‘A Dog’s Way Home’ Will Totally Remind You Of This Beloved ’90s Movie
By Pete Hammond. When it comes to dog stories, author W. Bruce Cameron is prolific in writing them and then getting them made into movies. Of the trio the latest is the greatest, especially for dog lovers who want to believe our mutt is looking out for us like a guardian angel.
Along the way there are plenty of funny adventures with the various incarnations of Bailey, all determined to make sure CJ lives a good and happy life despite her propensity for hooking up with the wrong kind of boyfriend — particularly in a subplot involving a creepy guy named Shane Jack Manley that goes very bad.
I could have done without that part, but it is obviously thrown in to add drama. There is also her good childhood friend Trent Ian Chen and Henry Lau at different ages ; clearly he is the guy the dog needs to keep in the picture, and does so especially when a cancer diagnosis becomes part of the plot. And speaking of tissue, you made need a few. As for the actors, it is nice to see Quaid back, even with heavy aging makeup.
Marg Helgenberger, with little to do, replaces the late Peggy Lipton. Prescott and Lau are particularly impressive, and Gilpin brings a certain complexity to Gloria that makes a largely unsympathetic character feel very real.
I am a sucker for a boy-and-his-dog movies of every stripe, but this one flips the usual gender and makes a girl and her dog just as effective. I have to say it really hit the spot for me. Anyone who ever loved a dog and had to say goodbye will likely agree this movie is therapeutic. Check out my video review that includes scenes from the film in the video above. The intriguing, albeit not original, answer is revealed near the conclusion. As for the second, the Golden Retriever named Bailey is so good, so really good, that he returns to earth after his demise as…you guessed it. A dog! The tale of reincarnation focuses on four principal dogs; Bailey, Buddy, Tino and Ellie. After each one dies the demise occurs offstage , the new incarnations are fully aware of their previous lives despite being of different breeds.

LOVE never dies, nor does the four-legged hero of Lasse Hallstrom's emotionally manipulative family drama. Based on the novel by W Bruce Cameron, A Dog's Purpose bounds through decades of American history, tightly leashed to a sentimental mutt voiced by Josh Gad , who is reincarnated as different breeds, but never forgets the smell of his first owner. The point to Hallstrom's picture is to traumatise dog-loving audiences and the Oscar-nominated Swedish film-maker encourages a deluge of saltwater tears with repetitive scenes of man's best friend saying farewell to distraught owners. Gad's soothing omnipresent voiceover, which is less excitable than his scene-stealing turn as singing snowman Olaf in Frozen, underscores the sobs with gentle humour. The imbalance in running time devoted to different sets of humans keeps most of the characters at arm's length and there is a gnawing predictability to the film's dewy-eyed final destination. Golden retriever Bailey voiced by Gad has a brief first life in the s — he is captured by men from the local dog pound and put to sleep. In his second incarnation in , he is rescued from a dangerously hot truck by eight-year old Ethan Montgomery Bryce Gheisar and his mother Elizabeth Juliet Rylance. They persuade Elizabeth's hard-drinking husband Jim Luke Kirby to keep Bailey and Ethan enthusiastically trains the dog, mastering an acrobatic trick with an American football.

In the s, a feral puppy named Toby is whisked away to the dog pound and quickly euthanized, wondering if "fun" truly is life's purpose. His strong spirit is reborn and reincarnated as a newborn Retriever puppy in Toby leaves his cage at a puppy mill and is found by two garbage men who plan to sell him for their own profit. They leave to drink and Toby is spotted locked inside their pick-up truck by a young boy named Ethan and his mother, who rescue him from the brink of death by heatstroke.

We don't deserve dogs. Lovable, loyal companions that want nothing more than to be by our side and eat our food , dogs are too good for this cruel, stupid world. While we don't deserve dogs, dogs definitely don't deserve movies like A Dog's Journey , the weepy, manipulative, upsetting sequel to the surprise hit A Dog's Purpose. Once again, audiences will be forced to watch dog after dog roll over and play dead, all in the name of telling some sort of half-assed spiritual story about reincarnation. Are the pups on screen cute? They sure are. Is that enough to make this movie worth seeing?
