Darling in the Franxx Episode 24 (Final) Review: Never Let Me Go
The feeling of dread building up inside only worsened with the after-episode discussion, which was— is —quite divisive , to say the least. Why else, after all, would director Atsushi Nishigori go through all the effort to pull together this multi-studio team for the series? While the fanservice can be off-putting and even despicable , the passion behind the work, and all the effort devoted to its story and characters, makes it well worth the watch.
The doctor said parasites are better off being a little pervy. No matter where the show goes or what it does, the depiction of the FRANXX piloting positions in these first few episodes is always going to be one of the most ridiculously distasteful and asinine story decisions I have ever seen.
Even episode 3, the episode with the least amount of gratuitous fanservice thus far, still has its issues. When a work makes choices like these, it undermines the power and quality of its narrative. I once spoke of Kill la Kill by saying:.
Apart from fanservice, episode 3 also raises potential story concerns regarding Zero Two. With a narrative that seems highly concerned with tackling the issues of marginalization that surround Zero Two, this kind of characterization is detrimental.
A story about learning to be kinder is welcome and appreciated. But to purposefully kill others, and to do so with glee, might, for me, be a dealbreaker for this series just as the fanservice was for others. To have to see your partners continually die due to reasons out of your own control is one thing, but to intentionally bring about their deaths—and with pleasure—is another.
Some acts are simply unforgivable. I know, I know. Zero Two needs to give more consideration to the feelings of others, especially the one she calls her darling. Since Zero Two justifiably berates Hiro for staring at her in episode 3, she clearly wants to be treated with respect herself. The point was made, and made well: Hiro and Zero Two are the ones who are perfect for each other. However, episode 3 gives rise to problems of repetition.
Viewers already understand that no one else can partner with Zero Two but Hiro and no one else can partner with Hiro but Zero Two. Why stretch this point out so far, especially when episode 2 seemed so against stretching it out? Episode 3 also feels considerably slower in many regards. Why not use the monologues as a way to express this information instead? The long conversation the kids have in the birdcage this episode exemplifies these problems.
The plot seems to be stalling and meandering, devoting more time to recap, needless repetition, and exposition than actually furthering the story. To quote:. He may or may not achieve it. What is the protagonist going to face up against in the climax? McKee uses Rocky as an example of this kind of plot. As McKee argues:. That loser?! Otherwise, there would be no emotional connection and the story would fall apart before it even got the chance to begin. I admit that Kiznaiver quickly grabbed my interest with its first two episodes, and I was optimistic that it would be everything I loved about Kill la Kill with everything I disliked stripped away.
The third episode lost me a bit, though, mainly because it is here that the show comes across as very meandering, devoting a massive amount of time to one character, Yoshiharu, rather than the character it needs to. As a result of the format, a couple of characters get fleshed-out backstories, others are ignored and feel extraneous, but most importantly, the relationship between Katsuhira and Noriko—which is seemingly supposed to be the driving force of the entire series!
Why does Noriko specifically like Katsuhira so much in the first place? What draws them together? They see one another as a chance to move forward. Their conversations are immediately open and honest. Noriko of Kiznaiver, meanwhile, insults Katsuhira and pushes him down stairs so hard that it would have killed him if not for the Kizna System in episode 1 of their show.
One of my biggest personal philosophies about stories is that every story has been told before, and what makes a single story stand out all lies in execution. Mitsuru feels as though he has dimension, and his character arc could add wonderfully to some of the overall themes of the series.
With Hiro out of the way, he can prove himself to be the top parasite stamen. Ikuno should stop embarrassing herself, Hiro should stop embarrassing himself, and everyone should see him as the great pilot that he is.
Mitsuru also serves as an excellent contrast to Hiro in this way. Hiro risks his life because of his great lack of self-love as well, but while Hiro continually tries and refuses to give up even when everything seems hopeless, Mitsuru is the opposite.
Once something goes wrong, he stops in his tracks. Will Mitsuru give up? Will Hiro blame himself for what happened, as it could be argued to partly be his fault that Mitsuru ever piloted with Zero Two at all? How will Hiro feel if Mitsuru gives up his dream of flying all because of this one bad experience?
Will there be a pep talk between them? In fact, I was actually quite surprised by episode 3! Hiro comes off to me as an admirable, likeable protagonist, and quite frankly, a lot of the criticism against him rubs me the wrong way.
Immensely so. Let men be sad, especially in a story aimed at teenage boys, and especially when the character in question is so actively trying to recover. How in the world is this a bad thing?
Hiro wants to save his friends, and he knows that they have a limited amount of time. If he argues or makes a scene, he risks losing the kids he named and grew up with forever.
All of episode 3—and perhaps the series as a whole—pushes this idea of rebellion. As it turns out, Hiro does regret going by the book and following the rules, but he does so not because it hurts him and makes him look bad, but because it hurts Mitsuru.
Like the episodes before it, episode 3 is chock-full of wonderful compositions, breathtaking directing, and nice—if unsubtle—usages of symbolism. One of the greatest pieces of symbolism in episode 3 is in the elevators. No matter how much Ichigo may wish to form a connection with Hiro like the one he has with Zero Two, they are still so distanced from one another. While Hiro and Ichigo are going up, Zero Two is not. Color also plays a large role in this episode. Blue and white are the colors of the ocean and the sky, and blue itself could represent freedom, but the blue present in the facility is subdued and artificial.
On this note of freedom, the shot of the ducks in episode 3 is striking. As ducks live both in the seas and the skies, they are the ultimate representation of freedom. Even more, FRANXX have been shown thus far to malfunction in situations of jealousy; Delphinium becomes heavy and difficult for Goro to handle in episode 3 when Ichigo thinks Hiro is piloting with Zero Two, and Argentea falls over when Miku grows jealous that her partner Zorome would think of piloting with another girl.
While Hiro and Zero Two also save the day, they do so almost bloodlessly. Both of them feel so isolated, which is part of why they fit together so well: they come from the same place. In the final shot, Zero Two and Hiro look as though they are situated right by each other, which is fitting, because Zero Two is opening up to Hiro and speaking honestly with him, thereby bringing the two of them closer together. The two are close, but not that close.
When Hiro tells Zero Two to ride with Mitsuru, the two are split up by the screen just as Ichigo and Hiro were last episode. Hiro and Goro talking could have been simple shot reverse shots where Goro speaks and then Hiro does and so on, but the show does so much more than that. The image of their reflections in the water is especially notable and evocative.
Similarly, there is so much to love in the compositions, design choices, and detail of the birdcage conversation. The detail of Miku playing with her hair is small but filled with so much life, as is how theatrical Mitsuru is, and the lighting is particularly stunning. The canted angle used for Mitsuru before he pilots with Zero Two is similarly excellent. Giant mechs are notoriously hard to animate, but the team here not only animates them, but animates them so humanly and in ways that are so endearing.
As of now, episode 3 is my favorite episode thus far. This episode definitely seems like a push for the better, and I, for one, am very much looking forward to wherever the series goes next.
