Higurashi gou 24

I had only ever watched the very first season of Higurashi way back when the now-defunct Geneon Entertainment released that bad boy on dollar discs for 4 Higurashis episodes. The company folded before they could release Higurashi When They Cry — Kai meaning those sticking to legal methods for anime consumption were SOL for about a decade. In the interim between Kai and Gou, initially billed as a remake, Sentai Filmworks would release the entire classic Higurashi, which you could buy for a staggering 17 dollars during one of their bi-yearly big sales. Seeing Satoko and Rika, the youngest of the main cast, aged up several years in the Sotsu poster weighed on my brain. Having never figured out how OG Higurashi resolved, and only vaguely remembering some of the greater-story tidbits offered in that very first series, I now had to bite the bullet.

I watched several episodes of this because I'd heard "When They Cry" was a great anime series and I actually didn't realize that this wasn't that show but a remake. And I was really confused because what I saw was so bad and I thought, how could this be a classic? I watched three episodes before I realized my mistake, then watched the original, which is notably better.

While the first two episodes of this remake are all cutesy games and banter with almost none of the mystery and horror, the original got going by episode 2, and the card game in episode one was genuinely entertaining, unlike the more elaborate games of this sequel. One of the big annoyances of this series is the nails-on-chalkboard voices of the girls. They are all painfully cutesy. In the original there was more variety, with Rena's cutsiness balanced out by Mion's dryer delivery.

I wondered if it was just bad dubbing so I watched one episode with subtitles but they did the same thing in Japan. The animation is also more straightforward and less wild, and I found that rather dull and conventional.

Miyo wakes up in her office, clearly having experienced an alternate fragment and, like Teppei, considered it more than a dream, but a warning of what will come if she continues on her set path. The orders to get rid of her in that fragment come down from Nomura, a woman in Tokyo Miyo trusted. She gets a call from Nomura shortly after waking up.

We certainly go into that final season knowing more than we did even one week ago. And the most important thing resolved this week is that Satoko is indeed a full-on sociopath at this point. Possessiveness is at the heart of so many sufferings in Buddhism — not merely materialism, but to those we love. And indeed she is a sort of ghost in this scenario, living a timeless existence forever at a remove from the plane all of her associates live on. A better person than Satoko might see this is a noble purpose in being a looper, but she sees it — and them — only as a tool to facilitate her obsession. In the end Satoko is interested only in one thing, and one person.

At long last, here it is — the final episode of Higurashi Gou. But when Satoko learns that Takano may not go ahead, she decides to take things into her own hands and steals the three vials of H

Throughout the last Higurashi episode of , I was waiting for the last pin to drop. But even with an intense, bloody finale, it feels like they tacked one climactic fight at the tail-end of a long, anticlimactic series of episodes that spent too much time trying to create a false sense of normalcy when it was far too apparent that plans were meant to fall apart. I think the big issue for me was that you had so much set up to focus on protesting child protective services to no avail that it felt like the narrative hit a wall. Any semblance of horror in the series vanishes when the spookiest or most shocking scenes only arrive at the very end and the tense atmosphere is washed away by neutering the hair-raising sections. As far as the final moments go, they fall into the same trap of having Keiichi get lectured about what went wrong in the arc rather than having him be front and center of the madness. Similarly, it also was an arc that dragged out with the set-up only for the punchline to kick in 5 minutes before the last episode of the arc ended. We also got faces that looked more like the ones from the old series with Rena and Keiichi looking mortified about what ended up happening even when it seemed like everything would end in a best-case-scenario.

At long last, here it is — the final episode of Higurashi Gou. Two Happy Cats. When They Cry.
