Best Winter 2021 Anime Premieres

I can say this much for sure — there are 3 series this season that would have been locks for the Top 10 list, and another couple that would have been Top 20 for sure with the potential for more in both cases. For me specifically, it boils down to a couple of main factors.

The shows I needed to be really good are, and among the rest of my list, more shows have exceeded my expectations than fallen short of them.

Kemono Jihen Episodes Watched : 3 Grade : A- Comments : In contrast to Horimiya there was a little more reason to worry about Kemono Jihen , with its less-heralded director and uncertain budget. But the first three episodes have blown that concern out of the water, as Ajia-Do and Fujimori Masaya have pretty much nailed it.

The staff turns out to be a really good fit and it seems as if the production committee has considerable faith in the project, as the budget looks to be quite respectable. Somehow the alchemy seems to be working perfectly here, as this has been an insanely fun ride so far. The art and animation is top-notch and the tone is classic Bones infectious boisterousness.

Sort of a surrealistic adult folktales collection, Koi Byoui Ramune has an interesting aesthetic, a compelling cast, and more than a little distinctiveness to bank on. As the series layers more and more character development and recurring plot in with the episodic storylines I expect it to only get better and better.

Basically this series follows the same pattern as the Cells at Work franchise, anthropomorphizing biological processes for entertainment value. Yakusoku no Neverland 2nd Season Episodes Watched: 4 Grade: B- Comments : The Promised Neverland started veering off into the promised new material with the third episode, which skipped a major arc and hugely important character from the manga.

Some fans are now speculating that the plan is to finish entirely in 12 episodes. That makes absolutely no sense to me, but it would explain the decision to go original. The problem is, as a commenter on ASF noted, what if they decide to cut the good parts and keep the bad parts?

The reliance on tired tropes can be vexing, but Mushoku approaches this material with such confidence and ease that it manages for now to feel distinct and authoritative. Technically this is a Fall series but it started too late for that check-in post so I may as well cover it here. The third episode was the best, but things took a real step back in the most recent ep, which relied heavily on clumsy humor and manufactured drama.

But I find the writing to be rather unsubtle and mannered. Shin Chuuka Ichiban! Thursday : Definitely Blogging: Beastars 2nd Season. One more thing before I wrap.

Everything has gotten more expensive again this year, and it gets more and more difficult to justify the time I have to put in to make the site one I feel proud of.

In Kemono Jihen, does Kon the fox girl get any better? Hard to answer. Kon develops, like all the characters in this series do. Kon is among the most important of the supporting characters for sure.

But I like the characters just enough to probably watch to the end. For me, the top two have been Kemono Jihen and Skate the Infinity. It has a certain zany quality to it that I like, and the characters Shu Bi and Kai intrigue me. Among all shows this season, Beastars is at a different level. Getting darker or not, there is magic in the writing and direction that keeps pulling me in. I also like Kimono Jihen.

BTW, Murase Ayumu is good. For a second, I thought Akira was voiced by a female seiyuu. Murase-kun is a good actor — he brought Shun and Hinata to life. The silliness of Reki and Langa amuses me. It could be just me, but rarely have I heard of the name Langa. Horimiya works better in an OVA than a full cour. I have no interest in the second season of Yakusoku no Neverland. Big thanks to Enzo for his winter recommendations.

They are wonderful. To me, he looks unbelievable and contrived. Koi Byoui Ramune. I liked the second episode, mostly because of its harsh humor.

The temporary characters clients and their stories look too much caricature to me. Though, I have a feeling that the show can improve, change direction or something.

Yakusoku no Neverland. Wonder Egg Priority. Waiting for the fourth girl for now. The last two — for balancing the season for me. Honestly, both deserve dropping. Re:Zero is good for what it is.

Definitely feels grounded despite some blatant obvious tropes and pandering. Am not getting work up about the surface level which has many up in arms, especially the many uncompromising crusaders in ANN. Looking forward to the complete story. It does not miss a beat in showing us what kind of world and the kind of characters and relationships that come about. Enjoying this. We got a quick and short taste in Episode 3 with the loli baba and her successor shopkeeper and how Ramune is linked to them.

Otherwise, it is like Japanese supernatural fairy tales but for an older audience. He may be the weakling there but out in the normal world, he is effectively Saitama of One Punch Man. Sometimes, plain vanilla is refreshingly simple and good enough for a change. Episode 4 pulled it back from the brink of it being dropped.

I see what the appeal is to those who are enamored of the show. Just like I how see some people are enamored of current Fruits Basket anime series which I found to be eyerolling in the show being determined to beat you to death with the club of manufactured tragic melodrama. Those are the new non-sequel shows that I am watching so far.

The rest of the non-sequel shows are either not decided yet or dropped. Onward then to Winter Yakusoku no Neverland 2nd Season — Guardian Enzo. Related posts. Anime , Made in Abyss , Reviews. Here are my thoughts on them. I like to occasionally indulge in a good sports anime. Watching spirited teens claw their way to success via their burning passion is always a fun time, whether the sport in question is something athletic like volleyball or baseball, or a more intellectual pursuit like Go. Or in this case, skateboard-racing down an abandoned mine while wearing zany pro wrestling outfits and throwing firecrackers as weapons! All that changes when a boy named Langa?

Just like that, another anime season has come to an end.

Wrapping Up the Winter 2021 Anime Season

The team shares their picks from a season characterized by ambitious originals and solid sequels. Vrai, Peter, and Caitlin check in on the Winter season, from beefy skate boys to overworked cells. If schlocky action and gritty murder games are your deal, you might find yourself at home with High-Rise Invasion. Despite the strange mid-season start for the show, Kiyo in Kyoto seems to be lovingly crafted and easygoing show meant to get people hungry for Japan. It is surprising, tense, and stunning to look at, and I am beyond psyched to watch more of it.

Anime has come a long way in recent years. Hulu might not be a primarily anime-centric streaming platform, but it has an impressive selection available to subscribers. On top of the back catalog already available, there are several new anime additions being updated on Hulu, including the latest hit in the form of Spy x Family. That brings a hefty library of anime TV series and movies to stream as well as Star Wars, Marvel, and sports coverage. New to the world of anime?

From the final season of Attack on Titan to the return of Dr Stone and The Promised Neverland, could Winter be considered as the greatest season of anime ever? For the entertainment industry, was pretty rough: theatres around the world closed their doors and big-budget series were delayed as production sets fell silent. However, as we move into the new year, fans of anime have a level of hype, expectation and child-like excitement surrounding — in particular, the Winter slate.
