Based on the manga of the same name created by Shuichi Shigeno that was released in , MF Ghost is the sequel to the hugely popular Initial D , which also arrived in manga form first before receiving an anime adaptation. The MF Ghost series is set in the s in a world where self-driving electric cars are common. In Japan, there is a racing series called MFG founded by Ryo Takahashi to preserve traditional racing heritage, with competitors using internal combustion engine cars. However, the star of the show is a Toyota 86 , which is driven by protagonist Kanata Rivington, a year-old of Japanese and British parentage who returns to Japan to find his missing father, Ken Katagiri.

The Initial D sequel manga series, MF Ghost , first began four years after Shigeno completed the original run of the predecessor series, and has been a success for Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine since its launch in Fans had been wondering whether it would get an official anime adaptation of its own, and now many fans will be introduced to the world of the biggest racing anime and manga franchise of all time. Right up front, I have a confession to make: for the vast majority of my life, I have lived in Indianapolis. Home of the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing", you can't live in the area too long without getting interested in some peripheral way in auto sports. I've been to the Indy a few times and listened regularly to radio broadcasts of races since television coverage is blacked out in much of the state. I'm not an auto enthusiast by any stretch. I can't tell a gasket from a piston. But I do enjoy the excitement of racing, even if my experience is only with guys running in an oval a few hundred times in the middle of the midwestern United States.
