While spending the summer at his aunt's house, the young but sickly Shou makes an amazing discovery: after following the house cat into the bushes, he gets a glimpse of a miniature girl about the size of his finger! Calling her kind "Borrowers," as they survive on tiny bits of human possessions, the girl introduces herself as Arrietty. As he discovers that she lives in the house basement with her parents, Pod and Homily, Shou becomes imaginably excited at the idea of such unique neighbors.

However, he fails to understand the adversities they face on a daily basis. In addition to keeping their existence hidden, they must also embark on perilous adventures into human territory, from the house to the outdoors, in order to make a living. Despite her parents' warnings, Arrietty befriends Shou, stirring up unexpected events that may change their lives forever. Delighting the eye and conquering the heart, the breath-taking story of a friendship transcending the tensions between two different human kinds begins.

I thought this film had stunning visual effects. The backgrounds look like watercolor paintings and the scenes of the garden and the assortment of wildflowers in the yard were beautiful. In an industry where animation has begun to all look and feel the same—thanks partly to the standard set by Pixar— The Secret World of Arrietty arrives as a breath of fresh air. Nonetheless, Arrietty forms a friendship with Shawn, who gains her trust after revealing to her that he is terminally ill. This is especially true of the bond formed between Arrietty and Shawn. Arrietty, in all her optimism, inspires Shawn to push forward and seek life, while Shawn helps her understand and see the world in a new light. He teaches her responsibility and perspective. He teaches her to grow up. As much as the implications of their friendship resonate, The Secret World of Arrietty , like its title suggests, ultimately concerns itself with the importance of the small things in life and how the imagination influences how we view and experience them. The film urges the viewer to look at the world with new eyes, searching for beauty and worth in the places that are normally overlooked as commonplace. Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi and his team of animators bring this lesson home through the simplicity of still, stable shots and graceful, hand-drawn animation that highlight the sanctity and splendor of the ordinary. The minimal, underplayed visuals evoke the work of the great Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu and, along with a majestic score by Cecile Corbel, create an overwhelming sense of realness—of humanness—in the midst of a surreal story.

When conflict does arise, it comes from people with moderately clashing agendas. Even when making movies for small children, Studio Ghibli produces stories that are more emotionally sophisticated, and less philosophically polarized, than most adult fare. Crushed, Arrietty attempts to set things right, with increasingly problematic results. Much like a slightly older-skewed version of My Neighbor Totoro , The Secret World Of Arrietty proceeds through most of its story with little sense of urgency, even when its excitable protagonist is dashing around her giant-sized world at top speed. Arrietty is a typical Miyazaki heroine, equal parts innocent cheer, bluster, and submerged melancholy.
