Season 1 of Kuroko's Basketball has 26 episodes. Coach Aida makes the first-years pass another "entrance exam" and sets up a practice match with Kaijo High and its former "Miracles" star Ryota Kise.
The practice match gets off to a bad start when the Seirin players realize that Kaijo's team is not playing to its full potential. Kaijo takes the lead early on in the practice match, but Kuroko and Kagami working together has the potential to turn the game in Seirin's favor.
After the match, the Seirin squad celebrates at a steak house. Kise asks Kuroko about the reasons for his checkered middle school basketball career.
Seirin is in the lead over Shinkyo at the end of the first quarter, but with Kuroko benched to save his strength, Kagami has to face Papa alone. Seirin faces off against Seiho High and their star player, Tomoki Tsugawa. Kise consults a horoscope that predicts disaster for Kuroko. Seiho's reputation for defense proves deserved, and Seirin's match against them turns into a slog. With the game on the line, it's up to the seniors. Seirin's game against Seiho goes down to the final buzzer.
Immediately after that, Seirin faces the formidable Shutoku team. The "Miracles" alum Midorima is on the Shutoku squad, and Seirin's path to victory means that someone has to shut him down: It won't be easy. Shutoku is still in the lead over Seirin at the half, with Kagami growing increasingly desperate to block Midorima's famously accurate shots. At the start of the fourth quarter, Seirin works to put Kuroko's plan into action, but Kagami is running low on energy and the clock is ticking.
Stopping at a restaurant on the way home from the game, Kagami receives a warning from Midorima about another "Miracles" player, Daiki Aomine. In the lead-up to Seirin's match against To'o in the Inter High Championship, Kagami is barred from practice, while Aomine plays hooky. Aomine is nowhere to be seen, but the information that To'o manager Momoi obtained about Seirin's players puts To'o in the lead immediately.
Aomine arrives just before the half and goes one-on-one against Kagami. During halftime, Kuroko asks to stay in for the third quarter. Seirin's defense is no match for Aomine's famous streetball skills, even with Kuroko subbed back into play: Aomine can intercept his "Ignite Pass. Now, the Winter Cup is their last chance.
Seirin's former ace, Teppei Kiyoshi, returns from the hospital and challenges Kagami to a one-on-one match to see who will be starting power forward. With an eye to the Winter Cup, Riko takes the Seirin team to the beach for a summer training camp to build their strength on the sand. Seirin plays three practice matches against Shutoku without Kagami and loses them all. Midorima challenges Kagami to a one-on-one contest. Kise has an inspiring flashback to the moment he first came across the sport of basketball, then the tense match between To'o and Kaijo begins.
After the end of the training camp, the Seirin squad goes to watch To'o play Kaijo in the quarterfinal of the Inter High, pitting Kise against Aomine. To'o keeps up the pressure on Kaijo, leading Kise to try an unorthodox and time-consuming strategy against Aomine while To'o racks up points. Aomine and Kise go head-to-head in the fourth quarter, giving it their all.
Watching, Kuroko and Kagami vow to develop their own style of basketball. Season 2 of Kuroko's Basketball has 26 episodes. The Seirin squad take a break from their practice regimen to play in a street ball tournament, where an old friend of Kagami's reappears unexpectedly. Atsushi Murasakibara, of the "Generation of Miracles," shows up at the street ball tournament, and Kagami goads him into playing against them.
The preliminaries for the Winter Cup are finally starting, and Seirin faces off against Josei High School and their star Narumi in their first game. Seirin advances in the tournament along with three other teams, one of which is their old rival Shutoku.
Another, Kirisaki Dai'ichi, plays dirty. Seirin's rematch against Shutoku continues, with Midorima showing off his new skills against Kagami and Kiyoshi, who can barely keep up with him.
Kuroko subs back in with one minute left in the third quarter, showing off his new "Vanishing Drive. Seirin and Shutoku vow a rematch at the Winter Cup, while a conversation between Kiyoshi and Hyuga prompts Hyuga to tell Seirin's origin story. Seirin's past with Kirisaki Dai'ichi, under Hyuga's leadership as captain and Riko's care as coach, is revealed, as is Hanamiya's dirty trick. Seirin faces off against Kirisaki Dai'ichi in the Winter Cup preliminaries' final game. The first-years are determined to avenge their past loss.
Seirin has the lead, but with Hanamiya and the rest of Kirisaki Dai'ichi playing dirty ball, the third quarter turns into an all-out battle. A bruising fourth quarter forces Seirin's players to look deep within for their strength starting with Hyuga, but as a team they're stronger together.
With the Winter Cup advancement decided, the Seirin team heads to a hot springs resort. There, they meet their future opponents, the To'o squad. Kagami heads back to America to train apart from his teammates, and Seirin's training camp coach, Riko's father, says he can't teach Kuroko anything. After a timeout, Kagami goes head to head with Aomine: He finds that he can finally grasp Aomine's style of play, shocking all the spectators.
