Walt Disney's Classic 'Skeleton Dance' Is Sure To Get You In The Halloween Spirit

Video editor Adam Maciaszek has fantastically remastered the iconic animated short into a 4K high definition version of the original. Maciaszek used artificial intelligence to smooth out the choppiness and refine the resolution.

He also suggests watching the remastered version at 2x speed. This a remaster performed by human aided ai algorithms to not only upscale the resolution clear up detail and remove the intense flicker in the original classic.

I loved this and since today is Halloween, I thought it would be the perfect day to share it! I hope you enjoy! This is not only an amazing animated theatrical short but also was Walt Disney Productions first short for their Silly Symphony series. This was two years after Walt and Roy Disney along with equally legendary animation Ub Iwerks created and then eventually lost Oswald the Lucky Rabbit — which as you well know led them to coming up with the one and only Mickey Mouse. This idea is what eventually led to the creation of the Silly Symphony series — that first short based off an advertisement that Carl Stalling saw when he was a young boy. It certainly seems that memory from the young Stalling paid off when The Skeleton Dance was released on the big screen. The short was shown in June of at the Carthay Circle Theater The first cartoon ever shown there! Although reading that article from the Disney Family Museum makes it sound like that was no easy task to bring about. As for the story presented in The Skeleton Dance it is what is advertised on the tin — as a group of skeletons arise from their graves to be merry and dance after the clock has struck midnight at the church.

Silly Symphonies, 1929–1935

Stalling suggested an idea for a cartoon combining music with action: animation as choreography. This new alloy would be called Silly Symphonies. Like most movie accompanists, Stalling borrowed snatches of popular tunes, classical melodies, and folk songs to match the emotional cues of the films he scored daily. In , when Disney was struggling to finish Steamboat Willie as a talkie, he tapped Stalling to score the film.

New Mickey Skeleton Bones Attire Spotted Today!

I'm still in the Halloween mood and almost every Halloween, the Walt Disney Company seems to showcase one of its earliest black-and-white cartoons, The Skeleton Dance , the very first Silly Symphony. While not specifically stated to be Halloween, merely a supernatural frolic during the midnight hour, this five-and-a-half minute innovative short cartoon certainly encapsulates the imagery and spirit of the spooky holiday. The cartoon starts with flashes of lightning and a close-up of an owl's eyes with a full moon in the background. The owl hoots in time with the music while the wind causes a branch, shaped like skeletal bones of a hand, to reach out to grab the bird. The clock strikes 12 and bats come flying from the belfry of the nearby church in the background.

The Legacy of The Skeleton Dance: Silly Symphonies

As the organist at the Isis Theatre in Kansas City, Stalling proposed the idea of a series of animated novelties centered around music. He pitched the idea of dancing skeletons, based on an ad he recalled as a young child, featuring these spooky sorts. Ub Iwerks began animating in January of , completing a majority of the work along with assistance from Les Clark and Wilfred Jackson. Working in the vaudevillian style of eccentric movement, further popularized by leading silent film comedians Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and others, a quartet of skeletons comedically danced around a graveyard with bone-chilling antics perfectly timed to Stalling's score infused with Edvard Grieg's "March of the Dwarfs. Each division within the studio was called upon to rise to the demand required for this new approach to the medium! As animation was completed, one woman — the remarkable Mary Tebb — singlehandedly matched Iwerks' pencil animation with an ink pen and paintbrush, by inking and painting each grinning ghoul over thousands of cels.

Silly Symphony – The Skeleton Dance

Suspended Animation Almost every Halloween, the Walt Disney Company seems to showcase one of its earliest black-and-white cartoons, The Skeleton Dance , the very first Silly Symphony. While not specifically stated to be Halloween, merely a supernatural frolic during the midnight hour, this five-and-a-half minute innovative short cartoon certainly encapsulates the imagery and spirit of the spooky holiday. Walt agreed to do a second series of cartoons because it would allow him to do some experimentation, not be restricted by the formula of the Mickey cartoons and generate an additional stream of revenue.

The Skeleton Dance Story

When it came to making the Land of the Dead skeletons for the upcoming Disney film Coco , Pixar had a unique challenge on its hands. Since so much of animation is about ooey-gooey humans, how do you build characters stripped of their flesh, muscle, and organs without terrifying an audience of kids? By making two little exceptions to the rule. Unkrich also said they also made the eye sockets move and stretch to simulate eyebrows, something Pixar previously did in Finding Nemo with many of the fish characters, in order to make them more Disney-like. But apart from that, the design team tried to stay true to how skeletons actually look and feel. But they did have to find ways to set the skeletons apart from one another, while still keeping them looking natural, which was a challenge in and of itself. Supervising animator Gini Santos said they did this in two ways: by subtly altering the coloring and cracking of bones between characters to create variety, and giving them unique movement styles that would set each of them apart.
