Help me give my students a library they love filled with the best and most popular manga out there! I teach in an urban school district where many of the students live in low income neighborhoods. A large portion of them are English Language Learners. When they walk into my class, many of their minds are burdened with thoughts about how they can help pay the rent at home and how they'll balance taking care of their younger sibling tonight with their own homework.
I hope they learn many things in classroom. But I also hope that at the end of the year, they felt that this room was safe and comforting at a moment in their lives when so few places are. I have worked really hard to build a robust, diverse classroom library. It has taken years to build up, and I like to think it has a little bit of everything Let me tell you: students from every period in every year have always flocked to those manga paperbacks. And I don't mind it! I know there are teachers out there who don't like their students reading manga, but I've read enough of them and seen enough anime to know that these comics contain rich characters and complex plots that rival any novel from your Western YA section.
When you use a text book, short story, poem that kids aren't enthusiastic about to teach a complicated concept, you're suddenly fighting two battles at once. A fully-formed manga section in my library will allow me to teach those complicated concepts with books the students want to read. People learn best when they're practicing in a safe environment with familiar tools; nobody's first rehearsal is at Carnegie Hall. Why should it be any different with English?
