Differences between jojo manga and anime

Even as a child, I sensed something different about cartoons like Robotech and Voltron. Compared to other shows, they struck me as serious, dramatic and stylish. Each episode contributed to a longer narrative and when something changed, it remained that way for the rest of the series. The straight-lined art affected me me in a way other cartoons' softer, rounded styles never did. At the time I didn't know these cartoons came from Japan, where they had different titles, and occasionally different narratives.

10 manga to read for fans of One Punch Man

Nowadays, most of the anime coming out are adaptations of successful mangas. The story has proved itself and an anime adds life to it- if done right. David Productions was responsible for the Stardust Crusader's anime adaptation and they remained pretty faithful to the manga. They copied each panel as it is and the essence of Jojo was not lost. Although, there were a few additions in the anime.

It's subjective if they were good or bad, overall Stardust Crusaders turned out to be great. The changes mainly occurred in fight scenes and character development- and it was all done under Hirohiko Araki's supervision. Viewers, mostly teenagers, love to see edgy, not a care in the world characters. Jotaro studied in a high school, swore at his mother, and beat villains, with little to no effort, it can't get edgier than that.

Rudeness only looks good if the viewers are emotionally attached to the character, as in Sasuke's case. Fans complained about his attitude a lot. In the manga, Jotaro was more behaved and respectful, rather than a bully.

It made him more approachable and relatable. Japan has cracked down on anime by imposing strict censorship laws. And Jojo is everything, but a family-friendly show. Even the manga was seinen- nudity and gore are staples of the genre. So the anime had to make a sacrifice to appeal to a large audience. Since Jotaro is a teenager, his smoking as well all the bloody and over the top gore scenes were censored. The uncensored version is available on Crunchyroll.

The anime gave Araki a chance to take his story in a slightly different direction. One such change was the addition of Anne. She was a runaway girl, posing as a boy. She accompanied the gang for a while but Joseph forced her to go home.

In the manga, there was no Anne or an alternate character that took her place. She was an anime original and provided some amusing moments. It was good while it lasted.

The one thing that sets Jojo apart from traditional anime, other than its compelling story and lovable characters, is the artwork. Even though it's inspired by other manga, Araki's touch gave it an unconventional look.

The artwork was the reason why some of the early Jojo anime adaptations failed. In Stardust Crusaders, Araki went crazy with the use of color schemes. The style changed from episode to episode and in one episode he decided to do the sky pink, artistic. The world of Jojo is full of mysteries, thankfully, one thing was adequately explained. The secret behind the stands, an arrow. The arrow had its roots attached back to part 1 but it was not until Diamond is Unbreakable that the lore behind it was told.

The arrow can grant any human supernatural powers if stabbed with it. The same arrow can be seen in Dio's room, as he also got his abilities from it. The Joestar bloodline boasts some of the strongest warriors of their time. Jotaro, Dio, Joseph, and many other powerful characters have one similarity- the Joestar birthmark.

A detailed star-shaped mark appearing on the back of the shoulder of every member of the family. Jotaro's birthmark was seen several times in the anime but the manga has no mention of it. Araki was able to do this foreshadowing because he had already developed the story.

It was easier for him to plan this stuff out. Jotaro's Star Platinum is pretty versatile when it comes to powers and special abilities. At first, he just seemed to possess immense strength and speed. He crossed his limits when he went toe to toe with Dio's The World.

As the show progress, Jotaro makes use of his other powers like super eyesight and an important one, Star Finger. Star Platinum extends his fingers that can hit an enemy like a bullet.

Relatively, the use of Star Finger is more in the anime than the manga. Jotaro and Joseph were the main stars of the show. They should've been the focus. But in the process of building side characters, Araki went a little overboard.

He gave Polnareff exponentially greater screen time, where anything strange happened to him every time. Polnareff also used Silver Chariot armor to detach more as well. It granted him increased speed and agility but at the cost of being more vulnerable. He once used it against Avdol and learned his lesson. When the whole party arrives in Egypt, they take a group photo as a souvenir and to capture a happy memory.

And it was a good decision. Since many of them didn't make it to the end. The picture gave closure to the characters and viewers alike. That picture never appeared in Stardust Crusaders manga and only makes an appearance later in the series. They hit the feels with that, which made every fan cry. The one complains most of the veteran manga fans make about Stardust Crusaders is that it was dragged. The fights could've ended in one episode.

Also, the weekly villain formula was not appreciated by most fans. The story felt repetitive and lethargic. Thankfully, in the Egypt arc, the quality improved. There was a little bit of everything: comedy, real threats, and finally, the world-famous, Dio vs Jotaro.

The second arc makes up for all the mistakes. Read Next in anime.
