Having been through so much already, the club think they can deal with whatever Heartseed has in store, but when one of the group cracks under the strain, the after-effects might prove to be too much for the friends to overcome… This time around, the phenomenon affecting Taichi and co. Back in Volume 2, Heartseed made it so the students would act upon their innermost desires without any restraint.
In this volume, the strongest thoughts and feelings of the group are transmitted to each other. Inaba and Taichi reason that the Student Cultural Research Club members already know so much about each other and their feelings that surely this should be easy to overcome. However, unbeknownst to the others, Nagase has still been hiding her true self behind a mask and the fear of this being exposed throws her over the edge — especially when Taichi once again confesses his romantic feelings for her.
Volume 4 is the first time that someone has completely cut themselves off from the group and lashed out at those who tried to help in such a volatile manner. Usually stubbornness and perseverance from the other CRC members goes a long way, but not this time. Nagase is simply dealing with too much. This utter breakdown gives us perhaps one of the most emotionally driven stories thus far for Kokoro Connect and its pay-off is incredibly satisfying.
Everyone is always present and has a role to play, but each phenomenon tends to hit just one or two of the cast the hardest. Despite how many times Nagase has been hurt or close to breaking because of Heartseed, it never gets old for me as a reader because Anda has created such a likeable cast of characters.
The translation, as always, reads well with no sign of errors and Lee does a great job at giving everyone distinctive voices — which is especially important when the perspective shifts from character to character quite a lot! Kokoro Connect Volume 4 is available as an eBook and includes colour pages at the beginning.
Overall, Kokoro Connect continues to impress and never falters. When she's not watching anime, reading manga or reviewing, Demelza can generally be found exploring some kind of fantasy world and chasing her dreams of being a hero. Kokoro Connect Volume 6 brings the series back with a bang.
Overall the seventh volume of Kokoro Connect is one of the best yet. The stakes have never been higher as the relationships built up through the books so far are put to the ultimate test. This series continues to be one of the more engrossing, thrilling stories in the light novel market right now.
With an emotional story that could change the lives of the cast forever, this is shaping up to be a fantastic conclusion to the beloved light novel series. With everything at stake, the cast prepare to face off against The Third in one final battle — but will they succeed and come through in one piece?

Body-swapping stories have been staples of sci fi, fantasy, and horror literature for decades, whether as central themes the American movie Freaky Friday or as one-off stunts one episode of the American TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, several vignettes from the To Love-Ru franchise. When not used purely for gag value, such stories typically focus partly or entirely on the characters involved gaining greater insight into the life of the person that they body-swap with. The story arc composing the first five episodes, which adapts the first light novel in the source series, does exactly that for its middle three episodes. Through a combination of noticing normally-hidden details while in one another's bodies, confessions made to reassure each other that they can be trusted not to misbehave while in the bodies of their club mates, and Taichi's creative problem-solving efforts, the series shows us in great detail the core personalities, hang-ups, and predilections of its central cast as more minor development of a couple of side characters; the first episode reveals that the Class President for Taichi, Inori, and Inaban is secretly an aggressive lesbian, for instance. All of the key cast members have some kind of major problem that they are knowingly or unknowingly dealing with, too; one suffers from androphobia and not without good reason , another fears that she has spent so much time adapting herself to situations that she has lost sight of who she truly is, another has deep-seeded trust issues, and so forth. Revelations of a lighter note also come out, and the series is refreshingly frank about admitting things like the fact that some of its cast members not only masturbate but have other cast members in mind when they do it.

Adolescent feelings continued to smash awkwardly together in the third episode of Kokoro Connect. This one opened right after the conclusion of the second, with Taichi challenging Inaba on her decision to declare his love for Iori while possessing his body. Both Inaba and Taichi were defined in this scene, in bold, somewhat unconvincing colors. Centering your romcom on a visual novel-style woman-saver is a questionable choice at the best of times, and beyond that, this conversation felt a lot more like the audience being told character information than characters actually interacting like people. All of those roles are extremely broad ones, conflict-ready instruments made to strike against each other.

The same begins to happen to the other club members, throwing their daily lives into disarray. At first the five students find some amusement amidst the confusion, but this unwarranted connection also exposes the painful scars hidden within their hearts. As their calm lives are shattered, the relationships between the five students also begin to change. I loved the story. Here we have a series that takes a supernatural storyline, adds some well-written high-school romance and plenty of compelling drama, and pulls it all together into one amazing package. Although some of the ideas may have been done many times before, Kokoro Connect manages to make it fresh and funny, whilst also being surprisingly realistic with how it portrays the effects of each of the phenomena.
