Suisei no Gargantia – 13 (END)
Before this spring season of anime began, mecha anime fans were cheering and rejoicing over the fact that there was to be, not only one mecha anime streaming, but three.
The first Majestic Prince, which I have already written about in a previous article here , has proven to be a fairly enjoyable show with its own traits and nuances. The second show, Valvrave, is a near to complete mess of a series that can be summed up with the phrase: Space Vampire Mecha. It is enjoyable only from the perspective of someone who knows that it is terrible. As we come to the conclusion of the show though, it is apparent that this hope was for naught.
From the very start of Gargantia, the audience is introduced to the interstellar conflict between the Hideauze and the Galactic Alliance. Just as quickly as we are introduced to this, the setting immediately swaps over to an Earth whose surface is covered in water and the fleet of inter-connected ships called Gargantia. Here, the true plot of the show appears to take off as the main character Ledo is forced to adjust to a new life on Earth.
Ledo must leave behind his life as a soldier and find his place within this more post apocalyptic society. This is where Gargantia does manage to shine. Were Ledo, you were a soldier.
From a personal perspective, I would argue that this terrible plot development stems from the fact that Gargantia has been written by a multitude of authors. While Urubuchi may have created the overall plot for Gargantia, each associate author appears to have taken their own small ideas about its direction, and pushed it that way. The overarching Galactic Alliance — Hideauze conflict is a good example of this.
This creates a confused air within the anime. Just as the plot is essentially a disjointed mess with no true direction, so too are the characters within Gargantia. After watching Ledo grow into what could be considered a nice and decent human being, he immediately takes ten steps backwards when he leaves Gargantia to go and fight the Hideauze.
When watching Ledo struggle to reconcile his feelings for the both the Hideauze and the Galactic Alliance, it appears artificial. Ledo, the boy who just a few episodes before was enjoying his new life on Gargantia with his friends, now cannot even understand what makes something human. Yep, Aliens. Not only looking at our main character Ledo, there are also numerous other characters within the series are lacking in depth or development. After being with her and Ledo for those eight to nine episodes, when Ledo leaves her, so does the audience.
After the build-up that had been growing between the two, it is cut off and left broken apart. Though this is a common enough trope within anime, the hero being forced to abandon his love interest, within Gargantia it merely creates a situation where the audience almost forgets Amy exists. Her character having grown so very little throughout the anime up to that point, immediately becomes irrelevant as Ledo leaves her behind. This relevance is why in the upcoming episode, her reunion with Ledo is going to be less than interesting or even romantic.
Ledo was forced from his simple life as a soldier into the more complicated life of having to find a job or role within Gargantia.
As the show progressed, this moral or theme began to slowly dissipate. Moving away from the personal growth of Ledo, the show instead decided to bring out a more political theme. The political ideals of the Galactic Alliance are polar opposite to those of the Gargantia, with the Alliance being more communistic and Gargantia being more capitalistic.
This juxtaposition between the two political ideals appeared to take a strong point within the plot during the last few episodes, and over shadowed the previous theme of personal growth that had been building within Gargantia for most of the show.
Thanks Mr. Robot for the sociology lesson. But in the end I do not see this happening. Good review. But I disagree to an extent about your thoughts on the development of the story.
To me, the first few episodes before Ledo leaves were just to get him attached to Amy and the Gargantia, to show him a new and happy life. He leaves because of that attachment to Amy and the Gargantia. His development from his time on Gargantia then leads him to his reaction when he learned the truth. I very liked the conflict between the evolvers and the galactic alliance because it showed two civilizations that had lost what makes them human.
I liked each of the plots individually in and of themselves. The conflict between the Galactic Alliance and the evolvers is an interesting side story, but within this show, it just did not seem to fit. I think that the show had a ton of interesting ideas within it, but they all became so mixed up within each other that in the end, none of it really mattered.
I agree with most of your views. The story is all over the place and to top it off is that the characters are bland at best. None of them really deliver an engaging personal narrative. When the most memorable character is the AI, you know you have a problem with your series.
I can only imagine how pretty that BD version will be. Definitely, one of the highlights of the show was how amazing it looked.

Suisei no Gargantia – Episode 10 – The Despair Continues…
I like Suisei no Gargantia. I like it a lot. In my opinion, the anime takes a very creative approach to exploring topics regarding humanity, warfare, coexistence, societal structure, morality, and scientific expansion. All this is wrapped in a rather unique variation of the classic post-apocalyptic world and is told through a variety of characters representing just about every major viewpoint on the topics above. Of course, I recognize that Suisei no Gargantia is not the greatest show.

Quick Synopsis: The story begins in the distant future in the far reaches of the galaxy. Waking from his artificially induced hibernation, Ledo realizes that he has arrived on Earth, the planet on the lost frontier. Ledo arrives on one of the fleets called Gargantia. To Ledo, who has lived a life where he knows nothing but fighting, these days of peace continue to surprise him. Personal Thoughts. This is written by famous Gen Urobuchi, so I personally have high expectation from this anime. Which indeed it had. The world of Gargantia as they portray is so reach in detail and well developed throughout the whole anime, I will explain that in details later. At first you would expect this to be the old fashion mecha fighting theme anime. In fact, it might be a mecha theme anime but it feel heart warming because there are some slice of life in it.
Is there romance in suisei no gargantia?
I originally came into this post with a whole host of things to say, but nope. Moving on though, another big thing this episode was just how things have changed since Flange and the other ship captains left the Gargantia. Again, it was a necessary separation, but it was one that made both sides weaker for it at least, from a military point of view. That and the fact their communications attempts just might help solve that too.

In the distant future, the Earth had undergone a dramatic and extremely devastating change in its overall planetary climate, due to the Sun's abnormal activity. As a result, the entire Earth suffered a planet-wide Ice Age, forcing mankind to make a decision; either remain and freeze, or leave the planet to seek a new home among the stars. Apparently, the bulk of the human race chose the latter, though there were some survivors who did not wish to abandon the planet. This would eventually cause the humans to splinter into three sub-species; one Earth-bound and those who would eventually form the Galactic Alliance of Humankind and the Hideauze. Throughout the centuries, the existence of the Earth would eventually be a long-forgotten memory to the people of the Galactic Alliance and seen as only a myth.

When he awakens, he discovers that he and Chamber have been "salvaged" by a rag-tag band of "primitive" human scavengers aboard the Gargantia , a massive fleet of ships on an ocean-covered planet. Chamber tells him that local star charts reveal the planet is Earth, the birthplace of humanity, a place that members of the Galactic Alliance were only familiar with from stories and believed was a myth. Ledo must adjust to the language, culture and lifestyle of the planet, while finding his new purpose in life aboard the Gargantia. Highly advanced mech used by the Galactic Alliance of Humankind which was established when the humans in space joined forces against its common enemy, the Hideauze.

In the far future, humanity has conquered the stars under the banner of the Galactic Alliance of Humankind and its capital, a gigantic space colony called Avalon. But an obstacle has appeared in mankind's road to the future: a war with a race of Starfish Aliens known as Hideauze, which the Alliance is losing.
