Solar Opposites 'Pupa with Fan' Enamel Pin
The world of anime is a lovely domain, full to the brim with one-of-a-kind experiences that prove that this is not just about kids' cartoons. From over-the-top action series with battles where it feels like the entire world is at stake all of the time to seemingly reined-in slice-of-life settings that become more and more insane as one delves further into them , there's no end to the sheer number of unique anime available. With the sheer quantity of anime developed on a regular basis, it's a given that some of these shows will be far from brilliant.
The popular platform MyAnimeList has the absolute worst of the worst featured on their website, with abysmal ratings. All of these series have been selected with the criteria that they need to have a few episodes under their belt because the only thing worse than one episode of torture is nine more of the same.
Updated on July 27th, by Leah Thomas: Anime is a medium that keeps on giving, and since this list was first published, several new contenders for the worst anime of all time have pushed their way to the bottom of MyAnimeList's ranking system.
The list has been updated accordingly. While each episode might only be four minutes long, Bishoujo Yuugi Unit Crane Game Girls still somehow manages to mark a spot on this list. This is a testament to how many things can go wrong in a measly four minutes. The premise of this anime involves saving the world by playing crane games, which definitely fails to land.
This, coupled with the Newgrounds-quality animation, turns this show into a forgettable outing that just isn't worth it. At first glance, Ragnastrike Angels looks like just another run-of-the-mill military anime featuring idol-esque girls in buttoned-up uniforms. On paper, its premise is hardly the worst thing ever: In the future, a special team of women known as Ragna Strikers is conscripted to aid Japan in the battle against hostile aliens.
So what makes it so much worse than similar fare? The plot is hugely incoherent, and it's apparent from a single episode that the show exists for the sole purpose of promoting a mobile game. Each episode is a whopping thirty seconds long. This isn't an anime, it's a series of ugly ads.
In what feels like the most backward approach to marketing known to man, KochinPa! Basically, if a studio decided it liked a commercial for a slot machine and turned it into a cartoon, that'd be the US equivalent. Given that each episode is just 15 seconds of bad jokes, why not just let the commercials do the work? The old iteration of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is a great show that generally flew under everyone's radar as a child.
However, if you were one of the lucky few that actually saw this show back when it was even remotely relevant, then prepare to have your image of the characters completely ruined by the iteration of the show. The laziness present in this new iteration of a once-beloved show is what drives the nail in its proverbial coffin. To put this into context, the main character of this show is a guy named Banjo solely because he carries a banjo with him.
Let no one say that bad anime is a thing of the past. Ninja Collection was one of a few awful anime to air in , and the show managed to disappoint fans across the spectrum with its ugly animation and convoluted storytelling, and there aren't even any actual ninjas involved.
Supposedly a horror series about a group of people fighting an evil smoke called the darkness, each four-minute episode features a would-be scary encounter with the "darkness" and its victims, but beyond that, there's no story. The animation is so bad it's hard to watch, and the main cast is bound to survive the whole run, unfortunately. Welcome to the fold, Gibiate. Perhaps a show with a premise centered around a viral pandemic should have been more poignant in , but that was sadly not the case.
Gibiate is a mess from start to finish. It's the "distant future" of , and a virus has transformed people into monsters based on their race and ethnicity— which is as gross and tone-deaf as it sounds. Samurai from the Edo period travel to this future world to help find a cure for the virus.
The show was hyped to pieces and had some prominent names attached, and what resulted was such an ugly, unfeeling debacle that it's likely the creators were looking to make a quick pandemic buck.
Bad anime doesn't feel quite as empty if it seems that the artists at least tried to create something decent. The same can't be said for Mahou Shoujo? The plot is as simple as can be, and yet the execution is so bad that the entire structure falls upon itself. The idea of three girls getting the power of magic to combat evil seems extremely formulaic and hard to mess up, but Mahou Shoujo? Wonder Momo is considered one of the worst anime of all time, and it managed to cement this reputation in just five episodes, which must be some kind of record.
Ostensibly about an idol wannabe who ends up fighting evil aliens instead, it's no surprise that Wonder Momo feels dated from the word go. But then, any anime that was based on an obscure beat-'em-up arcade game from was bound for failure without significant revamping. Even considering everything working against it, however, Wonder Momo is painful to watch. The idea of releasing a full-blown anime series in Adobe Flash might have sounded like an innovative and fresh concept on paper, especially back in But Hanoka, unfortunately, doesn't execute this concept to the degree it could have.
