This cute, if unassuming and forgettable little film after a story by Sinclair Lewis tells about Bongo the circus bear, who breaks free from the circus, falls in love with a cute female bear called Lulubelle, and combats a large brutal bear called Lumpjack. Immediately after this story has ended, we follow Jiminy Cricket to a live action setting: a private party with a little girl Luana Patton , Edgar Bergen and his two ventriloquist sidekicks, the cynical Charlie and the dumb, but gentle Mortimer. The Disney version of the classic Jack and the Beanstalk tale. In this version the farmers Mickey, Goofy and Donald live in Happy Valley where the happiness is spread by a magic harp. The harp is kidnapped and all happiness disappears. Mickey gets some magic beans which take them to a giant's land.
They discover the giant kidnapped the harp so they free her and restore her to her castle. Not as good as the original story and a bit too romanticized. Essentially, this is about a giant wanting to eat a mouse, and a mouse stealing stuff. Great message for children, Disney Aug 09, Nicolas rated it liked it Shelves: kid-s-books. Unfortunately this adaptation doesn't work so well. It's long and manages to be a little dull too. Although this sanitized version is fairly romanticized, children will enjoy following Mickey up and down the beanstalk as he sneaks past the giant and outwits him.

A lot of what made Bambi a great film, for instance, was that the images largely spoke for themselves. Here, there seems to be a lack of confidence in the story, so the filmmakers rely on voice-over to add to it. The cheapness shows, and the stories lose any kind of impact because of it. In Fun and Fancy Free , at least, there is more of a story than Saludos Amigos or The Three Caballeros which also suffered from constant, heavy handed narration. Fun and Fancy Free is an odd little movie, mainly because it tried to package two mini-movies together; Bongo and Mickey and the Beanstalk , and they really have nothing to do with each other and have no thematic ties whatsoever. But the challenge for this review comes from the style the creators chose to tell the tale. Interesting choice. You can watch that version here.
