Instead of the usual practice of animated series tie-in movies telling an original story designed to be unobtrusive to the main plot, Mugen Train picks up the story of Demon Slayer directly after the end of the first season, moving its violent, emotional spectacle to the big screen. As for the story, Demon Slayer is about, in short, a young man who slays man-eating demons. Set in early s Japan, Tanjiro Kamado joins the mysterious Demon Slayer Corps after his family is slaughtered and his sister Nezuko is turned into a demon herself. Mugen Train fits a small arc of the manga into its two-hour running time: Tanjiro and his comrades Inosuke a wild boy who wears a boar head and Zenitsu a coward , along with Nezuko, embark on a mission to slay the demon Enmu, gifted with an extra dose of powerful blood from the ultimate big bad Muzan Kibutsuji at the very end of Season 1, hiding on the eponymous coal-powered locomotive. An arc of the manga adapted as a feature film instead of a series of episodes, the appeal of Mugen Train is more or less the same as the series with little in the way of added complications or twists on the tried-and-true formula in the lead-up to Season 2 release later this year.

To say that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has been highly anticipated is the very definition of an understatement. The film is set to hit theaters today, but I was fortunate enough to check it out early and, wow, this is a really good movie and a firm reminder of why Demon Slayer is such a beloved series. However, since this is a supernatural anime series with terrifyingly cool demon designs and jaw-dropping sword fights, Tanjiro goes home to discover that his entire family has been slaughtered by demons. Taking place right where the first season left off, Tanjiro and his fellow Demon Slayer Corps gang of misfits board a, well, train , but word is many including other Demon Slayers have been killed on the train. Anime movies tend to be their own thing that exists outside of the main plot such as the two My Hero Academia movies. The movie is the Mugen Train manga arc, so we pretty much dive right into the story, our characters immediately on the train and connecting with Rengoku. All the characters are in top form, with visually stunning battle animation coupled with those sweeping musical scores that get you pumped every time a character grabs their sword.

Ever since the death of his father, the burden of supporting the family has fallen upon Tanjirou Kamado's shoulders. Though living impoverished on a remote mountain, the Kamado family are able to enjoy a relatively peaceful and happy life. One day, Tanjirou decides to go down to the local village to make a little money selling charcoal. On his way back, night falls, forcing Tanjirou to take shelter in the house of a strange man, who warns him of the existence of flesh-eating demons that lurk in the woods at night. When he finally arrives back home the next day, he is met with a horrifying sight—his whole family has been slaughtered. Worse still, the sole survivor is his sister Nezuko, who has been turned into a bloodthirsty demon. Consumed by rage and hatred, Tanjirou swears to avenge his family and stay by his only remaining sibling. Alongside the mysterious group calling themselves the Demon Slayer Corps, Tanjirou will do whatever it takes to slay the demons and protect the remnants of his beloved sister's humanity.

The below contains spoilers for the premiere of Demon Slayer Season 2: Entertainment District Arc, which is now streaming on Funimation and Crunchyroll. Two years after the release of the first season, and eight months after the Mugen Train movie, Demon Slayer is finally back with a new episode that brings back memorable characters, stunning animation, and a metric ton of emotion. Those expecting to jump right into the next adventure may be a bit disappointed that the premiere lacks some momentum, as despite being twice the length of a regular episode, most of it serves as an epilogue to Mugen Train, resolving the emotional loose ties of that movie before introducing a new mentor for Tanjiro and the gang. Indeed, the first five minutes of the episode are a recap of the fight between Rengoku and Akaza in Mugen Train, resulting in the devastating loss of the fire hashira.
