Malayalam Cartoons I occasionally read Malayalam children's magazines and cartoon books just for the feel of it. I sometimes hope that reading those books would take me to a different world for a short while and make me forget about everything concerning Today. I read the recent issue of Bobanum Moliyum cartoon magazine issue No.
The cartoons are mostly forgettable and many of them are vulgar, to say the least. They have inserted some of the old cartoons under the title 48 Varshangalkku Munpu , which is the only relief. For the new cartoons, I suspect that they are having a kind of collage with drawings from old episodes, with only the dialogues being changed.
I don't know what is the technology used for "cut and paste" of drawings, but it is very primitive. The alignments are wrong in many pictures.
I remember reading the Bobanum Moliyum cartoons long back on the last pages of Malayala Manorama weekly. They were mainly dealing with political or social issues and I was not very much interested in reading them.
In or 87, Toms the author started publishing the collected old cartoons as separate books. It was only then that I became a fan of these cartoons. I found out that Bobanum Moliyum had started coming from the s. The initial few hundred episodes that came in the first five or six volumes in the collector's editions were real entertainment.
There was not much of political criticism in them and most of them were about various adventures of Boban and Moly which I found to be very interesting.
I think it was only in the late s that the tone of the cartoon changed. Later, Boban and Moly went into background and focus was changed to the new character Asan, I think is his name that was introduced, who was a typical spectator and "representative of common people" that comes in many of the pocket cartoons in news papers.
Rajuvum Leelayum was a similar cartoon that came in Manorajyam again, in the last pages of the weekly. Some of the characters of Bobanum Moliyum Uppayi Mapla, for e. Probably the best among all such cartoons was Pachuvum Kovalanum by Manthri that also used to come in Manorajyam.
It was a half page cartoon. I don't think it was as popular as the other cartoons. But I feel it had the best characterization among all, and Manthri maintained it's quality until the last episode. The political satire cartoon, Sakshi by PV Krishnan that was published in the last pages of Kumkumam weekly was in a different class. There were minimum drawings and only few words in his cartoons, but they were highly effective.
It is about the orphan boy Kuttan, starting his career as a newspaper boy, and growing to a stern, brave press reporter. Unlike all other cartoons mentioned here, it was a serial with a continuous story, and probably the first of it's kind among Malayalam cartoons. For some reason, I think it was discontinued after some time. My father had collected some 60 odd pages of the cartoon. I still read them once in a while and find it very interesting. Film Director Aravindan's cartoon strips, Cheriya Manushyanum Valiya Lokavum are very famous, but till now I never had a chance to see any of them.
I think these cartoons were published before I was born. Even though they were later collected as a book by DC Books, I think , it was too expensive to buy.
There are many other cartoons that are worth mentioning. Yesudasan's cartoons on Vanitha women's magazine was probably the only thing worth reading in it. Mrigadhipathyam Vannal cartoons drawn by Venu were based on ideas sent by different people, so they remained mostly fresh I don't know whether they are still coming in Balarama.
Many of these cartoons, about happenings in an "animal world", were very imaginative. To come back to Bobanum Moliyum , I think it is time to stop publishing this cartoon if they don't have any more good ideas. It is good to stop singing when the voice is good. I have the same opinion about the Munshi cartoon video of Asianet television channel. The toothless communist politician who gives cynical remarks about any issue and his loud laugh have become irritating and intolerable for me and I change the channel whenever I hear the title music of this cartoon.
