I didn't know anything at all about mahjong before this series, but I read a few wikipedia articles and that was enough to understand what was going on. The main knowledge you need is the tile names, but understanding some of the terms was useful as well like 'concealed' triplets, etc. Those people who read the second Kaiji series will be familiar with the two-stage arc oblivion, then battle the mangaka likes to pursue with each type of game. I felt that the first stage in this manga lasted too long - rather than appreciating each hand of mahjong, I was impatient for the axe to fall and for the real action to start.
Still entertaining though. Was this comment useful? Yes No. What the guy below me said but minus the part about Kaiji being the 2nd best. Fukumoto's nobuyuki's work is much more highly celebrated and acclaimed than Liar Game which is currently on hiatus. After several animes, movies and years of publication, and essentially becoming the defacto gambling manga, it's hard to fault this 1 series. Kaiji - Mahjong Arc. It's a masterpiece. The only problem with it is the pacing, and that the author always prolongs the chapters the pachinko arc especially. This arc was especially entertaining though. Last updated on December 28th, , pm. Holy smokes this is a good series and this arc is no letdown. Tons of man-tears in this saga and lots of mind twists. Can't wait for this arc to be adapted to anime.

It has been serialized in Kodansha 's seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Magazine since February The Kaiji manga currently consists of six series; the current series, Tobaku Datenroku Kaiji: 24 Oku Dasshutsu-hen , started in The first two manga series were adapted into two anime television series of twenty-six episodes each, produced by Madhouse and broadcast on Nippon TV ; Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor , aired from October to April , and Kaiji: Against All Rules , aired from April to September Kaiji was also adapted into a live-action film trilogy, directed by Toya Sato and starring Tatsuya Fujiwara as the titular protagonist.
