My Isekai Life isn't the very first anime to give these JRPG-style monsters a makeover, but this anime makes sure that its slimes are adorable, funny, and surprisingly clever and useful during protagonist Yuji's travels in the fantasy realm. These slimes are more like the Minions of Gru the villain, but without the silly memes. They also mean business, even if they're small and cute. He is a multiclassing isekai hero, being both a beast tamer and a wizard-like sage, so he can make those two classes more than the sum of their parts to pull off some impressive victories.
Yuji has a wolf named Proud Wolf to aid him , but most of all, he has a large handful of blue slimes at his command, and they are capable of remarkable feats when Yuji gives them orders. Scouting the nearby countryside to find monsters is just the start -- Yuji can also use his slimes to cast his spells from afar, meaning he can effectively be in several places at once.
He even arranged his slimes around the town of Phastan to create a huge barrier that no lone sage could ever make. In a way, the slimes are an extension of Yuji himself, and few, if any recent anime have used slimes or any other monster like that. In addition, the slimes themselves are more than just tools for Yuji to use.
They are his friends, and they even have unique appearances and lively dialogue to match. They may be round blobs of blue jelly like most slimes, but they also have facial features such as a handlebar mustache, an eyepatch, scars and more. No other anime has treated slimes quite like this, staying true to what slimes are while also using these visual cues to mark them as special, heroic slimes rather than disposable critters for low-level players to grind. They therefore add a great deal of charm to My Isekai Life , feeling familiar but fresh at the same time, and fans can only imagine what these amusing slimes will say or do in future episodes.
They're almost like a crowd of chattering children swarming around Yuji's legs, asking for snacks or something fun to do. Yuji is almost like a slime dad, and that puts him in the same league as few other isekai characters.
Yuji may not have completely reinvented the concept of OP isekai heroes or the basic nature of slimes, but he is going in the right direction with his little blue minions, and he might soon live up to other isekai heroes who also view slimes as friends rather than cheap sources of XP. One example is Rimuru Tempest, who is friendly to other slimes due to being one himself.
Rimuru prefers his blue-haired androgynous human form by now, but he's still a slime at heart, and that has led to more than a little humor or clever battlefield tactics in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Yuji won't turn into a slime himself, but he can take advantage of how stretchy and rubbery these creatures can be. They have no bones to break and no blood to bleed. An even closer comparison is that of Azusa Aizawa the benevolent isekai witch. She's not a slime, but she did slaughter millions of them to grind XP before she befriended the slime sisters Shalsha and Falfa.
This brought out the best in Azusa, establishing her as a warm, caring, maternal person who is finally thinking about someone else's happiness rather than her own. She became an ideal slime mom, and to continue that trend, Azusa befriended other fantasy characters and invited them into her home, acting like a responsible big sister. This suggests that Yuji might do the same for his slimes if he isn't already, and act like a warm-hearted kindergarten teacher handling a crowd of students.
