The eight-year run of that lovely cartoon about love and war and play and drudgery and jealousy and generosity and birth and death and everything under the postapocalyptic sun and moon has recently fetched up to stream in its entirety on HBO Max Cartoon Network is a branch on the same corporate tree. And four new specials have been commissioned, the better to get you to subscribe, my dears. The series fulfilled an arc , but when you have created a believable if bizarre wide world and filled it with memorable characters , the least of whom suggest unexplored dimensions and depth, you still have a lot of room to move. There is always the likelihood, in every revival, of not living up to the original, especially when the point is less to make art — art, I said it — than to exploit a brand. Cartoons, of course, are indefinitely exploitable, as age does not wither them. It is not insincere so much as unnecessary.

So now, Wizard City is going to have a hell of a lot to live up to compared to both this episode and Obsidian, as this was a pretty spot on send off to the characters of Finn and Jake, who are now destined to adventure again into their next lives. Like with Obsidian, this gives closure to the characters it focuses on while bringing in necessary continuity for longtime fans to build on, in this case being Finn learning to let go of Jake, who has always been more zen about passing on than Finn would like. And naturally, since Finn and Jake were pretty young during the series, most everyone else has died before them, leading to plenty of neat cameos from characters spanning just about every single season. Although it was pretty sad to learn that Choose Goose had died. I honestly really wish that this had ended up being the last one, because Wizard City has a pretty dang high bar to clear.

The animated series had ran its course on Cartoon Network, with an emotional farewell and an incredibly complex story getting a satisfying conclusion. But like any series that had developed a huge following, Adventure Time was never going to stay gone for long. The first of four promised specials, Adventure Time: Distant Lands , will focus on BMO, the cute little handheld video game creature both Finn and Jake became very close with over the course of the series. HBO and WarnerMedia make note of Adventure Time being available at launch on May 27th, but there is no exact word on whether that is the existing run of episodes or this first special. It is likely that Distant Lands will be available at least shortly after launch, if not immediately. The trailer talks of a doomed alien world before introducing BMO in a cowboy hat, clearly serving as the first hero.

By handing off the torch to new characters living hundreds of years after the time of Finn and Jake, the story felt open-ended but complete: Adventure Time is, effectively, forever. BMO is still the star of their own show , tumbling into weird adventures by accident in the first of these new elongated episodes, simply titled BMO. Distant Lands as a whole does give the show's beloved supporting cast some charming postscript, briefly checking in on some fan favorites: Peppermint Butler is still a creepy weirdo, Choose Goose is carting around illegal moisturizer, later found judged for rhyme crimes. But his circumstances were left unclear, and Jake conspicuously absent, with one of his daughters appearing in his place. Together Again is somewhat surprising in its immediate nostalgia, which at first separates it from the other vignettes of Distant Lands. At first, it feels like just another episode of Adventure Tim e, with the old opening credits and title cards making a return, the opening five or 10 minutes going back to a much older status quo where Finn still has both arms and his old yellow sword.

Adventure Time is an amalgamation of important cartoon firsts for me. It was the first I encountered to thoughtfully reflect on troubled parental relationships, the first to show queer love, and the first to highlight mental illness. It kept me company through my late troubled teenage years, comforting me into my early 20s. Adventure Time was an apology to my childhood, making up for time lost feeling invisible. When it ended, I was oddly distraught for a while. Distant Lands brings closure for those of us who miss the Land of Ooo in a satisfying mini-series that remembers what made the original so special.
