I demand a Centurions reboot

Hey folks, Valkor here. Whenever I talk 80's cartoons with a friends, the name "Centurions" usually pops up. I think it all depends on who I talk to… or if I even remember the series at all. Regardless, I loved the cartoon and I loved the toys even more. The Centurions are a special team that utilizes suits called "exo-frames" that allows the team to be transported anywhere on the planet Earth. Not only can the team be teleported anywhere but each member can have weaponry teleported to them that matches their capabilities starting with their leader Max Ray Sea Commander , followed by Jack Rockwell Land Specialist , and Ace McCloud Air Operations Expert.

The team's main base of operations is a satellite that orbits earth called "Sky Vault" where Crystal along with her sidekick Orangutan named "Lucy" acts as Transporter, sending the team along with their equipment to wherever they're needed.

And we can't forget the catchphrase whenever they fuse with their weapons — Power Xtreme!! The Centurions protect the earth from the evil Cyborg Doc Terror, his assistant Hacker, and an endless supply of robot henchmen know as "Doom Drones".

You'll also meet Terror's daughter in one ep and additional characters show up later in the series. This single disc DVD runs 5 episodes long, with no additional extras. So, how about an episode rundown? The Sky is on Fire - Doc Terror has unleashed a plethora of missiles into the Earth's atmosphere causing the planet to heat up.

On top of that he's stolen a newly designed cryogenic ray, which could potentially save the earth. The Centurions have to retrieve the ray before life on earth is turned to ash. Battle Beneath the Sea - Tired of being thwarted by the Centurions at every turn, Doc Terror decides to go after the underwater Sealab where the Centurion's weapons are made, using a new weapon called Mako. The Centurions retake the lab but not before Mako calls on Terror's biggest surprise — a giant Cyber-Squid.

An Alien Affair - The Centurions investigate a comet that's been sending out a mysterious signal. Upon closer inspection, the comet is shown to be hollow inside, but further investigation shows a feline creature with the ability to suck energy lurking about.

Attempting to escape the beast, the team teleport out to Sky Vault, however the monster has hitched a ride with an appetite for destruction… and energy. There Terror finds a cave that leads to a lost world filled with Dinosaurs, which he'd like to turn into evil cyborgs. The team finds Doc's location and attempt to thwart his plot, but now they have to contend with a lizard race also under Terror's control. Sand Doom — When a convoy goes missing in the desert, the team go to investigate.

They soon learn that General Amid is in cahoots with Doc Terror and also on their side — a giant Cyborg worm! The Centurions series went on for 60 full episodes, plus a line-up of toys and a comic book. I actually enjoyed the toys more than I did watching the series because of the ability to swap weapons with the different characters. And how does it feel retreading on past cartoons?

Find out in the TOV Breakdown. The Good: The disc is only 5 episodes deep, but still a lot of fun to watch with plenty of action. Sure the animation is a bit sluggish, but it's a product of its time and wasn't really meant for today's youth who are used to having their animation fast-paced.

But give it a try, you might find something worth watching. The mini-series has been given a nice remaster, taken from the show's original negatives, the colors are sharp and oh so bright, making it look brand new. Audio sounds great with crystal clear vocals and sound effects. The Centurions is definitely one of the best series of the 80's and it still holds up well even today.

The Bad: Just like the Challenge of the Gobots , The Centurions disc is based on the first few episodes of the series. But unlike the Gobot's disc, each episode of The Centurions is stand alone not origin, so Warner could have added an extra episode or two to fill things out. Valkor Out!

This is just a little fun to tide you over till the next issue. Luckily, I had a Christmas adventure from last December that was only sorta Christmas-themed, which makes it perfect for the weirdly-timed Christmas-in-July. I took this adventure from the Holiday Wish Book supplement. I highly encourage you to check these out.

Every episode of The Centurions: Power Xtreme ever, ranked from best to Centurions must figure out a way of destroying Terror's vortex before all of.

With a tagline like that, how could anyone forget the Centurions? And yet this high concept animated series has largely disappeared from geek discourse. It happens when there still hasn't been a Centurions revival after three decades! Like almost every other animated series from the '80s, Centurions: Power Xtreme was designed to sell toys. Iron Man may have predated the show by two decades, but Centurions updated the concept of using high-tech armor in battle.

The Centurions was an animated cartoon that began as a five-part mini series in and was soon followed up with a full 60 episode season. However, The Centurions toys were not massively popular and the second wave of toys were cancelled.

The Centurions

The cartoon and its toy series have been largely forgotten by all but the most committed of its fans, and according to a quick search of Amazon appears to never have been released on VHS during its heyday, making the December release not only the first DVD, but the first time any of the show's episodes have made it to the home video market at all. The point of the Warner Archive is to release films which may not have enough of an audience to support a large print run and a broad release, but which fans and cinemaphiles have requested enough times for Warner to feel making them available is a good idea. Like they have done in the past with TV shows, The Centurions is not the full series which ran for another sixty episodes in the late '80s but rather the original miniseries that ran in as a test balloon for the briefly popular kids' show and toy line. Like the original plan for the series--which had this mini launched to see whether a longer format show could be plausible--it's possible that a strong performance at the Warner Archive level could lead to more releases of additional episodes down the line. That's the way the Warner Archive describes the series, which in addition to Kane and Kirby also featured comics icon Gerry Conway as a writer although that was after this initial story was finished.

Nostalgia works on a bit of a sliding scale; not all properties are created equal. Centurions is one such example, a Sunrise -animated Ruby-Spears relic from that very much exemplified the era of the 30 minute toy commercial.

Centurions is a heavily Merchandise-Driven Episode Cartoon series, produced by Ruby-Spears note and animated by an uncredited Sunrise , who established their Studio 7 branch of s-CRY-ed and the Brave Series meta series with this show in and based on a Kenner action figure line. It follows the adventures of three later five technological Superheroes who fight against evil using Assault Weapon Systems. Their uniforms, actually cybernetic Exo-Frames, had a number of hardpoints on the surface, to which the various parts of their weapon systems would attach after having been beamed in from the orbiting space station, Skyvault. Rex and John were introduced late in the series; they were intended as additions to the mostly unproduced second year of the toy line. Almost invariably, the team's opponents would be Mad Scientist Doc Terror and his dull-witted assistant Hacker , two extremely ugly cyborgs bent on world domination. Reasonably notable for being one of Cartoon Network 's early staples when they were just starting; it aired soon after school let out, leading to a fair few grade schoolers watching it in the mids and the show getting a minor return to fame, although not enough to lead to being Un-Cancelled. Centurions has also played on Cartoon Network's sister network Boomerang.

Thank you for enlightening, and, most importantly, just in time. Just think, five years already in the internet, but this is the first time I've heard about it.
