Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. When Disney learned Universal was poaching his animation staff, he walked away from his creation determined to create a character he would own. At first, Disney wanted to call him Mortimer, but his wife, Lillian, talked him into changing that to Mickey. Inspired by that, Disney and Iwerks made their third Mickey Mouse short a musical piece starring Mickey as a riverboat pilot who finds ever-inventive ways to keep a tune in motion.

The result was a huge hit for Disney, who put his animators to work outfitting the two previous, unreleased silent Mickey Mouse shorts for sound for wide release in theaters.

Hot dogs! Walt Disney himself would take over voicing Mickey. Mickey Mouse dolls and toys appeared on shelves. A Mickey Mouse comic strip debuted in newspapers on Jan. Comic books soon followed. The Ingersoll-Waterbury clock company would say that its Mickey Mouse watches had saved the company from bankruptcy. The Daily Mail reports that Disney initially had a copyright that was protected for 56 years. The company supported the Copyright Act of , which extended protections to 75 years; in , they agitated for a further extension and got it. Mickey has been famous since and his appearance in the animated film, Steamboat Willie. Once copyright expires, however, anyone can use the character without asking permission or paying any charges. Disney is well-known for the legal ferocity with which it protects its symbols, having once threatened to sue three daycare centres in Florida for unauthorized use of their animated characters. And they sued the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in for a song and dance routine at the Oscars that year that featured a Snow White character. If copyright goes on Mickey Mouse, he could then become like Winnie the Pooh — fair game for all.

I never really noticed when watching Mickey cartoons, since the animation tends to be fast, fluid and full of detail. The subtle oddness becomes painfully obvious once Mickey is 3-D animated. They stay the same size and shape, all but killing the 3-D illusion. It seems a bit sinister at first, the way Disney ensures that the Mickey logo is visible no matter which way the character turns, but it also appears to have been going on since the beginning. Mickey looked a lot different than he does now, but his strange gyroscopic ears were the same. Ah, darn it! I can never watch Mickey again! You are absolutely right, and I never noticed it before!

The extraordinary cuddly toy, which is thought to date back to the s, was discovered in a container destined for the tip. The business, which dated back as far as the s, was the first manufacturer to make the Disney character in the UK in the s but sadly fell into administration in I hope that the publicity he creates will encourage people to think carefully before they throw things away. I am delighted that he will be viewed by generations to come in his new home. It is not every day you find something as special as Mickey, but you would be amazed at what great things get saved that would have simply been thrown away. We hope that Mickey can go to a professional conservator in the near future, to be cleaned and structurally supported before going on display as part of a small exhibition about the toy manufacturer.

You know his name. The iconic Disney mascot has been the face of the company for years. The lovable little mouse and his friends, including best friends Goofy and Donald and his girlfriend Minnie, have been the subject of several films, shows, comics, games and more. Their faces adorn nearly every inch of the Disney theme parks around the world, and every Disney store has merchandise with that smiling grin and big round ears looking back at you. Yes everyone knows and loves the Mouse who built the House Disney lives in, but what if that goofy laugh of his hid a dark past. No one likes to see their childhood with a tinge of darkness in it. I am a huge Disney fan and a Mickey Mouse fan in particular. Yet there are things in Mickey's past that we had no clue ever existed, and a lot of you guys will be shocked when you read it.
