies and the spin-off series. Po might just be the laziest, clumsiest panda in the Valley of Peace, but he secretly dreams of becoming a kung fu legend. When the villainous snow leopard Tai Lung threatens Po's homeland, the hapless panda is chosen to fulfil an ancient prophecy and defend the Valley from attack. Training under Master Shifu, Po embarks on an epic high-kicking adventure….

DreamWorks Animation Sets Kung Fu Panda 2 Date

Historically, summer has long been the season when film critics moan and groan and gnash their teeth and talk about how there are too many movie sequels and too few original ideas. I'll be honest, though: I think Kung Fu Panda was made for sequels, and I'm quite happy to have the gang back for a second big-screen adventure—even if it is a little light on new ideas. Because really, so what? These are movies about animals that do kung fu. They are, essentially, Saturday morning cartoons rendered for the big screen and, in the second installment, in 3-D. The original was an appealing blend of goofy comedy, martial arts scenes that mixed Jackie Chan-styled cartoonishness with Charlie Chaplin-esque slapstick, and well-intentioned messages about being yourself and standing up for what's right. It did all these things well, and the sequel is just as good; I'm perfectly content to see all this done for a second time, in a different setting and with a tweaked plot.

Nonetheless, it had no shortage of fans, and further adventures were always on the cards. Kung Fu Panda 2 is a happy equal to the perfectly enjoyable original, if not slightly better. This time around, the panda of the title, Po, once again voiced by Jack Black, is searching for inner peace.

The Kung Fu Panda universe is no stranger to the small screen. But the newest expansion of this franchise, the Netflix program Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight , breaks new ground by being the first of these shows to feature Jack Black reprising the role as Po. Even better, The Dragon Knight hands Po a new adventure with its fair share of charms.
