Fate/stay night (And the rest of the goddamn franchise)

The unique setting, combined with the appeal of crossing over heroes from history and mythology, propelled its popularity. This eventually led to multiple anime series, video games, and novels. Each route has a different heroine, as well as a different Servant around which the plot unravels.

While all three routes provide intriguing and compelling stories, there is always discourse over which route is the best. Here's a look into each of them. Fate focuses on exploring the general premise of the visual novel : Seven magi come to the city of Fuyuki in order to compete in the Holy Grail War. To do so, they summon Heroic Spirits, souls of legendary figures from history and mythology, to serve as their Servants in battle.

When every other Servant is defeated, the remaining Master and Servant will achieve the Holy Grail and receive a wish. Saber is the main heroine of this route as well as the Servant protagonist, alongside Shiro Emiya. Shiro Emiya, a normal high school student with a rudimentary knowledge in magic, accidentally summons Saber, unintentionally entering himself into the Holy Grail War.

As the two of them struggle against the other Masters and fight to survive the Holy Grail War, the two of them become closer and learn about each other's motivations and backstories. Though this route mainly focuses on Shiro and Saber, Rin Tohsaka and Ilyasviel von Einzbern also figure as major characters. Fate is an important introduction to the visual novel. It explains the core setting and background of the story, and it fleshes out Shiro and Saber, two of the most important characters who play a role in each route.

However, many of the other characters are not as developed in comparison, and some characters, like Archer and Caster, do not see much of the spotlight. The route also lacks a lot of key information revealed in the other routes, making it seem a bit shallow when it comes to the story's lore.

Nevertheless, Fate remains a serviceable story that is as enjoyable as the other routes. It also has the happiest ending in comparison to the other routes available to play. Heaven's Feel is the third playable route in the series, and it can only be played after beating the all other routes. Compared to the other two routes, Heaven's Feel is a much darker story that draws on elements from horror and suspense genres. Sakura Mato serves as the heroine of this route, and as one of the only surviving Servants, Rider acts as the Servant protagonist.

The story generally revolves around Sakura, a supporting character that had not played a role in the other routes, as well as her family. Her abusive brother Shinji Mato plays a large role, as well as her grandfather Zoken Mato, who only appears in this route. When the Holy Grail War is derailed by a mysterious shadow that is powerful enough to defeat several Servants, the remaining participants find themselves forced to work together in order to stop it.

Many of the Servants are defeated very early on, which means that the story mostly revolves around the remaining human characters, including Shiro, Rin, Sakura, Ilya, and Kirei. Through its plot, Heaven's Feel explores a lot of the background, hidden details not covered in the first two routes. The origin of the Holy Grail War and the true nature of the Holy Grail are uncovered in this route, making it a great source of lore for fans. Still, Heaven's Feel is a great story that makes good use of tense situations to fill its readers with suspense.

Unlimited Blade Works is the second playable route in the game. It is an alternative retelling of the first route Fate, derived from a choice that Shirou must make near the beginning of the visual novel. This small change radically alters the events of the Holy Grail War, so the two stories still feel quite different even if they generally cover similar plotlines. Rin Tohsaka acts as the heroine of this route, and her Servant Archer acts as the Servant protagonist. In general, Unlimited Blade Works as a route is more focused on character development, with underutilized Servants like Caster, Assassin, and Lancer all getting to take center stage.

In fact, the Servants that the series is so known for generally take this spotlight in this route. However, the main focus of the story is between Shiro and Archer, with their clashing ideals forming the main theme for the route. The two of them have a relationship that is antagonistic, yet in a way it is also like that of a master and student, as Shiro finds himself unintentionally learning from the skilled Servant.

In a way, Unlimited Blade Works reveals more about Shiro than Fate does, and could be considered his personal route. Unlimited Blade Works is the most combat-heavy of the three routes , with many intense battles happening throughout the story. It features Shiro at his absolute strongest, as he masters his magic in a way that he never achieves in the other routes. By the end of the story, he is able to use his powers to their fullest, even managing to use the power that gives this route its name: Unlimited Blade Works.

It's constructed with three different storylines, or routes, that must be played through in order. They're separate storylines, and yet they build upon each other as if they were part of the same narrative. They'll even make references to story beats and elements from the other two. The plot device of parallel universes isn't brought in until the third and final route, Heaven's Feel , but once that falls into place, the idea that these are all canon timelines existing simultaneously makes more sense, oddly enough. With that being the case, which route's adaptation did the best that it possibly could have in adapting it?

I already love the series, as I thought I would. Fate is a notoriously tricky series to get into. Please, they just complicate things more. Basically, the simplest thing to understand is the original Fate visual novel. The VN has three routes and four adaptations covering those routes comprised of two TV series and four movies made by two studios. The VN routes have an order. Later, they did a movie for Blade Works. Are we on the same page? I hope I explained that well and I hope that makes the Fate series seem less intimidating. I wish somebody told me this years ago.

So what’s the best way to get into the Fate series if I can’t play the VN?

Fate is a popular series that has been going on since in the anime world. The series is notoriously hard for new fans to get into due to its 20 plus anime series. Both Night and Unlimited Blade Works have very similar stories and often get confused by fans as Unlimited being a reboot of Night. This couldn't be further from the truth as Unlimited is a totally different story and a key to unlocking the whole story of the visual novel the anime series are based on.

It only takes a minute to sign up. Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. This is in two parts: a monologue of the Fate Route and a second part where Arturia is hearing from Merlin about a miracle achievable by two people, one who "wait endlessly" and one who "pursue endlessly", and eventually the pursuer will stop when they reach the waiter. What Merlin is referring to is Arturia waiting and Shirou pursuing. Eventually Shirou reaches Avalon where Arturia is sleeping and the two finally reunite. It's not entirely certain how long it took Shirou to reach Avalon however, considering that Avalon transcends all magic including the 5 Magics it must have taken an eternity for Shirou to reach.

Fate/stay night 15th Celebration Project begins

First announced in , Heaven's Feel was originally going to be released as a single film, but was split into a trilogy so as to include all - or at least most - of the vast amount of story contained in that story arc of the visual novel, which is by far the longest one in the game. The story starts off more or less the same as the previous two routes: at the end of the Fourth Holy Grail War , Kiritsugu Emiya rescues and adopts a young boy named Shirou, but passes away a few years later, leaving young Shirou trying to leave up to his adopted father's ideal of becoming a "Hero of Justice" who can save all people, despite having learned only some basic magecraft to do so. Ten years later, the Fifth Holy Grail War starts, and Shirou, now in his late teens, gets dragged into the conflict by accident, including inadvertently summoning his own servant: Saber, the same servant who served his own father in the previous war. He also forms an alliance with fellow classmate and secret mage Rin Tohsaka, who also participates in the war, and her mysterious servant, Archer. From there on, the story completely deviates from what was seen in the previous two routes.

This is not necessarily a review of specifically the third film, but a review of the experience of being a fan who waited a long time for the film series. As of this writing, it has never been released in English, but a fan translation was completed in the late s. A visual novel is a form of media where the story is primarily told through text not unlike a novel, but with sound effects, music, visual art, and occasional interactivity. It refers to selecting possible options from a list for the protagonist to take at specific junctions in the story. If the correct option is selected, the story continues.

The choices you make affect how the rest of the story plays out and what ending you will receive. In fact, of them all this is the one I've enjoyed playing the most. You have to prove that Atmey was the one who went to the victim's office and killed him, but by this point in the trial the judge is getting tired. A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