To'o uses Momoi's intelligence to shut down Seirin's offense, with Imayoshi covering Kuroko. But Seirin has a new strategy up its sleeve. Aomine starts practicing with his new friend Tetsuya Kuroki, a player who's passionate about basketball, but not very skilled.
With Seirin still down by 10 in the fourth quarter, Hyuga suggests going all out for three-pointers, but Aomine has reached another level of play. Kagami battles Aomine in the zone, but with Seirin's players exhausted, he somehow has to score enough points to win in regulation and avoid overtime.
After the To'o game, Seirin's players relax at Kagami's house. Seirin faces off against Nakamiya South in the next round of the Winter Cup, while their rival teams face off against other contenders. Seirin is in trouble in the third quarter, with Kagami unable to play at his best against Himuro and Kiyoshi blocked by Murasakibara at the post.
Seirin are staring down the barrel of defeat: Murasakibara is overwhelming on the offense, and his dunk known as "Thor's Hammer" is unstoppable. Seirin continues to battle against Yosen in the fourth quarter, but they're struggling, and the watching Kaijo players are taunting them, led by Kise.
With the timeout over, Seirin are down to their last chance to stop Yosen, Murasakibara and Himuro in a battle that's going down to the wire. Season 3 of Kuroko's Basketball has 26 episodes.
Tensions are running high after Seirin advances into the semifinals of the Winter Cup, with Kagami nearly getting into a fight with a rival player.
Kaijo and Fukuda Sogo square off in the semifinal for the right to face Seirin, with Kise and Haizaki immediately resuming their grudge match. Haizaki and his team have Kaijo on the ropes, with Kise's injury paining him and Haizaki able to adopt any move he sees.
But Kise refuses to give up. Just four teams are left in contention for the Winter Cup, but on the day of the semifinal match, Kuroko and Kagami both realize they need new shoes. Akashi's ability to predict his opponents' maneuvers is unmatched, and the Shutoku team seem to be on the ropes. But they're not about to give up. It's time for Kaijo to face off against Seirin. Meanwhile, Akashi refuses to shake hands with Midorima after the game so they can remain enemies.
The match with Kaijo gets off to a rocky start for Seirin as Kise's "Perfect Copy" ability thwarts their offense. Riko calls for a substitution. Kagami and Kise's ace showdown is thwarted when Kise is subbed out due to his foot injury, leaving Kuroko a gap to use his "Phantom Shot.
Without their ace, the Kaijo team is no match for Kagami, allowing Seirin to open up a huge lead. On the bench, Kise is increasingly frustrated. With Kise back in the game, Kaijo starts to close the gap, and the spectators' response puts Seirin under pressure like they've never felt before.
With Kaijo up by one, Seirin only has one chance left to win. Kise, however, is determined to give it his all in his final attack. Kuroko relives his past at Teiko Middle School with the "Generation of Miracles" for the Seirin team the night before the final against Rakuzan. At Teiko, Kuroko finally joins the first string of the basketball team, and he mentors new recruit Kise.
Meanwhile, Akashi becomes captain. Teiko wins the national tournament for the second year in a row, but as the players level up in their skills, their team spirit fragments. Kuroko is on the injured list for the grand final, in which Teiko is playing his friend Shige's team. He asks Akashi to make Teiko play their best. The final day of the Winter Cup arrives: The Seirin squad prepare for the game as players gather for the third place game and the final.
Rakuzan confronts Seirin and immediately turns up the pressure. Riko benches Kuroko to save Kagami's stamina, but Akashi marks Kagami. Rakuzan reveals their own "phantom sixth man," Mayuzumi, who's just as good at misdirection as Kuroko and better at making shots on his own. Kuroko is still sidelined at the start of the third quarter, with Seirin's hopes resting on Kagami and Hyuga.
But Akashi has Hyuga in his sights. Kuroko is back in the game and he's able to stop Mayuzumi, but even with Kagami in the zone, Seirin has to defeat the Uncrowned Kings to win.

Tetsuya Kuroko is a high school basketball prodigy from the Generation of Miracles, a team of six high school basketball players who each possess their own unique basketball ability. Haikyuu is a show I have loved since I watch it and will always be an anime that I recommend to friends, as I think it perfectly encapsulates what a great sports anime can be. The characters are generally likable and make the show fun to watch; the two main characters are foils of each other, which creates some funny moments and banter between the two characters, but are also highly in sync with each other while playing, which creates a duo who is fun to watch and makes the action much more interesting. Haikyuu also does a great job of this with their two main characters and have very similar dynamics, but with the personalities of each character reversed. The characters perform plays that are almost-superhero-like and tend to be animated in a way that shows just how powerful these high schoolers are. In Haikyuu, the viewer is shown clearly who the antagonists are as well, but in the form of flashbacks and reference to backstory. Both shows do this very well. While this does make the show much more action-packed, it creates a larger disconnect between the characters and the viewer, this is also true of the design of the characters; They are all extremely fit, with big muscles, broad shoulders, and adult-like features, when in reality they are high-school students, this makes it much harder to relate to the characters and see them as high-schoolers at all.
