Green proves once and for all with 'Black Sands' that he is an artist and producer with his sights set on much higher prizes than to rule any dusty subgenre of dance music. Yes, there is an exquisite string refrain, reminiscent of Chinese art movies, but Green places this within the context of a thumping beat, deep synths and cut up vocals.
First single 'The Keeper' shows Green and Triana coming through with their most intense, emotional soul jam to date, while 'Animals' sounds like Joy Division jamming with Steve Reich and a bloco band. This combination of superb live shows and studio wizardry means that he is now perfectly placed to push on into a yet bigger league - with 'Black Sands', Bonobo has made the record to achieve it. Laid-back London groove maestro Simon Green alias Bonobo returns after a considerable absence on the recording front, at least with this fourth full-length helping of his masterfully mellow monkey magic. While it's not terribly divergent from the future-jazz cut-ups that made his earlier efforts such an instinctively natural fit with the turn-of-the-century Ninja Tune stable, Black Sands evidences a clear evolution into a more distinctive, sophisticated, and complex style, resulting in his most musically adventurous work to date, and certainly his most modern-sounding. Elsewhere, "We Could Forever" is a funky Afro-Latin workout riding an infectiously crisp guitar riff, and the scruffy, swing-inflected breakbeats that dominated Bonobo's earlier output crop up again on "Kong" and "El Toro. That's especially true on the two closing cuts, both stretching toward seven minutes, which eschew electronics almost entirely and feel more than anything like dense, moody, compositionally intricate modern jazz. At the other end of Black Sands' polychromatic though tonally consistent spectrum are a clutch of cuts featuring the rather blandly breezy vocals of Andreya Triana -- silky smooth electro-samba "Wonder When" and neo-soul "The Keeper" that make for more than passable mood fodder but can't quite match the musical inventiveness displayed elsewhere though Green does weave her vocals quite deftly among the clustered woodwinds and sparse stutter-step of "Eyesdown. Music Album Review: Bonobo's "Black Sands"
For my first album review for MensXP , I'm going to introduce you to one of my favorite genres of music: trip-hop. Officially, trip-hop is defined as "down-tempo electronic music. Bonobo is the stage name of Simon Green, an acclaimed British DJ who has several previous albums to his credit, none of which are as good as "Black Sands. Listening to Black Sands, I feel like Green has pursued his journey of musical exploration further than ever before with this album. He's used exotic instruments like the mandolin, harp and harmonium--among others--in his musical arrangements. What results is a perfectly blended pot-pourri of electro pulses, jazz sounds, and fresh vocals by the wonderful Andreya Triana. Black Sands, I believe, represents Bonobo's best effort so far. He's used all his previous experience and added a fresh approach to that as well.

Week 11: “Black Sands” by Bonobo
Bonobo is gradually becoming a kind of electronic Steely Dan, building up their chops and honing their influences to see just how far they can push that yacht-rocking breaking point of awesomeness. Think of Simon Green as the anti-Flying-Lotus, allowing live jazz and hip-hop grooves to spin out instead of splinter and warp as they pass into another dimension. While this approach might not have the sort of futuristic cachet that such music often seems to require in order to find a wider audience, the consistent warmth and engagement of Black Sands is a stunning reminder that unconcerned, masterful subtlety, that defiantly uncool sax solos, carefully orchestrated instrumentation, and patient, indelible, undramatic slow burns can be as stunning as genre-bending ambition. When not playing the lead role, these pieces hover in the wings, both motif and atmosphere. And unlike, say, within a Tortoise album, such reluctance to come to the forefront of the mix heightens the mystery of the slow-but-solid breakbeats and synth melodies, as opposed to encouraging it all to congeal into a drowsy mess.

Whether it was the constant passing of joints, or the generally entertaining conversation of that night, it was the eponymous final track 'Black Sands' that first piqued my attention. It was this effortless marriage of the seemingly organic and the electronic which made 'Black Sands' such an exciting prospect 10 years ago, and indeed what makes it such even now. As organic as it is contrived, it feels like a microcosm of the record itself, while allowing the excitement Green felt when producing the album to manifest itself within its skittering percussion, fractured vocal track or the constantly shifting textures.