A sci-fi show that focuses on action needs to have good action sequences. However, the inherent restrictions when it comes to flash animation mean that Hanoka 's visuals are anything but engrossing. Bad anime connoisseurs will be familiar with the name Pupa , an anime that is so bizarre, disgusting, and horrible that trying to explain what this show's about is an endeavor in itself.
The story revolves around a brother who gains regenerative powers and his infected sister who needs to eat flesh to stay alive. This makes up for a truly grotesque setting, with the younger sibling feeding on the elder to stay alive in a perverse turn of events.
Pupa should've taken a page out of shows like Demon Slayer or Fullmetal Alchemist to figure out how to craft a halfway-decent relationship between its main cast.
Comedy in anime is truly one-of-a-kind, with some shows being legendary for the manner in which they deftly weave humor into their narratives. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about Vampire Holmes. As is the case with most terrible anime adaptations, Vampire Holmes ' story is based on a mobile game, which should set off enough flags for now.
None of the jokes land, the animation, as is the trend in these anime shows, is horrible, and the character of Sherlock Holmes and others is completely butchered. People often have low expectations with any anime series that targets little kids , and Forest Fairy Five might be the reason why.
In a world where Japan turns into an anime kingdom, a bunch of mushroom fairies, who are supposed to be 8-years-old even though their voices are way more mature, partake in some run-of-the-mill adventures with animation that is clearly not up to acceptable standards.
As any artist worth their salt can attest that content that's created for kids should be just as thoughtfully made as content made for adults, though of course with different themes. Shows like this are degrading as well as ugly. Fans understand that animation can be a major task, but that's why artists are paid to do it. And so it must be said that Ladyspo puts absolutely no effort into animation whatsoever. The entire series feels like a surreal slideshow with absolutely no redeeming qualities.
There's something of a plot about intergalactic sports here somewhere, but whatever semblance of a solid story there might be in this show is completely overshadowed by what could just be the worst animation present on this list.
A middle-schooler using photoshop could do better. Although fans have sort of come to love EX-ARM for being so very awful, in a sort of Tommy-Wisseau way, the show is even worse than initially thought. Infamously bad but shamelessly promoted by Crunchyroll, fans began lambasting EX-ARM from the moment its first trailer debuted.
Were animators hired, or was this anime produced by cats walking on keyboards? Hideous fight scenes, truncated movements, actual glitches, and unexpected zoom-ins are par for the course. Oh, there is a premise, though: A boy who dislikes electronics dies and is turned into an AI-powered superweapon. He's then used by a beautiful woman who uses him to fight.
And they say romance is dead. Created with the sole purpose of promoting two tabloid celebrities, the worst intentions inspired this series from the get-go. Even trying to call this show a tool for fanservice would be overstating its accomplishments. From a threadbare plot about reality star secret agents to horrible characters and animation, it's obvious as to why this show has bagged the spot of being the lowest-rated anime on MyAnimeList.

In the vein of almost every Christmas movie ever made, A Very Solar Opposites Special shows that the Shlorpian family will have to discover the true meaning of Christmas. However, at the onset of the trailer, they, much like everyone else, have bought into the consumerism of the holiday and are having fun buying dead tree carcasses and hot chocolate dispensers that seemingly come from Santa's butt. However, when they are given word that the Christmas spirit is nearly depleted, Korvo Roiland , Terry Thomas Middleditch , Yumyulack Sean Giambrone , and Jesse Mary Mack will declare that they must save Christmas or the world will be destroyed. What follows next within the trailer is what can only be described as a melange of colors and holiday music as the Shlorpian family battle ninja-Santas and Armageddon-like conditions. It seems that in order to get a handle on the true meaning of Christmas, Korvo and company will crudely and hilariously insert themselves into classic Christmas movies to draw on their themes and message, including Love Actually , National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and It's A Wonderful Life.

Remember my comment about being able to feel the enthusiasm of the assembled talent emanating from the first episode? However, things start out okay, with Kathleen recording Sensui for posterity, then sparring with him to determine his ability. If only he had a more worthy opponent than the Gibia. This means Sensui not looks very much like a lone-wolf FF protagonist. Kenroku now rocks blue hair, making the two more discernable from a distance. Despite a relatively solid first half involving character interactions in the light, Kathleen and Senroku mostly remain ciphers while Sensui is your typical stoic honorable samurai. Then the lights of the camp go out and all hell breaks loose…and unfortunately not in a good way.
