Gay animated movie characters

But the most remarkable thing about queer readings of the film may be how unremarkable they really are. Through both its corporate practices and the content of its films, Disney for decades has implemented the so-called "gay agenda"—which is to say, helping make the world a more accepting place. This marks the Disney protagonist as odd, unusual, queer. Even classic Disney films featured these archetypes. It was impossible for Ariel to be with Eric unless she became human, or for Belle to be with the Beast unless he became human, or for Aladdin to be with Jasmine unless he became a prince, or for Pocahontas to be with John Smith unless she left her people. In the seminal Gender Trouble, Judith Butler pointed out how gender was in part performance-based, a fact that Disney has often depicted with cross-dressing and gender subversion.

Best LGBTQ+ shows and movies to watch on Disney Plus

Directed by Dan Scanlon, the Pixar production that opened this past weekend is set in a fantasy world where magic has become obsolete. Its residents include elves, fairies, centaurs, manticores and at least one queer cyclops.

Specter is the first character in any animated Disney film to openly acknowledge being queer in a line of dialogue. It was a poor consolation prize. Although the studio has moved away from queer-coding its villains, LGBTQ characters are often visible only to fans with keen eyes.

At a time when audiences are seeing increasingly meaningful queer representation in family-friendly TV shows, the tiny moments in Disney films are especially exasperating because they almost appear to be erasable by design.

And sometimes — when the films hit international markets — they do just get erased. Meaningful queer representation is important because seeing our lives and realities reflected in television affects how we see ourselves. Through the everyday adventures of a half-magical alien boy and his growing group of friends, Rebecca Sugar wants to make sure everybody feels seen.

Some upcoming Disney titles suggest that at least one arm of the studio is moving in a more inclusive direction. The married couple will even reportedly share a kiss in the film. Hopefully, another animated LGBTQ Disney character will not be far behind — and maybe this time be in more than one scene.

Disney faced a wave of backlash after donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to backers of the "Don't Say Gay" bill in Florida, a state where the company dominates in political power. Notably, much of that backlash came from within the company itself: employees held a walkout and organized open letters to CEO Bob Chapek, and many prominent staffers have been vocal on social media - fundraising for LGBTQ-supporting charities. On the one hand, these characters are so groundbreaking, they stir up lots of headlines and controversy, yet they seem pretty minor considering it's hard to name a single one. The complicated relationship between Disney and the LGBTQ community goes back — from Chinese censorship boards, to queer-coded lions, to the political showdown happening right now in the Florida state senate. To recall the first gay character in a kids' movie or the first children's cartoon to feature a queer wedding doesn't require looking back very far. For decades, these potentially groundbreaking scenes never aired. They'd be conceptualized and carefully crafted by writers and producers, but then networks would invariably push back. They'd cite age-appropriateness as a reason to scrap whole storylines, character arcs, or even ancillary references to gay culture.
