A sinister threat is invading Tokyo: flesh-eating "ghouls" who appear identical to humans and blend into their population. Reserved college student Ken Kaneki buries his nose in books and avoids the news of the growing crisis. However, the appearance of an attractive woman named Rize Kamishiro shatters his solitude when she forwardly asks him on a date. While walking Rize home, Kaneki discovers she isn't as kind as she first appeared, and she has led him on with sinister intent.
After a tragic struggle, he later awakens in a hospital to learn his life was saved by transplanting the now deceased Rize's organs into his own body. Kaneki's body begins to change in horrifying ways, and he transforms into a human-ghoul hybrid.
As he embarks on his new dreadful journey, Kaneki clings to his humanity in the evolving bloody conflict between society's new monsters and the government agents who hunt them. The disorder is very uncommon in humans however, in the fictional world anime characters with heterochromia are more common than one can imagine. Heterochromia in humans appears either as a hereditary trait unassociated with other diseases, as a symptom of various syndromes, or as the result of a trauma. But, in the anime world characters with heterochromia, or different colored eyes, tend to have special abilities or even multiple personalities. Sometimes, the dual eye colors turn out to be the most striking aspects of their character design. The story takes place in a world infested by Ghouls, vampire-like creatures that look like humans but are actually monsters that feed solely on human flesh. The problems instigated by them are so significant that the police has introduced a special branch named CCG Commission of Counter Ghoul that deals exclusively with them, with Kureo Mado and his assistant, Kotaro Amon being the enforcers that star in this first season of the anime. This world suddenly collapses upon Ken Kaneki, a university student who finally manages to get a date with Rize Kamishiro, only to find that she is a ghoul. In the extreme series of events that follow, Ken transforms into a hybrid of human and ghoul, with the test on his humanity becoming harder and harder as he is introduced to a secret society of ghouls that run Antique, a kind of leisure, intellectual cafe. The group is headed by Kuzen and includes Toka Kirishima and a number of other ghouls, who are nothing like he imagined.

Tokyo Ghoul is a massive favorite among the anime faithful. Its tragic tale of the young, innocent Ken Kaneki pulled at the heart strings of many who connected with his involvement in a literal identity war while its promise and delivery of bloody battles and sadistic scenes attracted many others. Given its consistent season orders, massive manga sales, and the sheer number of zipper masks at any anime convention, it's no secret that the war between humanity and ghouls has attracted quite a few viewers. Well, I guess that explains everything! I've had a sneaking suspicion for many episodes now that Yoshimura's past holds the secrets to blowing this whole story and its tripartite conflict wide open, but I never saw this coming. The One-Eyed Owl is actually two separate ghouls, in a tragic "sins of the father" situation brought on by Yoshimura's dark origin and ensuing love affair with a human.
