Drago Bludvist

Courtesy DreamWorks Animation. Visually, "How to Train Your Dragon 2" does everything right. The character design is distinct and detailed — especially the dragons, which are so creatively rendered, they have their own language of movement. The northern-clime settings are exquisite forest and ice-crystal backdrops, the rippling ocean a deep blue populated with its own fantastic creatures.

Misty fog, cottony clouds and hazy sunlight create immediate and exquisite textures. The aerial swooping of boy-riding-dragon is ripe for the technology, and the wind-in-your-hair rollercoaster illusion is fun and effective. It consistently surprises your eyes. They met and bonded in the first film, in which they both lost appendages and learned that dragons and humans can coexist. Now, Hiccup indulges his desire to emulate his friend, building his own set of wings so he can leap off the saddle and hang-glide through the sky.

Director: Dean DuBlois. Run time: minutes. I kept seeing my own black cat companion in the warm yellow eyes and dark scales of Toothless, who even purrs like a feline.

That one of their soaring and majestic flights of fancy is accompanied by an annoying modern pop song is a rare creative misstep in a wonderful movie. On the ground, his burly father, Stoick Gerard Butler , expects his son to take over as chief of their humble Viking village.

Stoick has even replaced his weapons forge with a saddle factory so they can ride the skies. A physical and ideological threat looms, in the form of dreadlocked goliath Drago Djimon Hounsou and his flunkie Erat Kit Harington , who seek to control dragons rather than coexist with them. Drago is amassing a dragon army, and he and Stoick are familiars dragging around old grudges like battered, ugly luggage.

While seeking a nonviolent agreement with Drago, Hiccup encounters a strange, shamanistic woman named Valka Cate Blanchett , who rides an impressive four-winged beast. Director Dean DuBlois uses the character as a means to carefully underscore a conservationist motif without battering his audience over the head.

Many youth-oriented films lack such subtlety. One sequence features a breathtaking ballet of dragon riders riding an updraft above a canyon; another displays dragons holding fire in their mouths, which glow like coal stoves, an ingenious way of using lighting to create mood. In that sense, "How to Train Your Dragon 2" is indulgent and show-offy, and all the better for it. The story takes a few unexpected turns, exploring character relationships — between human and dragon, parent and child — and building on the first film's underdog themes.

It eventually, and predictably, leads to an epic third-act battle, albeit one rendered thrilling with the tracking shots and plunging-crane cameras of high-caliber action films.

But the movie is primarily an adventure for the eyes, and one forged with great imagination. Email him at jserba mlive. 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' review: It's Hiccup vs. tyrant

It is the second entry in the franchise and one of the best animated sequels ever. Five years have passed since the first movie and now dragons and humans live together peacefully. However, Hiccup now must face Drago Bludvist who is creating a dragon army and wants to conquer the dragons. He also meets his mother Valka.

The growing pains, starting with the decision to visibly age the animated characters, only begin with Hiccup's hip facial hair. Meanwhile, much.
