Claymore Manga Review

Claymore seemed to be a promising series due to its strong premise; however, like Cage of Eden, it starts off with a gripping plot and ends with many shortcomings. Before we begin, I believe some spoiler-free context for the plot is necessary.

The setting of Claymore is fascinating. Yoma are monsters that feed on human flesh and — this is where it gets interesting — have the ability to shapeshift into human form. So what Yoma typically do is stalk villagers and take on the form of their meals, leaving villagers suspiscious of one another. To combat Yoma, researchers experimented with implanting Yoma flesh into humans to create soldiers who can match their strength.

Being part-Yoma, the soldiers — termed Claymore — are able to sniff out Yoma and exterminate them, but of course for a hefty price. The plot is really the selling point of the series.

There are many questions that the reader would ask early in the series such as: Where did Yoma come from? These questions keep the reader engaged despite several ups and downs between volumes. Eventually, these questions were answered midway through the manga. We finally learn that the organisation and the existence of Yoma are a military experiment. The manga gives no closure on how they would handle their previous colonisers after their successful coup. There is also no mention of how the part-Yoma Claymore would continue coexisting with the humans.

Will they continue using the black card system where Claymore would commit assisted suicide before they fully turn into bloodthirsty Yoma? These questions remained unanswered and worst of all, were not even mentioned towards the end. It is unfortunate that such a promising world was not given a chance to fully bloom in the narrative.

Rather, it felt like a plot device that was used as an excuse to cull the organisation because of the lack of acknowledgement. Frankly, Clare is a fairly mediocre protagonist. She makes fun and interesting relationships with the other characters in the manga but suffers the curse of being less interesting than her companions. In general, Clare mostly reacts to events and we barely see any inner monologue or hear about her thoughts.

The problem with this narrative structure is that Clare and her companions barely get a lot of time on their own. These are the kinds of interactions that are absent from Claymore.

Instead, the relationships between Clare and others in Claymore rely too much on exposition. Clare also falls short in terms of interiority. In contrast, Berserk handles this fantastically. Art — Dissappointing, but gets noticeably better. In one word, the art is disappointing.

In short, the designs of the weaker Yoma tend to look really flat. When I mentioned that the art improves later, it really does. Take this stellar panel of Clare for example. One aspect that also remains quite lacklustre is the sword fights in the majority of the earlier chapters. Now compare this with Bleach where characters also wield large heavy swords.

In contrast, you can feel the weight of the attacks as the press against the characters. The sword fights are also a lot more fluid and sharp. TLDR, Claymore is a manga with lots of potential. Overall, I had fun binging through the series. View all posts by David Tay. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Twitter account. The recent passing of Kentaro Miura is a hard blow to all those who love epic and dark storytelling. His manga epic Berserk pushed the boundaries of dark storytelling. For years fans have followed the journey of "The Struggler" Guts and his epic quest for revenge against Griffith. This journey went to some very dark places, with some storylines being incredibly brutal and heartbreaking. Yet the story was never depressing, Guts himself eventually found a way to smile even after all he had been through.

Berserk fans are excited about the manga's return. Not only is it one of the greatest manga of all time , but the last chapter penned by Miura ended on a massive cliffhanger. Hearing that the manga will continue over a year later has given fans some much-needed hope. However, it's because Berserk is such a good manga that fans need to keep their expectations in check.
