Light, on the other hand, receives the power to kill. A gift of death, if you will. Light is not guilty of anything here in the timeline prior to getting a death note. The chain, in my view, is not a metaphor for guilt or criminality, but is a symbolic representation of Light being shackled by something innate to himself. His own humanity in other words.

Thoughts on the First OP of the Death Note Anime
It may not be an exact interpretation of the classic anime and manga series of the same name, but manages to establish its own personality and reason to exist. A young adult movie that plays to the strengths of the genre, this version of Death Note serves largely as an introduction for anime newcomers to experience why the series became a global phenomenon in the first place. The following is a list of qualities that the film has that make it stand alone as a great rendition to the superb Japanese franchise. For the sake of not going into too much detail, the game that L initiates with the high school student is a constant back-and-forth of cat and mouse, with L getting more and more frustrated as time goes by.

We humans and perhaps all living creatures live closest to ourselves—the most tangible entity we can possibly fathom. He is an all-around perfect student—athletic, smart, handsome, and outwardly kind. He is an actor and a liar with a superiority complex, and prior to when the plot picks up in the anime, his attitude towards life is that of a person playing a meaningless game that he knows all the cheat codes to. Life is boring, and more than that, it is a rotten place full of despicable people. But then, he finds a Death Note, a notebook that shinigami, also known as death gods or grim reapers, use to kill people. The notebook kills a person through heart attack if no cause of death is specified. Rather than completely shun the notebook or open it up and try it out immediately out of curiosity and doubt, he behaves with caution and intelligence from the beginning.
This includes the concept of ordinary humans having winged allies who grant them supernatural powers. In some regards, the angels of Platinum End , such as Nasse, Revel and Baret, can be compared directly to Death Note 's Shinigami -- but in many ways, the angels are more compelling and exciting as characters, despite not quite sharing the Shinigamis' philosophical depth about death and ethics. In broad strokes, Platinum End 's angels such as Nasse and Revel can be compared to Shinigami like Ryuk and Rem , in that they are winged supernatural beings who follow humans around and lend them superhuman gifts. These beings rarely fight the villains or make history alone -- instead, they enable and guide their human champions, sometimes commenting on what is happening.
