The classic Disney animated film makes its way into classrooms and living rooms across the country every Halloween season as a matter of pure tradition. According to Wikipedia , the terrifying tale of the Headless Horseman is likely based on the legend of a German soldier who lost his head via cannonball during the American revolution.

This is one of many literary details Disney leaves out of its adaptation. But the short film still manages to be utterly frightening. Disney has been known to release disturbing horror movies directed toward children. And The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , despite its pleasant imagery and the lilting voice of Bing Crosby as narrator, is a violent and horrifying story. However, vivid book imagery of pumpkins, cool air, and autumn colors lend the entire story to Halloween.

For example, it was originally the second half of a two-part film called The Adventures of Ichabod and Mister Toad. Moreover, animators on the project felt so overwhelmed by the demanding atmosphere, they abandoned Walt Disney Studios after the project.

Along with "Rip Van Winkle", it is one of the few works of early American literature that is still widely read for pleasure today. The story's main character is a teacher named Ichabod Crane who moves to a small rural community near the valley known as Sleepy Hollow and hopes to wed a wealthy woman. He makes up his mind to marry Katrina Van Tassel, the young daughter of a very prosperous farmer. Ichabod Crane is not, however, the only man who takes an interest in Katrina. Brom Bones, a popular and athletic young man, is also in love with her. The place where Ichabod Crane lives and the surrounding countryside are said to be haunted by various ghosts, the most feared of which is the terrifying Headless Horseman. Ichabod Crane is a tall, skinny, superstitious man from Connecticut. He come to a largely Dutch rural community in upstate New York near the valley Sleepy Hollow to work as the local schoolteacher and to find a rich wife. However, he has to compete for Katrina's affections with the local strongman Abraham Van Brundt, better known as Brom Bones.
