5 random reasons to watch trese on Netflix

It launched internationally on June 11 and is based on the Neil Gaiman-endorsed graphic novel. The release is a milestone, marking the first time Filipino folklore has moved to the forefront of Western media. The series follows Detective Alexandra Trese, an investigator of supernatural crimes and corruption in Metro Manila. Alexandra solves cases alongside her two half-deity brothers, known as The Kambal, who protect her with their mystical abilities.

As a vigilante heroine, she is easy to root for. With a fearless attitude and a stylish flair in bagging the baddies, she carries the right dose of vulnerability that unfolds towards the finale.

Additionally, her cosplay-friendly look was inspired by Jose Rizal , a nice nod to the national hero of the Philippines. One of the most appealing aspects of Trese are the monsters. They are introduced throughout the cases: the dwarf-like Duwendes who inhabit dirt mounds, the mischievous half-men and half-horse Tikbalangs, evil aborted fetuses known as Tiyanaks and more.

However, these creatures do not simply hide in the shadows and prey on the citizens. They live among the people as villains or allies, run kidnapping rings and sit as kingpins of crime. Nearing the premiere date, Netflix played on the street criminal theme through interactive marketing. The fans played along as it garnered more excitement for the release. The episodes are fast-paced, bouncing from case to case and delivered in a way that makes it accessible for everyone.

Filipinos will find its backdrop nostalgic, fans of the graphic novel will be pleased to see the world translated into color, and first-timers will find the new lore refreshing. What makes Trese more than just another procedural anime is how it weaves in the politics, culture, values and real-life horrors of Filipinos.

Episode three shows how deeply rooted Catholicism is through a misunderstood Tiyanak who desires more than what meets the eye. Steered by haunting plots, there was a missed opportunity to elevate the series with an overarching scare factor. Its source material blurred the line between noir and horror, giving Manila its own bleak personality and a mood that is absent from the series.

Fortunately, the lack of dread doesn't detract from the quality of the storytelling. After coming on board and reading the Trese graphic novel, he and the writers Zig Marasigan, Mihk Vergara and Tanya Yuson decided on which volumes to adapt for the inaugural season. In a conversation with the San Francisco Public Library , Tan shared the tale of a woman who refused to believe in the monsters that made the headlines of local newspapers.

Then she noticed strange behavior from her six-month-old baby. Suspecting possession, the mother slapped it and commanded the evil to leave her child. Instead of crying, it turned towards her… as if provoking her to do it again. After praying for endless hours, the baby returned to normal. Tan revealed that this was from his childhood. In fact, he was the possessed baby. For the conception of Alexandra, the behind-the-scenes special Trese After Dark reveals she was originally envisioned as a male character, inspired by the likes of Batman, John Constantine, Fox Mulder and Gil Grissom.

After seeing the first sketch, Tan realized there were too many male protagonists in detective stories.

He told Baldisimo that Detective Trese should be a female. It was a wise choice, as proven by the multiple awards and accolades it received since then. There are seven volumes total, but as of now only the first three have U. For those unfamiliar with Filipino horror and mythology, Trese is the perfect springboard. It has a total of six half-hour episodes, a quick binge that can easily be paired with Trese After Dark.

Ultimately, the biggest triumph of Trese is how unapologetically Filipino it is with every fiber of its being. Get weekly news, editorials, rare images from the Fango vault, special deals and more. The dust has settled, the easter eggs have been revealed. It's now time for a Trese rewatch! Budjette Tan wrote scripts after office hours while Kajo Baldisimo drew one page a day during his lunch breaks. The now-classic series was picked up by Netflix for an animated adaptation with industry veteran Jay Oliva at the helm. Soundbars made watching Trese a whole lot more enjoyable. The Sembrandt HT combined with a large viewing screen combined for a theater experience. One thing the Sembrandt soundbars really highlighted was the differences in the recording quality of each dub. The English and Japanese dub had brighter high and low frequencies. The Filipino dub sounded compressed. It adds another point we hope to see the Pinoy animation industry improve upon.

Netflix Trese Review – Definitely Worth the Hype

Episode 1 of Trese begins in Manila as we learn more about the secrets this city holds. During the day all is well but at night the shadows grow darker and stir. Unfortunately, that is beginning to unravel. The light forces are starting to dwindle, with Alexandra Trese the one shining beacon of hope. Her family has been the bridge between the light and dark for some time now, flirting that thin line between the two states. With train passengers missing and a dead ghost used as a sacrifice, Trese heads off to find answers. This brings her before a sewer-dwelling goblin called Nuno and the leader of the Aswang Clan, who both point toward a corrupt official involved with mermaid bones. With elections coming up, Mayor Santamaria does his best to try and spin these deaths to his benefit.

Manila's law enforcement have no means to combat the insidious supernatural forces that rule the city's criminal underworld. If it weren't for.

Trese co-creators Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo applied a similar approach to their supernatural procedural comic set in modern-day Manila. When Filipinos moved out of the provinces to the city, did they bring their monsters and gods with them? Trese adds new life to the supernatural genre, elevating traditional stories passed down through countless generations across the Philippines. The series stars occult detective Alexandra Trese, who tussles with a variety of supernatural manifestations while wielding the powers of the Mandirigmang-Babaylan warrior-shaman and armed with a collection of antiquities including a magical dagger called The Sinag.

It tells the story of Alexandra Trese, a detective who deals with crimes of supernatural origin. Brawl Quest players will be able to unlock Alexandra Trese as a playable character in the game with powerful Rock-type moves. And just like in the comics, players will have her face off against mythical monsters, like the dreaded Mananaggal. Brawl Quest will have a free login event where players can unlock and level up Trese from May 28 to June 6. So far, there is still one more crossover character to make their way into Brawl Quest, based on their promotional images thus far. For the uninitiated, Trese will also be jumping out of comic book pages and into animated territory with an all-new Netflix series, starring Filipina-Canadian actress Shay Mitchell from Pretty Little Liars fame as the titular heroine Trese.

Sporting a deft blend of gritty crime drama, high octane action, and reverence for Philippine folklore and tradition, Trese stood out from its peers.

It was early October of this year when I finished reading all three volumes of Trese. Picking up from that idea our discussion led to making November a Haunting Tales special. I discovered Trese a few Decembers ago. I had picked up volume 1 as a present for a friend. It was around May the following year that my friend told me she enjoyed the book and had already bought the second volume.
