History of Britain and Ireland

This is the twice-weekly hidden open thread. Post about anything you want, ask random questions, whatever. Seems to be set in the same universe as the excellent short story The Island. Anyone read it yet? I did. Maybe a bit short, but good. It has a really intriguing setting.

An almost entirely automated spaceship is travelling the galaxy, building a network of wormholes. The crew members only get woken up once every few hundred years, when the AI needs some weird monkey-logic done, and even then only a few of them get woken up at a time. The crew comes to resent the AI and organizes an underground movement and eventually a revolt under these bizarre circumstances. And would you suggest reading the short stories before the novel? I would try offering them for free on Craigslist or something like that.

If someone wants them, great. If not, just throw them away. A: Throw them in the trash. Toronto has a complicated three-way system for trash: regular garbage, recyclables, and organics. This system has a Waste Wizard that offers guidance on what to do with various sorts of trash.

Let them turn into bicycles and then sell them. Everyone knows bicycles are environmental. Favorite words, anyone? Do we have any lawyers here who understand RICO? Unpack this for the laymen? Tends to, yes. Drug money RICO is the standard way of nuking organized crime. To see it being used for rape charges is… wow. Could be nothing big, could burn down a quarter of Hollywood. An indictment would be if criminal charges were being laid by the government.

These are new allegations in a civil RICO suit. That makes it a bit of a legal super-weapon, because the illegal action can be trivial for example, planning a protest that violates traffic law is technically sufficient , but the liability extends for any act of anyone in the group.

This is a class-action, which is civil. Suppose you have a black box with a hole in one end, where you put marbles, and a hole at the other end, where marbles come out. If you input marbles at a somewhat random, sporadic tempo, the box spits the marbles out in a roughly wavy tempo.

Meaning, for a while it will seem to be spitting out a lot of marbles regularly and then quickly the rate will drop off to nearly zero for a long while, then pick up again. A marbles spend varying amounts of time getting through the box so marble 1 might spend 5 seconds but marble 2 might spend 9 seconds, etc. Let me put it another way: which could you eliminate — A or B — and still get the wavy output tempo?

We can assume that the designers of the box wanted there to be a wave output. This would mean that they intentionally added a delay. They would have to add the delay at the end to make sure it was accurate. If the delay was in the middle, one ball could take too long and interrupt the wave pattern.

Or is it random like the input? So the output rate is independent of the input rate. The rate of input is a random variable; the system is a process that holds the information [M 1, M 2…M n] for a random?

So far is this the correct framing? In the case of literal marbles, B is a sufficient but not necessary condition for A. B can cause A. Restaurant patrons are not marbles in a flume.

There is a big literature on queuing theory that may be of interest. The checkout line thing has an easily observable reason. The maximal problem customer argues over the price of every item, fishes through a disorganized bag for coupons many of which are expired or inapplicable and result in more arguments , tries to pay with payment methods not accepted or requiring approval checks, travelers checks, EBT cards for disallowed items and generally makes trouble. You have a certain number of cashiers, and your output rate at any given time depends mostly on how many cashiers are blocked on problem customers not all of whom are maximal.

The same thing applies to banks, except the problems are different. The bottleneck is almost always B. Think of it this way. If there is a bottleneck and lines, then you have to wait for the extra ahead of you to burn down. Male, but not female, C3H mice given 2. Melatonin pills are typically mg. So if the quote is correct, the dosage humans commonly take is two orders of magnitude below the dosage that shows significant effects in male mice. I recall an article posted on Less Wrong some time ago suggesting longer commutes were associated with lower happiness.

So, we are nearly 20 years into the 21st century. Has the new century produced any outright classics yes, books or films or games or whatever that will still be getting attention 50 or years from now?

I refuse to believe something a big as the War on Terror can happen and not produce anything that sticks. Books: No idea. The former I hope becomes a childhood classic, the later I hope dies alone and forgotten with a stake through its heart. Other than that, the Marvel cinematic universe will be talked about for decades.

Games: Minecraft. Other modern games I can see their series continuing but few really lasting the century. A game explicitly and admittedly taking a single mechanic from a much more fleshed out and complex game, and replacing the nuance and complexity of the original game with grinding and tedium, subverting the mechanics of the original game which were intended to deliberately keep the game from feeding into addictive impulses, and thereby commercializing it?

Minecraft -popularized- player creativity in that sense, and it do so by attaching it to mechanics known in game development to be addictive, such as variable rewards. It is an imitation of what is probably the current artistic peak of game development as an enterprise, printed onto the front of a slot machine. Likewise, Doom will probably be associated with the First Person Shooter genre for a very long time.

Given that Rogue is basically a strategic game, this is a major change. Minecraft is like Twilight; more popular, but popular because of its shallowness, rather than in spite of it. It is, rather, about the way the game is designed. And it is indeed fun to lose at Dwarf Fortress. It is hilarious when you accidentally flood your fortress and everyone drowns.

That literally happened in one of my games. The child in question then tripped and fell into a moat and drowned. It tells you losing is fun because it actually makes losing fun. That elevates the game to high art — it is a game capable of generating a compelling or at least amusing tragedy, not scripted for your consumption, but arising naturally out of the mechanics of the game. At the time, he had visualised an isometric 3D building game that would be a cross between his inspirations and had made some early prototypes.

Some candidates, at least from the big names? The Second Disney Renaissance Movies are staying with us for a long time. If you live to , you will still see little girls dressing up as Anna and Elsa. I really liked Inside Out, and a lot of other people were touched by Up. It would be weird to put Lord of the Rings in the 21st century, especially since the source material had a much larger cultural impact as opposed to movies like the Godfather or Jurassic Park that exceeded the books in terms of impact.

The Hurt Locker was not very good. Or probably be received in the spirit it was intended. I agree with much of what James C said. Harry Potter will be remembered. I suspect that the age of classics is behind us in music.

In terms of games… does Pokemon count? Apparently it started in , but I guess most of the games came out in the 21st century. Maybe that biases me. Or maybe classics are decided by the youth at a given time? Pac-Man, Galaga, Tetris, Pong. Of the recent decade, Kenshi might end up there, but it is still too early to tell.

Nothing else this decade has been particularly remarkable. My inclusions are largely based on whether or not games either carved out or defined genres, and whether I expect those genres to persist. You probably need a Diablo on there, though.

Also, this is a list of descriptions of personality attributes described from a particular frame of reference. Behaviors can be applied well or poorly. By this I mean constructively, non-constructively or neutrally, or destructively. We call these applications adaptive or maladaptive. Below is the Index and brief description of each of the attributes listed.
